8/30/22 BPMS Zoom mini meeting report

Twelve people attended the meeting. Gordon is keeping busy. He ordered the BPMS polo shirts and he got wireless mics to better livestream the September in-person meeting. Now all we need is content. Sensible suggestions are welcome. The 50th Anniversary luncheon will be Sunday, 10/16/22 at 1pm at Buckley's, 2926 Ave S, Brooklyn NY 11229. To date, 25 people have said they'll attend and there's room for more.

In progress and completed work included: Fw-190 G (Vaughn's work on the kit landing gear was guided by the operation of the actual landing gear), P-26 (Mr. K overcame the "Dullcote disaster" he reported a few weeks back), An-74, F-15 E, F-111, F-4 EJ, Capt. Kidd's Black Falcon and Green Hornet's Black Beauty. Acquisitions included: Postal Service Truck (Metal Earth) and 1960 'Vette Grand Sport. Gil's tool of the week was Tamiya's anti-static "model cleaning brush". It removes dust etc. without any tack cloth residue. It also gets in places tack cloths can't. We heard Dullcote can be made even flatter by pouring off 1/3 of a new bottle and replacing it with lacquer thinner. We asked about rubber infused crazy glue. Several people saw for sale but no one has tried it yet.

The discussion on pinning joints covered ways to align parts and transfer center marks, hole orientation and size, pin materials and adhesives. Thanks to Kevin. Joe, Vaughn, Frank, Steve, Bobby and others for sharing. Don't take this the wrong way but if you missed this discussion, you missed a lot

The next meeting is 9/6/22. Frank and/or others will be sending the invites for September 's Tuesday meetings. Thanks in advance for filling in.

8/23/22 BPMS Zoon Mini Meeting featured topic - Get Bent!

Featured Discussion: Share tips on bending plastic, metal, and wood.

The BPMS 50th Anniversary Dinner will be in Brooklyn, on Sunday, October 16 from 1-5pm. Details will follow in a separate email.

Last week, in addition to enjoying our annual Pizza Night, members at the August in-person meeting participated in the first live-streamed BPMS meeting. It's on the Club's Facebook page. Not bad for a first attempt, and Gordon has several improvements in mind.

Thirteen people attended the 8/23/22 meeting. New releases, 1/48 F4-U1A and 1/35 King Tiger (early). In progress and completed work included: a pair of   F-15 Strike Eagles (one by Jimmy, one by Frank), 101 Spaceborne figure, T-34, 1/700 SeaKing and Seahawk helicopters (Michael apparently likes a challenge), 1934 Ford Pickup (Mr. K was disappointed by the fit and the instructions), Arsenal VG-36, Hurricane IIC (Portuguese markings) and F-111. Acquisitions included: Olivia Newton-John (as Sandy from Grease - from Pestilence Labs - a portion of the price goes to breast cancer research), RQ-4N Global Hawk and  F-4C Phantom. We got several tips: Flitz Metal Polish also works on plastic and fiberglass, Tamiya Black Panel Liner is good for painting the rubber on tank road wheels, and another way to paint the wearing surface of a tire is to roll the tire through a puddle of paint.

The featured topic was bending and we saw several tools and methods used to bend metal (mostly): Cold Heat inductive soldering gun, ceramic tweezers, a stepped mandrel designed for modelers, an inexpensive transfer punch set used as mandrels, photo etch bending pliers (from Tamiya and others), bending tools from Mission Models and Hold and Fold, a pair of chisel blades and a glass surface, and handrail/handle jig set (from Trumpeter Master Tools). Next meeting is 8/39/22 at 7:30 pm. Invites to follow. hope to see you there.

BPMS Bulletin: AUGUST [Meeting on 8/19/22]

BPMS Bulletin

by Bobby B2 Blue Pokorny

JULY was another big meeting, despite being the, traditionally, lightest attended meeting any year. We had 29 members and 5 guests who brought in 24 models for another meeting presided over by Tom Govia, acting in a presidential capacity.

July Meeting

NEW MEMBER: We voted in our second new member, post-pandemic. Julio Guadalupe, a builder with eclectic tastes and, another, 3D printer, was voted during the July meeting! Congrats and welcome to the fold!

BEST ONLINE RESOURCES: Over the last couple years, it seems like many of our members have been mentioning various online resources for methods and inspiration to build models. Please bring in a list of your favorite sites and specific channels you like to visit to share with the group.

Photo-phone list: Gordon started taking photos of the group for the photo-phone list. If he didn’t take your photo at the last meeting, please see him at the next meeting.

BPMS SHIRTs: Gordon did some leg-work and found that we can order polo-style shirts in a variety of colors for around $30. We will be accepting money for orders in AUGUST.

SWAP NIGHT: Bring in models to swap or sell. Please also bring cash, you never know what you might find and there is no tab at this bar!

raffle: We had another raffle with a remarkable assortment of prizes. The club is always looking for donations for these activities.

On the agenda: August

EARLY START: We have had some packed meetings. Maybe we should start the business at 7:30 PM? We have Pizza showing up, too!

PIZZA NIGHT: Possibly one of the top favorite BPMS annual activities. PIZZA! Just be paid up to date on your dues and you can eat all you like. We ask members to please avoid bringing guests for this meeting.

CONTEST NIGHT – 3Q22 The year is just moving along. It’s time for the third installment of the quarterly contest. This would be a good time to rack up some more votes for your annual totals. Remember, if you built something for the theme contest that has never been to a quarterly contest before, feel free to bring it back!

BPMS 50th Anniversary: It seems perfect timing that the club could get back to meetings in time for our 50th Anniversary. We opened discussions and due to the occasion the group is interested in something more reflective of the celebration. We were kicking around ideas about steak or Italian food possibly during the months of September or October, before the holidays set in. Russ has some things to report at the next meeting.

WEEKLY ZOOM: Even though we are back to having regular meetings, the weekly ZOOM will continue! New day and time: Tuesdays at 7:30 PM. Every week EXCEPT for weeks with an in-person meeting.

MEETING DATE:

BPMS Zoom Mini Meeting: 8/9/22 featured topic straightening bent parts

Since there's an in-person meeting on Friday 8/19/22, there's no Tuesday Zoom meeting next week.

Thirteen people attended the 8/9/22 meeting. We're working to schedule the BPMS 50th Anniversary Dinner at Buckley's (2926 Avenue S, Brooklyn, 11229) on Friday 10/21/22. The Dinner would take the place of the October in-person meeting, so it won't require extra travel. We'll work out the details and start taking a headcount at the 8/19/22 meeting. Family, friends and non-model builders are welcome. Meal options and prices to follow.
Mark shared photos of the 2022 IPMS Nationals and the National WW1 Museum and Memorial in Omaha. Mark will host a virtual meeting with one of the authors of Shattered Sword in the near future. Contact Mark directly if you're interested in attending.
In industry news, Tamiya's 1/35 US Infantry Scout set and ICM's 1/48 OV-10 D are available. Takom is coming out with a series of M-48 variants. Watch for four Transformers kits from Trumpeter. Bayshore Hobby has moved to a new place, a few doors away. Jimmy was impressed by the clear aisles. Reports that Dragon USA is no longer around started a discussion about Dragon products in general.
In progress and completed work included: James Dean bust,  F-13 (on floats), HMS Ursula, Lacrosse Mobile launcher, F-15 and we heard about Mike's plan to build and compare the Tamiya, Hobby Boss and Edward Wildcat kits. Acquisitions included: Su-25 Frogfoot, Type 5 [Ho-Ri II] (Japanese paper panzer), and two books, Battle for Hungary and US Navy Colors. The tool of the week was a Woodworking Edge Chamfering Planer, which also works well with styrene. The featured topic was straightening bent parts. For resin, bring water to a boil, take it off the heat and dip the part into the water. In time, depending on the thickness of the part and the amount of curvature, the part should return to its original shape. Quickly put the piece in cold water to set the shape. Heat can also be applied with a hair dryer or a heat gun. If a heat gun sounds too risky, try holding the part over your toaster. Hot water/heat also works for styrene, but without the shape memory. Staying with styrene, glue, clamps and internal reinforcement resolve many fit problems. Thinning or scoring the part on its inner surface makes it easier to bend. Delicate parts, like antennae or pitot tubes, can be taped to a flat surface for a few days to straighten them out. As a last resort, you could contact the manufacturer and order a replacement part.  A quick tip from Don to the car builders, it's easier to install rubber tires after they've been sitting in hot water for a while.
Our next meeting is in-person, on Friday 8/19/22 at 2303 Bergen Ave, Brooklyn. NY 11234. This will be our first Pizza Night since 2019. Doors open around 6pm, meeting starts around 7:30 and pies arrive around 8. Also, Gordon will be taking orders for official BPMS polo shirts. Stay safe, hope to see you on the 19th.

August 2nd, 2022 BPMS Zoom Mini Meeting Report

Gil's 7/30/22 cookout was well organized and well attended. Twenty people from area clubs and BPMS were there to talk about the hobby, eat, see Gil's workshop, eat, see vintage cars and generally enjoy an in-person event. Many thanks to Gil and his family for their hospitality.

Seventeen people attended the Tuesday meeting. Frank shared photos of the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT. Impressive collection. Field trip, maybe? We're looking at a place in Brooklyn, Buckley's, for our 50th Anniversary Dinner. You'll get a separate email with details. In industry news, the price of Testors Dullcote and Glosscote spray cans will go up by $2.00. New releases in1/35: Stug 4, early and late versions and M4 A3 Easy Eight from Rye Field and T-90 with interior from Amusing Hobby. Revell Germany has what appears to be a new F-15 Strike eagle in 1/72. In progress and completed work included: Ventura, FW-190, P-51, James Dean bust, P-26 ("a Dullcote disaster", says Mr. K), two identical C-47s ("a coincidence" says Mr. K), Royal Navy lifeboat, Hurricane (Portuguese AF markings), Buccaneer, F-15, Huey (from Metal Works, not Metal Earth) and Black Falcon.  Acquisitions included: Vladislav the Poker (from What We Do in the Shadows), M-4 Sherman and Revell's Top Gun Maverick Set (with what appear to be new F-14 and F-18 kits). The featured tool was the #22 Xacto blade. The curved edge lets you cut away from you and follow curves easily. The discussion topic was magazines. Everyone has their favorites. Many are no longer in print but the names are here in case you want to follow up: Air Enthusiast, Air International, American Aviation Historical Society Journal, Wings and Airpower, Flight Journal, Military Miniatures in Review, Air Modeler, Finescale Modeler, IPMS Journal, Starship Modeler, Amazing Figure Modeler, SciFi Scale, Fantasy Figures International, Modelers Resource. Think of it as a good news, bad news situation. Bad news, less printed material available, good news less printed matter to store. Next meeting is 8/9/22 at 7:30 pm. Invites to follow. Hope to see you there.
