Bulletin: January 2011

by Bobby Pokorny

December was a good month. We had 27 members and 4 guests who brought in 15 models, mostly for the theme contest. A fine ending for a great year!

December Meeting
CHRISTMAS DINNER: When the previous Bulletin was printed the Dinner had NOT yet been held. I can now report that it was a resounding success with nearly as many members as a regular meeting! Couple that with good food and cold beer and it was a good time. Outstanding!

THINGS THAT STING THEME: We finally had it! We had about a dozen entries by nearly as many members. A nice showing! Here are the results:

1st Guy Ferrara – F-18 Hornet
2nd Kevin App – Green Hornet
3rd Joe Bergman – Wespe
HM Ray Whitton – CF-105 Arrow
Bob Epley – Green Hornet
Hugh Alcock – Hornet F3
Frank Tripoli – Mosquito

As always, thanks to the sponsors, without whom the theme contests wouldn’t exist. And thanks to all the members who built for the theme contest, who really make these theme contests worthwhile for members to sponsor! Well done!

OLD REGIME: After two years of service to the club, Ray Keegan presided over his last meeting in december. A special thanks goes out to him and his vice-president Israel Alvarado for their time, energy, and leadership during their years of service.

You can see pics from each meeting either at the Club Website or on the Photo-Blog: http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/

On the agenda: January
NEW REGIME: We have a couple new officers who will be sitting up front starting this month. The new Prez will be Don Illjes, with Charlie Nelson in the Veep seat. We look forward to a couple of fun years with these guys running things!

KIT SALE NIGHT: Bring kits to sell, bring money to spend! There’s no tab at this bar!

THE TWILIGHT ZONE THEME: We had three sponsors come forward for the June theme contest. More details HERE.

2011 MODEL PLEDGE: It seems that we kept the concept entirely too loose for members tastes so we’re tightening them up a little. Please bring in an unbuilt model between January and March to declare as your pledge model. Please have it finished for the OCTOBER MEETING for a display. In between there will be one WIP night, which would be nice to show us your progress (April). After October you may bring back your pledge to the November meeting for the last contest of the year. For your efforts you get an additional FIVE Super Raffle tickets for completing your pledge! Sweet! Easy enough? Now go have fun with it!

Next meeting:
January 21, 2011
Same time!
Same place!

Note for web site/newsletter on Troop Support project

Troop Support Update – January 2011

Frank Colucci volunteered at the December meeting to be my backup for collecting donations at each meeting. My string of absences in the second half of 2010 understandably led to some confusion as to whether the club was still actively pursuing a Support the Troops program. Frank and I will ensure that a box for donations is clearly marked at each meeting. There is a new contact as of December 2010 at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Speicher in Iraq. As mentioned at the December meeting, a lack of current contacts in Iraq had interrupted what had been our continuous support beginning in 2006, so a current contact is a welcome development.

A reminder – we can't ship any flammable materials, so no model airplane cement or paints with a flammable base such as enamels, lacquers, and some acrylics (Tamiya, for example). Frequently requested materials are paint brushes and automotive kits.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Hugh Alcock
