November was a jam-packed meeting full of stuff to do. We had 23 members and 1 guest who brought in a dozen models most of which were contest entries.

November Meeting

COntest night – 4^th qtr 2013: This was the final installment of the quarterly BPMS Annual Contest. Another year in the books.   

super raffle: This is the reason why you must fill out your paperwork at each meeting. For every new model you brought in over the course of the year you get ONE SUPER RAFFLE TICKET. We had 246 raffle tickets out there that night. Phil Benson was top guy with 23 for the year, followed closely by Joe Bergman. We had nearly 100 raffle items so the chance of winning something was pretty high.  

Holiday Dinner: At the time that this is being written, the dinner had not yet occurred, but if history is any indicator, it was probably a good time! This year we met at NORA’S PARK BENCH CAFÉ in Brooklyn on December 14^th -- TOMORROW!

TROOP SUPPORT: With Hugh in retirement Jimmy Tissot volunteered to take over the role as Wounded Warrior Project liaison. He’s gotten reports regarding what models and supplies would be most useful. He was recently advised of a hub to ship to closer to home, so that’s good. As always, donations of any models and supplies are welcome.

PHOTO ROSTER: Hugh can provide the files and write up the process I use in PowerPoint and PhotoManager to put the pages together. Can anyone take this job over? Hello? Anyone? Contact Bobby or Jeff at the meeting.

AWARDS: At the time this is being written I already crunched the contest numbers. The challenge will be having the awards printed in time. If all goes well, we’ll see who YOU voted for in 2013 and who the TOP GUN will be!

BPMS Bulletin: November 2013

THE  MINUTES

October was a meeting under a hunter’s moon. We had 27 members and 1 guest who brought in 10 models most of which were pledges.

October Meeting

2013 Model Pledge: Not a bad showing. About a half dozen members brought in their completed model pledges and told us about the builds. I think some of the more notable works were Charlie’s paper model ship, HMS Badsworth, Phil’s ’34 Duezie, Russ’ use of magnets with his Cutlass and Kamila’s Statue of Liberty that lit up!

NOMINATIONS: Ray and Gordon have only had their posts for a year. They were elected to another year, per BPMS tradition.  

HOLIDAY DINNER: After the way I dropped the ball in September several members stepped up with various options where we could go. Thanks to you all for your effort. We had to quickly boil it down to two choices and went with:

That will be separate from the December Meeting (12/20) which will include desserts, the SLOPPY SECONDS THEME CONTEST, and the awards ceremony for the annual contest, provided I have the numbers crunched in time.

Trophy package: We sponsored a trophy package for the HVHMG 2013 Show, The Cold War, which was on October 19.

super raffle: This is the reason why you must fill out your paperwork at each meeting. For every new model you brought in over the course of the year you get ONE SUPER RAFFLE TICKET. If you completed your pledge model you get an additional FIVE super raffle tickets. You cannot buy tickets for this raffle. You must earn them! The more you built, the more tixx you get. We’ve been buying items for the Super Raffle all year, but if you would like to donate anything, feel free to do so! Who built the most in 2013? I’ll announce the name at the meeting.

Sloppy Seconds Theme Contest: December 20, 2013

Who amongst us hasn’t been totally enthusiastic about at least one of the BPMS Theme Contests to only fall short in the end? Jimmy Tissot and your humble narrator are bringing you a theme contest that you can finally finish that model for a theme contest: SLOPPY SECONDS! The Procrastinator’s Dream Theme!

We figure everyone must have something that went incomplete or back in the stack that was meant to be built for a theme contest. Finish up something you’ve already started. Build the model you really wanted to get done. Execute that idea that you got too late to get done. You probably already have something started in the stack, so this should be a breeze!

Have you gotten all your theme entries done or too new to the BPMS to have incomplete entries? You may have a look at the list and build something that will fall within those criteria for that contest, but please only build models that would’ve been available at that time. (eg, please don’t build the Battlestar Pegasus model for a Sloppy Second of the 1997 Sci-Fi Theme.)

Easy enough and you should already have plenty to build. We ENCOURAGE you to finish off something you started previously for a theme contest rather than buying something new. Now you have an excuse to get it done! Feel free to contact Jimmy or Bobby (or any of the officers) with any questions.

We will also have special awards, for example: for the oldest BPMS theme entry finally completed and the model that could qualify for the most theme contests!

September gave us a pretty full house. We had 28 members and no guests who brought in only 8 models to an informative meeting.

September Meeting

HUGH’s final meeting: It is with great sadness that we had to say good bye to another long-standing members. Whether you remember him best for his excellent modeling skills, assembling the photo roster, troop support, theme contest sponsor or any of the other many contributions he made to the ongoing life of the club, you’ll know we’re losing a great asset. So long, good sir! We hope to see you along the circuit! Thank you, I tip my hat to you, sir!

Holiday Dinner: I TOTALLY scrEwed this up. We didn’t discuss this AT ALL and time is ticking away! We only have TWO meetings before December and we need to consider this sooner than later. Ed Johnson was more on the ball than I; he spoke to someone at a local restaurant, so we will discuss this possibility at the meeting. The German/Slovak place we used to go to was washed away by Sandy. The Tasty Tavern we went to last year is out of business. We need more ideas! Keep your eyes open. Someplace reasonably close to the meeting place with a good supply of parking would be ideal. Thanks in advance for your effort!

Using pastels and dry brushing on your models: Hosted by Joe Bergman and your humble narrator, we demonstrated how we use pastels and dry brushing to achieve various effects on our models. A few members had thoughts and ideas to contribute as well. Thanks!

The idea would be to have a raffle in October of items donated by members and tickets would be $2 each. If donations are numerous enough, we might break it up into TWO raffles. We’ll see. Don Illjes also found out more about a Wounded Warrior outpost at Fort Hamilton. More details to come.

2013 Model Pledge: I hope you’ve been working on it, because it’s HERE!  You should’ve brought in an unbuilt model between January and APRIL 2013 (extended) to declare as your pledge model. Now it's time to have it finished for OCTOBER 2013, for a display. After October you may bring back your pledge for the November meeting for the last contest of the year. For your efforts you get an additional FIVE Super Raffle tickets for completing your pledge! Sweet! Easy enough!

Thanks and Farewell to BPMS

A few words from Hugh-

I would like to say a sincere thank you to all the members of the Brooklyn Plastic Modelers Society for making my membership in the club such a great experience. The club does a great job with its regular program of theme contests, special nights, raffles and demonstrations - there was always something of interest at each meeting. However, the outstanding feature of each BPMS meeting is the evidence on display that speaks to a diverse set of modeling interests. Aviation dominates in most IPMS chapters, but the tables at a BPMS meeting held figures, sci-fi, factual space, ships, cars, armor, and paper models. The diversity inspired me to expand my interests into avenues other than aircraft and I've enjoyed the challenges in scratchbuilding sci-fi subjects and my initial attempts at dioramas and ships. Given the wide range in modeling interests, there is an amazing camaraderie that exists across the club and that made each meeting too short, as there was always the desire to talk with someone else before the night was over. I'll miss you guys and hope to get back for the occasional meeting. If you get down to the Gulf Coast, look me up.

August means pizza night which, customarily, has members coming out of the woodworks! We had 21 members and one guest who brought in 18 models to a very fulfilling yet disjointed meeting.

August Meeting

Holiday Dinner: It may seem early but we only have a few meetings before December and we need to consider this sooner than later. The German/Slovak place was washed away by Sandy last year. The Tasty Tavern we went to is out of business. We need new ideas! Keep your eyes open. Someplace reasonably close to the meeting place with a good supply of parking would be ideal. Thanks in advance for your effort!

off kilter: Special circumstances require special handling. Due to the 59^th Street Bridge being on fire, your humble narrator had an epic four hour journey to get to the meeting. While buying time for me to get to the BBSC the meeting was run in reverse order. We had a raffle and voted for the third quarterly contest and I arrived right after the pizza did, as if on cue. We held business after eating, which was fine since a gut full of pizza always calms everyone down.

QUARTERLY CONTEST: Time flies! The third installment of the BPMS Annual Contest is in the books. The last contest night, and chance to get votes for 2013, will be in NOVEMBER.

PIZZA NIGHT: Yay BPMS! As usual we made quick work of those tasty Brooklyn style pies! I’m proud of you guys!

39 modeling categories, 11 special awards, vendor tables, raffles, modeling demo, make-and-take, refreshments on site. At the Patriot Chapter club table we’ll be selling off a collection of some 250 models with BIG DISCOUNTS GALORE!

July was another tremendous meeting. We had 26 members who brought in 14 models and a very educational clinic on groundwork.

BUILDING GROUNDWORK CLINIC: Everything looks better with a nice base. If you’ve always wondered how to make some impressive looking groundwork, I hope you took some notes when Jimmy Tissot and Joe Bergman told the group how they get it done. A very educational clinic. Thanks gentlemen.

BBQ NIGHT PART II: It was a bit hot to be out grilling again so Vinny boiled up some dogs. Perfect summertime vittles. Thanks Master Chef!

SWAP NIGHT: Kits were swapped or sold. ‘Murica!

QUARTERLY CONTEST: Time flies. We’re already up to the third installment of the BPMS Annual Contest. You have another opportunity to rack up votes. If you built something new for the TV Awards Theme Contest, you’re encouraged to bring it back for the annual contest. Also be sure to fill out all your proper paperwork. Without a contest form, your model will not be entered into the contest.

PIZZA NIGHT: Possibly the favorite club activity… Bring yourself and your appetite and make sure you’re up to date with your dues in order to partake in the annual BPMS Feast of August. We just ask that you bring no guests, thank you.
