The Next Theme: SIZE MATTERS!!!

BPMS Joe Turner Memorial Theme Contest:
SIZE MATTERS!

He terrorized Tokyo! He devastated Chinese Buffets! He built lots and lots of models! Joe Turner – IPMS #90 – was a founding member of the Brooklyn Plastic Modelers Society. He cast a giant shadow over BPMS meetings for 20 years. Modelers around the world knew, and scurried before, the Big Guy!

To remember Joe, our December theme contest calls on you to build a subject that was the BIGGEST or smallest of its kind at its time for its country or historic setting. The Titanic was the biggest passenger ship of its day! The Panzerkampfwagen VIII Maus was the world’s biggest tank! The McDonnell Goblin was the smallest jet fighter ever built for the U.S. Air Force! All are available today as plastic kits!

The contest gives you lots of latitude in the BIGGEST or smallest at any time. What was the biggest American, British, or Russian tank of WWII? What was the biggest mortar/artillery piece? What was the smallest midget submarine? If Godzilla was the biggest lizard of his day and Rodan the biggest bird, what was the biggest insect? What was the biggest or smallest of those Gundam robots? Got a question about your entry? Just ask the big-hearted sponsors of this contest – Frank Colucci, Frank Tripoli, Hugh Alcock, and Bob Pokorny.

How do you measure up? All you have to do for the December meeting is build a model of the BIGGEST or the smallest of its time! Size of the subject, not the model, matters. Sponsors will pick winners based on workmanship and creativity. It’s what Joe would have wanted.

November meeting was an action packed meeting with activity and planning. 30 members and one guest brought in 19 models.

November Meeting

HOLIDAY DINNER: We concluded discussion about the dinner. We had it at a Czech / German place by the name of SWEIK Y WBEHKA. The Bulletin went to print before the big event, so the run down will be at the meeting.

CONTEST NIGHT 4Q09: We had our final regular contest night. That was the last chance to grab some votes for the annual contest. Due to vacation and work I will try to have the results for the December meeting. If not, expect everything in January.

SUPER RAFFLE: Another grand super raffle. We had many fabulous prizes and a ton of fun moving them out! Thanks to anyone who donated to the raffle. Get started early on your 2010 Super Raffle ticket count by bringing in models every month next year!

T-SHIRTS: Charlie found a place that can make us up some logo shirts and showed us a nice design. At this we’re looking at $13 a pop.

You can see pics from each meeting either at the Club Website or on Gordon’s blog:

On the agenda: December

SIZE MATTERS THEME CONTEST: It’s finally here. The Joe Turner Memorial Theme Contest is upon us! Did you build something that was in some way extremely big or small? Then bring it in! The awards we will be amazing! Our awards master Ed D. really outdid himself this time! You’ll be glad you entered!

HOLIDAY DESSERTS: After a fine year we like to end it on a high note with treats and drinks. We won’t have food, but we encourage any kinds of cakes, cookies, sweets, and other yummies to be brought in by the members for the meeting. Thanks in advance!
Our next meeting will be on December 18, 2009.

October meeting was another spacious one. It’s official! We’ll have the entire place to ourselves from now on. We had 29 members who brought in 10 models and 7 WIPs.

October Meeting
HOLIDAY DINNER: We continued discussion about the dinner. Bill said that he found a Czech / German place nearby that might be a good option. If that doesn't work out, there's Red Lobster, which worked out well last year. We will make a determination during the November meeting. The dinner will be held early December.

NOMINATIONS: Nominations? Fuhgettaboutit! Ray and Israel are stuck for another year. Congrats guys!

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT: Some guys brought in what they were working on and told us a little bit about their processes.

T-SHIRTS: Charlie found a place that can make us up some BPMS logo t-shirts and showed us a very nice prototype. At this point we’re looking at likely $13 a pop.

FINANCIAL REPORT: The Trez informed us of our financial position. We have $420 in the till with $50 from the raffles.

You can see pics from each meeting either at the Club Website or on Gordon’s blog: http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/

On the agenda: November
CONTEST NIGHT 4Q09: This will be the FINAL installment of the 2009 annual contest. Bring in some stuff to compete for last minute votes for the year!

SUPER RAFFLE: This is the reason why you’ve been building models all year! You are awarded one super raffle ticket for each new model you brought in over the year. If you have stuff (books, vids, models, etc.) that you would like to part with, feel free to donate them for the raffle. Be sure you’re up to date with your dues. No dues, no tickets!

TAKE A PART / LEAVE A PART: Gordon will bring in a big basin monthly for “Take a Part / Leave a Part.” Please feel free to toss your spares into the big bin too! Gordon will bring the club parts box back for each meeting for members to add or take away from. This is something we can all benefit from!

GENERATING MONEY: The club will continue to sell magnets and patches and run raffles and to generate some extra money. Can we count on you to help fund various activities and sponsorships?

SUPPORT THE BULLETIN: Some ideas for the newsletter from Hugh –
  • Members can write a paragraph or two on how they got interested and/or re-interested in modeling.
  • Show us your workbench: Have folks take a picture of their modeling habitat at home and describe what they like and/or don’t like about the setup.
OTHER THEMES
Would you like to join in and sponsor this theme? Some other concepts we’ve kicked around are: Healthcare, Take One for the Team, New York, Alternate Realities, Things That Sweep / Swing, Go Big, Go Small, Extreme Modeling, and Things That Sting. There’s an anniversary for the Air Force and thirty years for Battlestar Galactica. There’s also an anniversary for Tet Offensive. Also, long time member Dave Cockrum passed away in late 2006. Years ago he was a part sponsor of a Humor In Modeling Theme Contest. We recently lost Art Gerber who was the IPMS Head Judge for Armor. Armor Theme, perhaps? Some new ides that came across my desk: Procrastination – contest for models that weren’t completed in time for a theme contest. It’s time I got some recognition for what I do best! Two divisions – ‘finally finished’ and ‘still not finished, but I thought I’d enter it anyway’. Another… Battle of Britain Theme idea. If we call it “1940 - Conquest and Defiance”, we can set up obvious types of entries for armor, figures, ships, and a/c dealing with war and war preparations in 1940, or other historical defiance events (like the Alamo or Wake Island or saying I’d rather watch the Eagles game than go shopping with the wife (it doesn’t have to be successful defiance)) or Conquest (pretty much anything Rome set its mind to). We could also extend the conquest and defiance into Sci-Fi by adding subjects dealing with conquest (the Empire, for example) and defiance (the ragtag group led by Luke Skywalker, for example). So, this might be an idea for the DEC theme contest rather than just a meeting theme. Contact the officers if you want to help sponsor any of these contests.

Our next meeting will be on November 20, 2009.

October meeting was another spacious one. Looks like we’ll have the entire place to ourselves from now on. w00t! We had 24 members and 1 guest in attendance who brought in only 9 models.

September Meeting

Holiday Dinner: We briefly discussed what the club might do for our annual Holiday Dinner. At this point it looks like we’ll be doing the same thing as last year, Red Lobster in Brooklyn. If you have any other ideas please bring them up at the October meeting.

A Home Away From Home: Vinny mentioned that another facility located in Canarsie might be interested in our assistance. This would be a great opportunity for the BPMS since it will leave us a back-up plan if we can’t meet at the BBSC. More details will be forthcoming.

String Theme Night: This didn’t go so well. There was only one model with strings on it. Oh well, better luck next time.

Swap Night: Members brought in stuff to sell and other members got to bring home some good deals.

New Members: We voted in two new members:

Vladimir B.

Charles O.

Welcome to the fold, gents!

Work In Progress Night: Who doesn’t have kits on the workbench? Bring in some models you’re working on to show the group. We will probably ask you to say a couple words on your work also.

Nominations: Nominations? Fuhgettaboutit! These guys are only in their first year! We’re not letting them off so easily. They have another year coming to them!

Take A Part / Leave A Part: Gordon will bring in a big basin monthly for “Take a Part / Leave a Part.” Please feel free to toss your spares into the big bin too! BPMS Supports the Troops - Report to Date: 03/06 - 09/09

Our ‘Support the Troops’ campaign passed a significant milestone at the end of July this year when we shipped our 500th model to the Baghdad Hobby Club. That’s a lot of plastic, not to mention the over 1,200 modeling tools, bottles of paint, decals, magazines, and other miscellaneous items. The modelers at Forward Operating Base Speicher received our initial support as we responded to their request for donations in early 2006, but over the past four years, we have expanded our support to include: the central kit distribution point in Baghdad; modelers in the middle of the Indian Ocean at the U.S. base in Diego Garcia; and small units deployed in locations remote from the larger bases who now missed the support of the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation associations and turned to us.

As club members, we’ve donated in different ways. We’ve shown up at meetings with multiple boxes of kits and we’ve given steadily, kit-by-kit, over the past four years. Kits and tools won in a raffle have found their way into the donation bin by the end of the meeting. There’s evidence that the troops were in mind on that last trip to the dollar store when those small, but essential tools and supplies show up in multiples. There have been nights when the donations from members have only been limited by the carrying capacity of my car. A club that has few car modelers donated an air compressor, airbrush, and over 30 car models in seven months to support a special request from soldiers suddenly relocated from Baghdad to Basra. And no one has donated with the goal of being recognized for it, but simply because they wanted to show their support in a tangible way to the troops who have sacrificed so much since 9-11.

And the troops are grateful. We have received thank you messages from the following; doubtless many others also enjoyed the kits and supplies we donated as a way to break up the monotony or ease the stress of a deployment

  • SSGT Steve Demott
  • Commander Kevin Kincaid, USNR
  • Major Andrew M. Taylor, 3-2 SBCT Engineer
  • LTC George Salerno, coordinator for IPMS support, country-wide
  • MAJ Duke Samouce, founder of the Speicher club
  • MSGT Erick Gonzalez
  • SFC Paul Edwards, 793rd Military Police BN
  • COL Ted Martin, Commander, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division
  • Thomas Turner, Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division
  • Diego Garcia Modeling Club
  • MSG Brian Allen
  • SMSGT Jerry M. Sadler, Jr.

In closing this summary, I’d like to extend my thanks to the entire club for their support. Without your generous donations, this four-year run would not have been possible. Obviously, we’d like to see all the troops heading home, but until they do, we’ll continue to support them as only modelers can.

August meeting allowed us the entire facility again. We had 24 members and 1 guest in attendance who brought in 21 models and their appetites.

August Meeting
THIRD QUARTER CONTEST: The third quarterly installment of the annual contest is done. We had a good showing of quality work throughout all the categories. Nice work, guys! The next and last chance to score some votes for 2009 will be in November.

BARBECUE NIGHT: It seems to be bad luck. We get rained on for all our BBQ nights, yet it doesn’t slow down the feeding frenzy at all. The group went through a pile of burgers, sausages and hot dogs like no one’s business. Special thanks go out to the cooking team, anyone who helped out, and anyone who brought in extra goodies to munch. We’ve seen bad weather for the August meetings since we started this activity, so the officers of think it would be a better idea to swap the dates of pizza night and BBQ night. June is generally cooler so it will be less brutal for grilling and pizza night can go back to its traditional night in August.

You can see pics from each meeting either at the Club Website or on Gordon’s blog: http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/

On the agenda: September
STRING THEME NIGHT: This is a theme WITH strings attached! It’s not a contest, but a theme display night. So interpret the theme anyway you like, but try to TIE it in with the STRINGS theme! (Sorry about that, I couldn’t help myself!) Use your imagination. Have fun with it!

SWAP NIGHT: Just what it sounds like. Bring in goodies to sell or trade. Also it would be a good idea to bring in some money in case the “grail” kit shows up at the right price!

THE MINUTES

July meeting allowed us to spread out a bit. We had the entire facility to ourselves for a change. We had 29 members and 1 guest in attendance who brought in 37 models. Two months in a row with great showings of work!

July Meeting

APOLLO THEME: We had a lovely variety of kits on display for the anniversary of the Apollo Mission. Vinny had, literally, a couple words on the subject and ran some NASA footage all night long.

PRIMER AND FINISHES DISCUSSION: I know I spaced out on my portion of the discussion, but luckily Frank Colucci came well prepared. Between what we had to say and additional words and suggestions from other members, we had a very educational and spirited discussion.

RESIN DISCUSSION: Matt L. showed us his latest resin casting project and showed us how the use of vacuum or pressure will improve the quality of a cast. Some good stuff!

You can see pics from each meeting either at the Club Website or on Gordon’s blog: http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/

On the agenda: August

THIRD QUARTER CONTEST: This is the third quarterly installment of the annual contest. So bring in your goodies to try to accumulate some more votes. Remember, if you built something new for the Mad Mad Model Contest, you can bring it back to enter into the annual contest. When you put your work on the table, don’t forget to include a contest entry form!

BARBECUE NIGHT: What’s summer without a good BBQ, and the BPMS has made this a part of our summer schedule for some years now. There are a couple conditions. Your dues must be paid up, and the club is tentatively charging $6 per person for food. Burgers, franks, salads and sodas are included. Any donations of extra food; eg: sausages, chips, desserts, etc.; would be greatly appreciated. The grill masters will be Vinny, Don, and your humble narrator. The officers will be keeping track of service to be sure distribution of food is appropriate. Thanks in advance for any / all assistance and cooperation in this event.

TAKE A PART / LEAVE A PART: Gordon will bring in a big basin monthly for “Take a Part / Leave a Part.” If you don’t want to bring home your spare parts, feel free to toss them into the big bin! Gordon will bring the club parts box back for each meeting for members to add or take away from. This is something we can all benefit from!

GENERATING MONEY: The club will continue to sell magnets and patches and run raffles and to generate some extra money. Can we count on you to help fund various activities and sponsorships?

PHOTO ROSTER UPDATE: It’s time to update the BPMS photo roster and that includes each member’s phone number and e-mail address. A lot of club business happens via e-mail, so it’s helpful to know of any changes. We passed a roster around at the August meeting and will do so again in July. If you didn’t see the roster at the May meeting and won’t be at the July meeting, please send any changes to Hugh A at shuvlboy [at] msn [dot] com. June was another cramped and busy meeting. We were still confined to half the space, but we did just fine. We had 28 members and 2 guests in attendance who brought in 31 models. That might be our best showing for 2009!

June Meeting
PIZZA NIGHT 2009:
Never underestimate the collective appetite of the BPMS. We did a pretty good job clearing out the pies.

IT’S A MAD MAD MAD MAD MODELING CONTEST: The theme contest sponsored by our master awards maker, Ed D., wais finally upon us. The turn out for this contest was spectacular! There were 27 entries on the tables and the quality of the work really made Ed’s job of judging very difficult. Ed’s top three were:

FRANK T. – FAST ATTACK CRAFT
HUGH A. – T-72
FRANK C. – M-1 ABRAMS

Besides the top three, Ed distributed a liberal amount of Honorable Mentions and asked everyone to tell the group a couple words about their building experiences for this theme.

I would like to thank Ed for sponsoring another BPMS theme contest while not even being a member. Very benevolent! I would also like to thank all the members who participated in this theme and made such a great show of it, and contributed to the good time. THANKS!

APOLLO THEME:
We’re having another theme night just for the fun of it. This time the theme is APOLLO. It could be a figure of the god, or the rocket, or the pilot, or anything else your imagination can come up with. Have fun with it.

PHOTO ROSTER UPDATE: It’s time to update the BPMS photo roster and that includes each member’s phone number and e-mail address. IPMS Region 2 Convention JerseyCon

Dear Chapter Contact,

As you probably are aware, NJIPMS will be hosting the Region 2 show this year. JerseyCon will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 16 & 17, 2009 at the Holiday Inn in Runnemede, New Jersey. JerseyCon is generating much excitement throughout the region and beyond! The vendor turnout will be exceptional and we are expecting tables filled with models. We are building on our success and experiences gained from our famous, annual MosquitoCon show to help make JerseyCon a Regional for the ages!

Of course, nothing would be possible without the help and support of our neighboring chapters. So, we are reaching out to ask if your club would please consider sponsoring one (or more!) trophy package(s) for JerseyCon. The cost of each package is $35.

If you can sponsor one of our trophy packages, please notify me via email as soon as possible. If you have a preference for a particular category, please indicate that as well.

We invite you to visit our web site, www.njipms.org , for more information about the show, including hotel, activity and seminar information.

Please make checks payable to "NJIPMS" and forward to our treasurer at:
Joe Smith
12 Brenner Ct.
Brick, NJ 08724
(email: Jfscharger@aol.com)

All sponsors will receive recognition at the show as well as on our web site.
We thank you in advance for your support and we look forward to seeing you at JerseyCon!

Best wishes,

Next Theme: It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Modeling Contest

“It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Modeling Contest”

Purpose: To get modelers to apply their skills to unfamiliar subjects.

Summary: Look over the kits you’ve built throughout the years and those in your kit stash. Most of us gravitate towards certain subjects, our favorites that we like to build year after year. Armor guys love tanks from WWI to the ones currently in the field. Aviation buffs build airplanes anywhere from the start of the 20th century right up to the latest fighter jets of the 21st. Sci-fi modelers often stick to their favorite genres: anime, Star Trek, Star Wars etc. Think about what subjects you love to buy and build.

Now, for this theme contest, do exactly the opposite.

If you love armor, build a biplane.
Love sci-fi? Make a WWII tank.
Enjoy building Vietnam era Phantoms? How about a dinosaur? Or maybe a spaceship?

The goal is to get us to build outside our comfort zone; to apply the skills we’ve learned over the years while building our favorite subjects to model kits we ordinarily would never consider building.

Guidelines: You may build anything you wish, any scale and subject as long as it’s not among your favorite subjects. When you submit your entry, please write next to it what is your favorite modeling category (or categories).

Sponsor: Ed D. our plaque master

A note from Gordon

Hi everyone,

Those who don't know, I had been rather occupied due to major transition of my position at work during April. Ironically, I would had been able to update April's photos if it wasn't for some guy that struck my car in May. That's right, I got into a car accident and had to devote my time and money filing a claim with the insurance company of the guy that hit me. It's been a month and I'm still chasing after his insurance company to get my car repair. I'm getting rather sick of them docking me... where's my money?!

Anyway, good news is that the BPMS Photo Blog is now up to date. All photos for April's meeting are posted. May's remaining photos is scheduled to post automatically daily.

See the BPMS Photo Blog at
http://gmobile17.blogspot.com

All postings are tagged with the modeler's name so you can find your model(s) easily.

Best regards,
G

April was another cramped and busy meeting. Maybe now that warm weather has arrived, the neighborhood kids would be more interested in sports at the BBSC instead of board games. Even in tight quarters we were able to fit in 24 members and 5 guests who brought in 19 models and 9 WIPs and FAVs. That’s a nice come back over March numbers!

April Meeting
WIP / Fav Model Night:
This activity turned out pretty well. We had several informative works in progress discussions as well as some very interesting favorites.

Take A Part / Leave A Part: Gordon will be heading this one up. Every one of us finds that we have parts left over when working on a kit. Gordon has volunteered to bring in a basin to keep any parts that you might consider tossing away. He’ll bring it in for each meeting for people to add or take away from the club parts box. This is something we can all benefit from!

Contest Night 2Q09: It’s time for another quarterly contest. Bring in models to compete. Numbers get crunched from the four quarterly contests to see who reigns over the categories at the end of the year.

Contest Skills Discussion: On a contest night we all wonder about how we did in the competition. Hugh Alcock will discuss with us how to build for IPMS contests and WIN! Bring your notebooks and tape recorders as this should prove be very educational!

Parts Box Night - Take A Part / Leave A Part: Every one of us finds that we have parts left over when working on a kit. Bring in your spare parts to share with the group. Last month Gordon brought in the basin for “Take a Part / Leave a Part.” And it already has stuff in it. So if you don’t want to bring home your spare parts, feel free to donate them to the big bin! Gordon will bring the club parts box back for each meeting for people to add or take away from. This is something we can all benefit from!

Generating Money: The club will continue to sell magnets and patches and run raffles and to generate some extra money. Can we count on you to help fund various activities and sponsorships?

Our next meeting will be on May 15, 2009.

Bulletin: April 2009

T h e M i n u t e s

by Bobby the Blue

March was another cramped and busy meeting. In Ray’s absence, Vice President Israel A. presided over 24 members and 3 guests who brought in 6 models. Six? C’mon guys! We can do better than that!

March Meeting

New Members: We acquired our first new members of 2009! Kevin A. and Tony G. came to three meetings and showed us examples of their work so we voted them in! Welcome to the fold, gents!

Decal Swap Night: Decals were brought in, traded and sold. A particular treat was a massive collection of decals that belonged to founder Joe Turner for the members to put to good use.

Well-Marked Theme Display: This didn’t go as well. Instead we had everyone who brought in a model to display tell us a couple words about it.

Loss of a Founder: Founding member of the BPMS, Joe Turner (IPMS #90!), passed away days before the January meeting. We raffled off donations from our VP, Israel, and the Trez, Jeff, and generated some money for trophy packages in Joe’s honor. We’ll, likely, be holding another raffle in March since we’ve gotten Joe’s name on some awards. Any donations of kits from the members for the cause would be greatly appreciated. Bring money for tixx.

You can see pics from each meeting either at the Club Website or on Gordon’s blog:

On the agenda: April

WIP / Fav Model Night: What are you working on? What is your favorite model? We kindly ask the members to bring in their works in progress and / or their favorite models to show and to tell the group a couple words about. We’ve had a lot of fun with this previously; I look forward to it again.

BPMS Magnets: Last month I unveiled the new BPMS magnets. Nothing too fancy, it’s the club logo and web address with a meeting reminder imprinted. The club will be selling them for a mere $1 each from now on. We, also, still have club logo patches if anyone’s interested.

Our next meeting will be on April 17, 2009.

Reminder: “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Modeling Contest” will be held on June 19, 2009

Region 1 Update 4-10-09

Hi gang,
Happy Easter and Good Friday, and happy Passover!! I hope you enjoy your secular holiday of choice!! Spring is definitely in the air, and the spring contest season is well underway. I managed to get to RepLIcon and Mosquitocon in the past few weeks, and it was great to get out and see everyone at those events. Both shows were excellent and I had a good time at each. There were some unbelievably great models on the tables which I know we'll see more of them at some of the next shows coming up.

Noreastcon is in a few weeks, and the Buffcon boys are putting the finishing touches on what will be another grand event. Bob and the guys are asking everyone attending the banquet this year to wear a gaudy Hawaiian shirt in memory of Mike Miodonski. Bob also tells me there are a few sponsorships left, so you folks that haven't done so may still do the right thing. There will be no business meeting this year, as I won't be there, but Doc Wiseman has agreed to back me up at the banquet.
I'll be out of town between 16 and 26 April. My checking e mail while away is in severe doubt, so if you send me anything, there's a good chance I may not see it until I return. Rest assured, I'll look at everything when I get back, and will follow up with you then.
This year sees another IPMS election cycle. There will be an election of e board officers, and for amendments to the C&BL's. There are multiple candidates running for some offices, as well as an important amendment regarding foreign nationals and their standing in IPMS/USA. I won't use these Updates to campaign for any particular candidate, or take a position on the amendments, but will ask ALL IPMS members in Region 1 to vote. That is very important to our Society that every member take a few minutes and vote. Vote early and often!!
The word on the streets is that I'm the only candidate for the office of DLC, so my resignation as RC is moving to the front burner. As I don't officially take the DLC seat until after the first of the new year, that gives everyone a chance to take part in the search for my replacement. Attached is a time line drawn up by Dick Montgomery for anyone who would consider taking over this job. It gives everyone ample time to react and is a transparent process designed to give anyone wishing to be RC a standardized procedure to be considered for it. Please look it over carefully, and share it with the officers and members of your chapter. If anyone has any questions, please contact either Dick or myself. Anyone interested is urged to contact Dick at DLC@ipmsusa.org and let their intentions be known. Dick will be handling the search as the current DLC, but I will have some input during the process because I'll be working with them.
Speaking of Dick, here are a few things he's asked me to pass along.
There are now two maps that everyone may find helpful and interesting. Both are based in Goggle Earth, with one showing the position of every chapter in IPMS in every part of the country. It's really helpful if your traveling and want to see of there's a chapter or contest near where you'll be. The maps are found at:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=108247286455087315132.0004652a61c20332a88a2&start=0&num=200&ll=58.722599,-73.652344&spn=26.496338,67.5&z=4
The second map locates all the IPMS approved events throughout the country. That one can be found at:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=116172974824873322878.00046337d132d455a46ac&ll=47.279229,-86.484375&spn=34.203767,67.5&z=4
Also, all chapter webmasters are asked to check the links to their chapters on the IPMS web site, and make sure they work. That includes the chapter and RC listing pages and up coming event pages. It really defeats the purpose of having them up there if something is a miss!! Please check them, and let me know if anything doesn't work. We'll get it fixed at no additional cost!!
That about brings us to the end of another one of these things. As always, please share this with the officers and members of your chapter!!

BPMS Sponsorship in Memory of Joe Turner for MosquitoCon

We have sponsored Space and Science Fiction - All Scales for the category at MosquitoCon. The announcer knows to say "The Brooklyn Plastic Modelers Society in Memory of Joe Turner” during the awards ceremony. Thanks to Hugh for his efforts to get this done.

Bulletin: March 2009

T h e M i n u t e s
by Bobby P.

February was a cramped and busy meeting. We had 29 members and 2 guests bringing in 24 models displayed for the night.

February Meeting
Sharing Is Caring: We had to share the BBSC with neighborhood youths getting in from the cold and doing something more constructive. That’s both good for the neighborhood and the kids. Some even had interest in our display. If some join up, it’s good for us. Everyone wins! We’ll probably have another couple meetings sharing space before spring sports start up.

Show Us Your Tool: This activity wasn’t nearly as vulgar as it sounded. A large number of members chipped in and told the group about the goodies they have discovered that makes life easier. Thanks to everyone who joined in.

Contest Night 1Q09: We held the first installment of the BPMS quarterly contest. Don’t worry about the results; we don’t crunch the numbers until the end of the year after the next three installments. There’s plenty of time to rack up more votes.

On the agenda: March

Decal Swap Night: This one is pretty easy, bring in decals to swap or sell. You might want to bring some cash as you never know when someone might have that sheet you’re looking for.
Well-Marked Theme Display: This will be first theme night of 2009. Just bring in something with decals and maybe think about a couple words you might tell the group about it. If you want to speak about any step of the decal process, please be prepared and we can arrange it!

Region 1 Update 03-03-09

Hi everyone,

Here we are in the month of March, and we just had our major snowstorm for the year, we got about 10" here in lovely Stamford CT. Now that that's behind us we can start looking forward to spring!! And we all know what that means, the spring show season!! I've attached the Approved Event Calendar again, as we have some additions. As always, I urge you to support your brother chapters events with sponsorship, attendance, and judging help!!

While we're on the subject of upcoming events, let me mention a few things regarding this years Noreastcon. First off is my standard message hawking sponsorships. I know there are a few chapters out there that haven't committed to sponsoring a category yet. Please consider this, as it's our regions premier event, and it benefits all of us. Don't let this opportunity pass you by. We've all heard of the untimely passing of one of IPMS Niagara Frontiers spark plugs, Mike Miodonski. As a way of honoring their passed comrade, everyone attending he banquet is asked to wear a gaudy Hawaiian shirt in Mikes memory. I'm sorry I'll miss this one, but I have to be elsewhere this time around.

The deadline for submitting nominations for Region 1 Chapter of the Year, and Person of the year close at the end of the month. Please take the time to write up your chapters achievements of the past year and send them to me. Please, make my decision hard his year. I see every newsletter and know y'all have done many things that make you uniquely qualified for Chapter of the Year. I want to name your chapter, but can't do it unless you submit a nomination. So write it up and send it, already!!

I've heard from my counterpart down in Region 12, Tim Darrah. Tim mentioned our troops in Diego Garcia are hurting for model kits and related supplies as part of the Hobbies for Heroes Program. Many of you have supported this in the past, and we're asking you to kindly help the troops on this tiny island. Contact info is as follows.

I see that IPMS CT Marine Modelers have a new web site. You can check out this fine groups activities at www.ctshipmodels.org The site is very good, and shows off some of the great work these guys do. They work in not only plastic, but wood as well. They're one of the quietest groups we have in Region 1 in terms of letting the rest of us in on their activities, but hopefully that will change with the addition of a nice web site. Check it out!!

As a reminder, this year will see the National IPMS elections. Everyone knows I'm running for the position of Director of Local Chapters, that certainly isn't a secret. There will be a few positions that see candidates running unopposed, and a few where there will be real competition for the office in question. I can't say this strongly enough, VOTE!! It doesn't matter who you vote for, well it does but I won't do any campaigning here, but cast your ballot!! It's important to the Society that all members take part in this election, and cast a ballot. Ballots will be going out shortly, and you'll be able to cast a vote via the IPMS web site. In order to vote, you need to be a member in good standing, which means you must be paid up membership wise. Now would be a good time to check your membership, and those of your chapter mates and renew if necessary. Act now to avoid the rush!!

One other thing related to the election. If I'm elected DLC, we'll need to find someone to step into my current position of Regional Coordinator. If anyone out there may be interested in a new job, let me know. I'll fill you in on what's required, and how much fun it's been to be your RC these past years. I've enjoyed working for our region, and want to leave it in good hands.

With all that out of the way, I'll close this. be safe out there!! And please, share this with the officers and members of your chapter, it belongs to them as well!!!

Bulletin: February, 2009

T h e M i n u t e s
by Bobby B2 Blue Pokorny
We started 2009 off on the right foot. We had 26 members and 3 guests bringing in 27 theme contest entries and a total of 36 models displayed for the night.

January Meeting
New Regime:
The new year brought the new prez and veep at the helm. We were actually able to hear President Ray in the back of the room.

Loss of a founder: Founding member of the BPMS, Joe Turner (IPMS #90!), passed away days before the January meeting. Our sympathies to his family. We’re working on ideas for a theme contest in his honor for the end of 2009. More to come.

I just received word that Joe Turner, long time IPMS USA member passed away last night at his sister's house in Florida .

Described by one IPMS wife, Carol Fleckenstein, he was a "unique gentleman, a genuine intellectual and a good friend", sentiments I heartily agree with and cannot improve upon. Along with Bert Berg and the rest of the Brooklyn Plastic Modelers Society, Joe was in on the ground floor of helping make the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City a reality long before she docked at Pier 86 and became a museum ship, by supporting the foundation with model exhibits. When Bert's eyesight began failing him, he recruited me to serve as the IPMS model supervisor for the Intrepid in 1981, about a year before the museum opened.

Joe had already completed some research on the Intrepid's Air Groups and matched it up with available models and decals. His research was the basis of the two of the first exhibits built for the Intrepid Museum - deck loads of aircraft that served aboard the Intrepid in 1944 and 1956. The latter deck exhibit was incorporated into a visual comparison of the deck sizes between the USS Intrepid 1956 and the USS Enterprise. Bert recruited me to research the Enterprise Air Groups against available models and decals and I settled on markings in a Koku Fan (remember that Japanese magazine!) for the Starship's 1978 RIMPAC exercise. BPMS modelers built the Intrepid aircraft and NJIPMS modelers, under my supervision, built the aircraft models for the Enterprise deck.

Joe held one of the low (early) IPMS USA membership numbers and he was a regular fixture at IPMS USA local, regional and national conventions, as well the IPMS UK show at Telford . You could not miss Joe if you saw him at a model convention - he was a giant of a man towering over other average height modelers. If any UK Hyperscalers know a Brit modeler named Chris Peacock, please let him know about Joe's passing. It's my understanding that Joe often pal'd around with Mr.Peacock on his trips to the UK .

Joe worked for a long time in the airline industry and held some pretty strong opinions on it (especially Pan Am), which he was not shy about sharing. Some time after he retired he moved from Brooklyn to North Carolina . As with Bert Berg, Joe's eyesight (also never good to begin with) starting deteriorating even further after his retirement - certainly a blow to any modeler. You could not tell that from being with Joe, though. He was always upbeat and enthusiastic - never a downer crepe-hanging type.

The modeling community has lost another stalwart member (in Joe's case, a veritable monument). I'll miss him lumbering toward me, like one of those Lord of the Rings tree creatures, in a vendor area, or IPMS model display room.

Happy Flight, Joe

Region 1 Update 02-12-09

Greetings and Salutations,

I hope everyone is taking advantage of the warm weather the past few days to shake off the winter blahs, and get outside, if event for a short while!! But let's get down to business.

Attached is an updated Region 1 Events listing. You'll note a few additions that have come in since the last update. Syracuse and our latest chapter addition, IPMS Northeast Military Modelers Association, also known as AMPS East have been added to the list. Please note the dates of these fine events.

We're right smack in the middle of the window for submitting nominations for Region 1 Chapter of the Year, and Person of the Year. The deadline is still 31 March for getting your nominations to me, with the presentations to be made at Noreastcon.

Speaking of Noreastcon, I won't be attending this year due to a scheduling conflict. I hate missing it, as I've attended every one for 24 years. I have to be in Florida during the same period, and logistically I can't make it work to be in both places at the same time. With that in mind, I'm canceling the business meeting, and have asked my good friend, Doc Wiseman to stand in for me at the banquet. Doc has graciously agreed to make the presentations for Chapter and Person of the Year, award the Noreastcon Cup, and the other things I've normally done at the banquet. But just because I won't be at Noreastcon doesn't mean I'll pass on an opportunity to hawk sponsorships for the event!! (Here it comes, wait for it!!) Our hosts IPMS Niagara Frontier are still looking for sponsorships of both regular and special categories. Please consider sponsoring a category at the premier Regional held in the USA!! Our hosts are working their collective behinds off to host another great event, and we all need to help them out by sponsoring a trophy package. Please help them out!!

If anyone wants to know why it's important to remain a chartered IPMS chapter, and you host an event, here's some news that will underscore that fact. Beginning in April, any event you want to list in Finescale Modeler magazine will cost $25.00 per month. As Scale Auto Enthusiast is also published by Kalmbach, I'll assume the pricing will be the same for the publication as well. These ads have always been free, now you'll pay for them. Listing on the IPMS web site and in the Journal will still be free, free, free!!!!! And don't forget, your chapter also receives a 1/4 page ad for the same price, free!!

With that, I'll close this. Please support your brother chapters events by sponsoring an award package, attending, and helping judge. They'll appreciate it, and you'll be happy you did!! As always, please share this with the officers and members of your chapter.

Thanks for the awesome support last month in response to our special effort to provide car kits and colors suitable for cars to the MPs in Basra. Please remember the special requests by this group the next time you’re at the hobby shop or shopping on the Internet. We only have a couple of months left before this group of soldiers starts packing up and heading home.
