BPMS Dinner at Outback Steakhouse: 12/19/2006

Hi Guys!

Jimmy's trying to get a posse together for a dinner at the Outback Steakhouse in Bay Terrace, Queens.

Here's a google map:

Please email Jimmy directly, or the club, and I will forward to to him for you.

Modeling scam!!!

Hi Guys,

BPMS just got a mailing for the stupidest modeling scam of all time -- bar none.

http://www.internationalmodelregistries.com/

For a mere $30 per year, you can register your model airplane with International Modeling Registries! $300 buys lifetime registration! And they're offering club discounts!

In exchange for your money, they give you a registration number for a model you built and own, and they put a picture of the model on their website.

What does that do for you? It makes your model unique! It increases the value!

The pitch is very smooth and promises to unite the modeling community worldwide. The website is also offering searchable libraries of modeling tips and tricks and all the same stuff we have with free websites or reputable publications.

I may be wrong, but I don't think any modeler is stupid enough to fall for this. If Massachusetts has an attorney general, he sure should look at this outfit for fraud.

We can get a laugh out of this pitch at our next meeting, but I do think IPMS ought to take a look into this to keep them from using our mailing list.

Frank

Hi Frank,
I also received this "great" offer, and checked their web site. Most of tabs take you to non-existent areas. It's indeed a rip off. Let the buyer beware!!

Intrepid freed from mud

From CNN.COM
Intrepid freed from mud, under way
POSTED: 8:44 a.m. EST, December 6, 2006
NEW YORK (AP) -- A month after a failed attempt to move the Intrepid, the historic aircraft carrier was freed Tuesday from the Hudson River anchorage where it had sat for nearly a quarter of a century.

"This old baby is moving," a joyous Intrepid Foundation President Bill White said aboard the vessel.

Some crew members cried and gave each other high-fives and hugs. Onlookers ashore cheered.

"It's like it used to be, only better. There's no bloodshed," said elated passenger Felix Novelli, who served on the Intrepid crew during World War II. "I'm 18 again. And I have my beautiful broad right here, my ship Intrepid."

As the Intrepid passed the World Trade Center site, about 20 former crew members unfurled a 50-feet by 90-feet American flag and stood in a silent salute.

The trip began with considerable effort, as the historic aircraft carrier-turned-museum inched haltingly away from its anchorage.

Finally, it began moving at about 3 to 4 knots, its pier growing more and more distant.

"Move baby, move baby!" the crew and passengers yelled. Then, "We did it, we did it!"

In the previous attempt, thick mud had proved too strong for six "tractor tugs" exerting some 30,000 horsepower.

A battle occured this time, too -- the blue water was churned dark brown as tugboats strained to inch the giant vessel away from its longtime home.

"If she doesn't move, we are going to jump in and push her," a former crew member, 84-year-old Joe Kobert, said on the Intrepid's deck before the behemoth began to move on Tuesday.

Asked later if he was glad he didn't have to push the ship, Cobert said, "We did push. All the crew members. How do you think we got out of there?"

Recalling his years on the ship, Cobert said, "It brings back memories. It was always thrilling when we were under way. We'd yell to everyone onshore, 'See Ya when we get back."'

The smaller boats moved the ship stern first into the center of the Hudson River, then nudged the bow until it was parallel with the shore and began heading downstream.

The carrier was being towed, still backward, down the river toward New York Harbor for a five-mile trip to a shipyard in Bayonne, New Jersey, where it will undergo renovations.

A Fire Department boat sailed alongside the Intrepid, shooting red, white and blue colored water from its hoses. River traffic resumed after being halted while the ship was pulling away from the pier.

On the first attempt, on November 6, the 36,000-ton carrier budged only a few feet before the propellers dug into the bottom, the tide dropped, and the mission was scrubbed.

Three weeks of dredging removed nearly 40,000 cubic yards of muck from under the ship and around its four giant screws. Based on an assessment by military engineers and tugboat operators, officials had said they expected a smooth departure for the 64-year-old World War II hero ship.

The Intrepid survived five Japanese kamikaze suicide plane attacks and lost 270 crew members in the last two years of the Pacific war. It later served off Korea and Vietnam and as a recovery ship for NASA astronauts.

Decommissioned in the late 1970s, it was destined for the salvage yard when rescued by New York developer Zachary Fisher and transformed into a floating military and space museum that opened in 1982, recently drawing upward of 700,000 visitors a year.

Intrepid officials said the $60 million overhaul, lasting up to two years, would include stem-to-stern "refurbishment and renovation" to repair deterioration and open up long-closed areas to the public.

The ship's exhibits were put in storage and most of its 20-plus vintage warplanes were shrink-wrapped for protection during the hiatus.

DAVE COCKRUM, 1943-2006

Dave (pic from the BPMS archives / Frank C.)

Long time member of the BPMS, Dave Cockrum passed away recently after several years of being very ill. Dave's art will stand forever emblazoned on everyone's memories. Without Dave, there wouldn't have been the X-Men and many other contributions to comic book art. A good retrospective of Dave's career can be found on the Steve Bunche Blog (He was also a former employee of Marvel.)

Region 1 Update 11-22-06

Greetings everyone,
Well, we're about half way through the rechartering process, and there are still chapters out there that haven't submitted their paperwork yet. I hope every chapter that hasn't yet done so is working on getting it all wrapped up. The process has been greatly speeded up with the new system, and never before has it been so quick and easy as it is right now.
One part of the process that is still drawing questions is the meteor Gift Certificate. let me explain it again for everyone, in case there are any lingering questions. Meteor Productions is awarding one $25.00 gift certificate to a recipient in each IPMS chapter when that chapter recharter's this year. The chapter is asked to pick an IPMS member who they believe has provided the chapter the best service in the past year. And the answer to the most asked question is yes, the recipient MUST be an IPMS/USA member in good standing!! That member may be chosen any way the chapter feels appropriate. They then forward that members name and IPMS number to the me. I'll forward it to the DLC directly. The DLC forwards the name to Meteor, and the person named receives the certificate directly from Meteor. I've asked each chapter to designate their recipient when they send the payment check to Dick to cover their rechartering. That's all there is to it.
This program is a way for Meteor to say thank you to IPMS, and the member chapters. Every chapter has a member that should receive this gift. Please don't forget to provide that name when submitting your payment.
In an effort to ensure every chapter has adequate time to complete the rechartering process, I'll be contacting each Chapter Contact directly from all chapters that haven't submitted their paperwork yet. Remember, the deadline for getting everything completed is 31 December. Time is running out!!
I received this message to pass along from DLC Dick and the IPMS E Board.
Happy Thanksgiving from the IPMS E-Board, RCs, and administrative staff. We wish you a fruitful and relaxing holiday. And, of course, we certainly hope you can find some time to get to the workbench and have some quality time with some plastic, exopy, paper, or materials of your choice.
We are now just beyond the halfway point in the charter renewal cycle. At this time 71 chapters have completed the renewal process. 35 of those chapters have designated a recipent for the Meteor Gift Certificate. Regions 3,4, and 5 are leading the way, not only in getting renewals taken care of, but also in taking advantage of the Meteor offer. While its not a race or contest, it is important that your club successfully completes the charter renewal process prior to Dec 31, 2006. The new charter process can be accomplished in as short a period of time as 10 minutes by the chapter contact or other club official. A 3 month window is more than enough time to get the job done. Because the process is new, and much easier than in past years, you may not be familiar with the steps to be taken. Please do not hesitate to contact your RC or myself for assistance. Unless extremely unusual circumstances prevail, no grace period will be extended. If such circumstances occur it is your responsibility to contact the DLC (dmontgomery8327@sbcglobal.net / 210-681-7945) prior to Jan 1, 2007.
There are a number of reasons why I encourage your club to renew its charter. Two reasons are new to the 2006-2007 chartering cycle. First, the Meteor Gift Certificate program is Meteor's way of saying "Thanks" to IPMS and IPMS members. Meteor will award a $25 gift certificate to an IPMS member from your club as soon as IPMS clears your charter renewal. All that is required is that your club successfully completes the renewal process, and that the recipient is an IPMS member. Secondly, as a service to our chartered clubs, IPMS will list your contest on the IPMS Contest Map located at http://www.frappr.com/ipmscontests. At this time there are 56 IPMS events shown on this map.
I taken up enough of your time..... thanks for all that you do to keep your club informed and current with items related to IPMS. We are definately an organization 'By Modelers and For Modelers" and you are major contributor to successful communication between your club and the national office.
Dick Montgomery
IPMS Director of Local Chapters
Back to me!! I'll close this by wishing everyone and their families a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Region 1 Update 11-14-06

From the Email box:
Hi everyone,

Some news, and a few observations this time out.

We're about half way through the rechartering process. By now, all chapters should have a handle on the process, and be working on getting their documentation ready to be submitted. Just a few reminders here, when you get everything set, e mail it to me, and I'll forward it to Dick Montgomery. And it is important that each chapter submit a member to receive the $25.00 Meteor Gift Certificate. Be sure to supply that information in addition to the recipients IPMS number when you send your check to Dick. Whoever you decide is getting it must be an member of IPMS/USA. It's important to remember that if your chapter is holding elections before the rechartering period is complete, or immediately thereafter, you don't need to wait to complete the rechartering process. It's advisable to submit the Fact Sheet with the current officers, and then update the information after the election is held. And as always, contact me if you're having difficulty in completing the form.
I received this the other day, and think it's a terrific idea. Good idea Mike!!!
This post was in the forum recently. It was posted by Mike Novosad of IPMS Mid Michigan. This is one of those "best practices" ideas that should be shared with other clubs and only IPMS can share it effectively due to our excellent communications network.

"During the ride back from the Nationals this past summer, we were listening to loud music and feeling good about the conventional and discussed how much we enjoyed ourselves. Our chapter president offered a great idea to create more interest and model building diversity within our chapter. I was "asked" to manage the program. Here is how it works:

Each month our chapter will purchase a model ($20.00 kit), and by a drawing (those interested in the build will place their name in a box) one of the chapter members will receive the kit to build. We also have volunteer "building buddies" available for those builders who may be out of their normal modeling comfort range. The building buddy can offer technical assistance but cannot participate in actually assembling or painting the model. The builder will have three months to build it, and at the end of the three months will return the built kit and offer a verbal report to the chapter members at our monthly meeting, plus a written review (for our newsletter). They get to keep the kit after that. Monthly updates are required to assure that the model is being worked on. If not, they must return the kit and the process starts over.

Our first drawing was for aircraft. In October it was armor, and November is automotive. We also plan to have figures, fantasy, sci-fi and ships (maybe). So we will cover the full range of the hobby.

Our chapter also has an annual award for the "Modeler of the Year". Points are given for attending meetings, entering contests, bringing built models, submitting articles for the newsletter, and offering modeling-related seminars for the group. The Modeler of the Year is awarded a year's membership in the National IPMS, plus gets to take a snazzy trophy home to show the wife that his allowance is well spent on modeling. A part of the Builder/Review program is to offer opportunities to all members to achieve this annual award by earning additional points.

Since this is a new program the interest for diversity is somewhat lacking. We have gone through two drawings so far and each drawing only had about three builder volunteers. The November drawing is automotive, and few guys in the club build cars. We are after them, plus the aircraft, ship and armor builders to volunteer for this drawing.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to spark the enthusiasm for more volunteers? We have considered threats and public floggings, but decided against those tactics. We have a great group of talented modelers, and would like to see their talents exposed to other aspects of the hobby. I would hate to see this program die for lack of interest."
I had the opportunity to join the Wings and Wheels gang for a very nice day at the New England Air Museum at Bradley Airport this past Sunday. They were part of an Open Cockpit day held in conjunction with Veterans Day celebrations, and participated with an awesome display. While we were located as far from the main entrance as was physically possible, and still be in the Museum, we were set up right under the wing of the S-44. The outside weather really was awful, but inside was very cool!! There were about 12 Wings and Wheels members, in addition to myself and Mike Gondor, President of IPMS Stratford in attendance. Participants brought a good many models for display, and some of the folks were actually working on models while there. A good crowd came through during the day, and some very fine comments were heard regarding the quality of the work displayed. As is the case with many public displays such as this, the small children were compelled to "reach out, and touch" a few of the models. This is always a problem where small children get overwhelmed by what they're seeing, but luckily, nothing was damaged.

I hadn't been to the museum in a few years, and it was nice to see the changes that have been made since my last visit. The most impressive display, (other that the models of course!!!) was the recently restored B-29. I had an opportunity to get inside this aircraft a number of yeas ago when it was still a wreck. The restoration staff of the museum should be very proud of the work they did to restore this aircraft to it's former glory. It's out- frakin'- standing!! My sincere thanks to Al LeFleche and the rest of the Wings and Wheels crew for inviting Mike and me to be a part of this event.

There is still no word on any chapter willing to host Noreastcon past 2008. If your chapter would like to submit a bid, contact me, and I'll be happy to forward the guidelines needed to get a running start on the process. It isn't too early to start planning a bid!!

That seems to be all for now, so this will end mercifully!! Until next time.........

The Intrepid is stuck!

From CNN.COM
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/06/ussintrepid.ap/index.html

Aircraft carrier stuck in New York City mud
POSTED: 2:00 p.m. EST, November 6, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- The legendary World War II aircraft carrier USS Intrepid got stuck in deep Hudson River mud Monday as powerful tugboats fought to pull it free to tow the floating museum down river for a $60 million overhaul.

The mission was scrubbed at around 10:30 a.m. as the tide went down, said Dan Bender, a Coast Guard spokesman.

Officials weren't sure Monday when they would try to move the Intrepid again, or whether they might try instead to leave it in place and refurbish it in its Manhattan berth, Intrepid President Bill White said at a news conference.

The next unusually high tide is December 6, but that will be about a foot lower than Monday's tide, which officials had thought would help float the carrier free of the sticky mud, he said.

After 24 years at the same pier on Manhattan's West Side, the warship that survived five Japanese kamikaze attacks began inching backward out of its berth, but the tugs moved it only about 15 feet before its giant propellers jammed in the thick mud. The decommissioned war ship no longer has engines of its own.

"We knew it was not going to come out like a cruise ship," said Matt Woods, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum's vice president for operations.

Six tugboats had strained to move the giant ship.

"We were able to move her 15 feet, and then she came to a halt. We tried to add more power with another tugboat but we couldn't wiggle her free," said Jeffrey McAllister, the chief pilot of the tugboat operation.

"We were missing our open window. We had to give up because the tides were going down," he added. "She was moving, we were hopeful, she started to creep along but then she stopped."

Monday's departure was timed to take advantage of the yearly high tide so the tugs could pull the 27,000-ton ship out of the slip where it has rested in up to 17 feet of mud. Removal of 600 tons of water from the Intrepid's ballast tanks gave the ship added buoyancy, and dredges removed 15,000 cubic yards of mud to create a channel from dockside to deeper water.

The planned $60 million refurbishment, which is expected to take up to 2 years, will include opening up more interior spaces to the public, upgrading its exhibits and a bow-to-stern paint job. The pier also is to be rebuilt. The city is contributing $17 million, the state $5 million, the federal government $36 million, plus $2 million in private funds.

Elected officials, veterans who served on the Intrepid and others had waited on the flight deck for the beginning of the journey five miles down the river to a dry dock in Bayonne, New Jersey. Helicopters flew overhead; New York Police Department blue-and-white power boats, Fire Department boats and a Coast Guard cutter were on hand to accompany the aircraft carrier.

"The Intrepid stands for everything we believe in ... our freedom and our values," Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said at the send-off ceremony before the tugs began their work.

The final mooring lines were cast off at the order of 80-year-old retired Rear Adm. J. Lloyd "Doc" Abbot Jr., who served two years as Intrepid's skipper in 1960-62 and was named honorary commander for the day.

"It was the best job I ever had," Abbot said, standing once again on the ship's deck. "Intrepid had a soul of her own. How can a hunk of iron have a soul, you may ask. But I loved her. She kept me safe and at times I kept her safe."

The Intrepid serves as a living memorial to the arms services, a tourist attraction that draws hundreds of thousands people a year and, if the need arises, will become as an emergency operation center for city and federal authorities. The FBI used it as an operation center after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Region 1 Update 10-26-06

Greetings everyone,
Sorry for such a long time between updates. Today is a great time to put one out, as I get to sit home a recover from a minor workplace accident. It hurts a bit, but I think I'll survive!! Now, on to all the news that chews!!!
It's time for the annual force march known as rechartering!! I sent out all documents relating to rechartering on the first of October. Every chapter should have gotten them, so y'all should have looked them over and begun your ordeal. Actually, the process is much more streamlined due to the efforts of our DLC, Dick Montgomery. I also want to remind everyone to submit the name of your Meteor Gift Certificate recipient when you send the check back to Dick. Remember, the recipient MUST be a national member, so send along their IPMS number with their name. I'd also recommend you save the form after you send it back to me. If you update it through the coming year, next years rechartering will go that much faster. I'm also saving each form as it comes back.
I'd also like to announce a program, new to IPMS regarding all Regionals, including our own Noreastcon. Aerospace Modeler Magazine is offering a great package for IPMS Regional Conventions, and I've attached the announcement to this update for your viewing pleasure. I hope all future hosts of Noreastcon take advantage of this very generous offer. If you plan to host, and would like more information, please contact my counterpart in Region 10, Don Kehrer at: dakehrer@adelphia.net He's taking the point for IPMS involvement, and is very knowledgeable regarding the process. Thanks Don!!!
An issue recently came up where one of our brother Region 1 chapters sought an insurance certificate for their upcoming event without going through the correct process of approval. While almost all chapters are on the stick with the process, I just want to reiterate that you must have RC approval before submitting the Event Registration form found on the IPMS web site. Dick will not process your event, nor will an IC be issued without going through the process. Please work with me to get your event through the formalities in a timely manner. I'll do what I can to make it as painless as possible!!
The fall show season is in full swing, and there have been some really fantastic events this year. Please support your brother chapter's events to the max!! Trophy sponsorships, attendance, and helping judge at these events goes a long way to aid and assist the many fine events we enjoy.
And speaking of events, our own Noreastcon is taking shape, but there may be a major announcement coming in the next few days regarding the dates. I'll let everyone know right away when I get the information. We currently have a host on deck for the 08 edition, and beyond that we're wide open, with no hosts on the horizon. Please consider taking on hosting duties for 09 and beyond. If your chapter, or group of chapters may be interested, let me know, I'll be happy to send you the guidelines and work with you to make you event a success. Now would be a great time to start a planning cycle for 09 and beyond!!
I'd also like to report that my counterpart in Region 5, Jack Bruno has stood down from his RC post. No replacement has been named yet, and I'll miss Jack's input. Good luck Buddy, and stay in touch!!
With all that up front, it's time to close this. Now stop reading e mails, and get back to your modeling bench, I hear the plastic calling you!! That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Bulletin: October 2006

T H E M I N U T E S
by Bobby P.

September had a great turn out. There were 29 members and 1 guest in attendance who brought a grand total of 25 models including a bunch of lovely blue ones.

SEPTEMBER MEETING!!!
BLUE MODEL NIGHT: We’ve already had “Green” and “Gray” themed nights this year. We had BLUE model night last month. We had a bunch of things going on, and totally spaced on the discussion part. Oops!

SWAP NIGHT: All you have to say is “swap night” and guys bring stuff in to sell. You don’t even have to say it and there’s stuff for sale! Needless to say, there were exchanges of kits for money at the meeting.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE: We observed a moment of silence for Larry Muntner who had recently passed away. He’ll be missed.

STAR WARS / STAR TREK Theme Contest: In a nutshell, build something from Star Trek or Star Wars! Many more details can be found in this Bulletin.

On the agenda: October
WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT: Got stuff you’re working on? It doesn’t matter what stage it’s in, bring it in so we can see it! Be prepared to tell us a couple words about your projects. This has always been a fun and educational activity!

NOMINATIONS: Time flies. It’s already been two years since Vinny took over as President with Jimmy as the Veep. I guess we’ll see who’s next on the conga line as nominations for elected positions occur this meeting.

Our Location: Bergen Beach Sports Complex
From Belt Pkwy: Take exit 11N - Flatbush Avenue North. Go North on Flatbush Avenue and make a right onto Avenue U (Kings Plaza). Continue on Avenue U to Bergen Avenue; Make a right onto Bergen Avenue. Go straight on Bergen Avenue 3 blocks. Sports Complex on left.

THEMES FOR 2006 December: Star Wars / Star Trek Anniversaries Theme
The December Theme Contest will be a combination STAR WARS / STAR TREK Theme Contest. This will commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Star Trek and the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars. The sponsors are: Jeff Eng, Rob Garitta, Ray Keegan, Scott Margo, and Bobby Pokorny. As you may notice, that’s a lion share of the sci-fi modelers of the club. I’ve designed entry forms that will have a registration number and not names on it. We will, likely, have other people judge this one so we may enter the contest as well. The theme: Build any Star Wars or Trek kit. This is to celebrate 30 / 40 years of the best science fiction that world had ever known. There are TONS of kits out there to kit any taste, style and budget. I recently ran a search for “Star Wars Model” on ebay and found anything from dirt-cheap plastic kits all the way up to limited edition resin kits. With that said we already have a plan for awards, and many certificates for certain works that may include:
  • “Most Bad-Assed Starship,”
  • “Best Cross-Over / What If,”
  • “Unusual Paint Job,”
  • “Best Hot Rod,”
  • “Best Legs,”
  • “Best Figure,”
  • “You came in that???”
  • “Best Weathered,”
  • “Coolest Hero,”
  • “Toughest Adversary.”
Who can honestly say they don’t have a single Star Trek or Star Wars model in their stacks? So we hope to see a lot of people try something different and build for this. If you should have any questions, feel free to speak with the sponsors directly.

How's this for a Star Wars / Trek crossover?

20-21 OCT Region 2 Convention Update - 2 weeks to go!

Modelers,
Just two weeks to the Region 2 Convention!! We got the crummy weather out of the way this weekend, heavy rains and tidal flooding, so that it will be sunny and pleasant for TIDEWATERCON. Here is a brief update.
- The list of seminars and speakers are posted. We have an impressive list including Dana Bell, Dave Baker, Dave Klaus, Floyd Werner and Lynn Ritger. The seminars will go on Friday evening and through the day on Saturday - so plan your arrival accordingly so you do not miss out.
- We have added more vendors and have a good variety. There are still tables available if you want to thin your collection. One vendor that we have just added is the F-14 Tomcatter Sunsetter Association (made of of former F-14 officers and aircrew) that will be selling merchandise commemorating the retirement of the Tomcat.
- We will also have special display of 1/48 F-14 models built as part of the Sunsetter symposium that went on a few weeks ago at the Convention Center.
- We have the free tour on Friday to the Fighter Factory's operational facility where Jerry Yagen keeps his restored aircraft; it is already busting at the seams. The tour leaves the VBCC at 3:00pm and returns by 6:00pm in time for the first seminars. This is a great opportunity! We will be convoying down to the site. Please email me to sign up.
- Trophy packages - we still have trophy packages available at just $35 a set. If your club or individuals in your club want to provide sponsorship, please email direct. The list of remaining packages is on the convention website.
- Raffle - We are looking for donations to make the raffle particularly spectacular. We will have two raffles - one will be the standard raffle of kits, books and aftermarket goodies. The other will be for a special a piece of art work donated by Jan Rucks the widow on the late owner of Combat Models - John Rucks. Those tickets will understandably be priced a little hire.
- Club Displays. Tables are still available at $15 a pice if your club wants to have a display table. Time is running short so please email me as soon as possible if interested.
- We will be collecting donations for to send to the Soldiers, Marines, Airman and Sailors in Iraq/Afghanistan - we are calling it "Toys for Troops".
- Discount rooms at the Double Tree have closed. However, if you have been procrastinating call the hotel, they still may honor the IPMS rate. If not there are plenty of hotels nearby with good rates at this time of year.
We have worked hard to bring the diverse modeling community together for this two day event. We look forward to being your hosts and will have our ears open for ideas in 2008. Please check our website for the latest updates - we have changes the layout to make it easier for you to find information. http://www.ipmstidewater.org/2con_home.htm
See you in Virginia Beach in two weeks!

TIDEWATERCON Region2 Convention October 20-21 - Update

Modelers,
We are about a month away from the Region 2 Convention on October 20th and 21st. Please mark you calendars and plan to attend, this will be a exciting event. Let me elaborate on what is new.
- A FLYOVER by a Fighter Factory warbird. As you may have heard, Jerry Yagen has moved his operational planes to Virginia Beach. He has agreed to a flyby weather, airspace and maintenance permitting. We are optimistic! He is leaning toward either his Spitfire or Yak 3! The event will be sometime Saturday morning and I will send out an email when the time firms up. So plan to get to the show early, you don't want to miss this one!
- We also have a tour of the Fighter Factory operational hangars scheduled for Friday afternoon. There is no charge for this event, but given the late notice there is no bus, we will caravan in private vehicles. The hangars are only 20-30 minutes south. Departure will be 3:00pm from the Virginia Beach Convention Center and we will return by 6:00pm in time for the seminars to start. Included in the collection are a PBY, F4U, Avenger, Sea Fury, Spitfire Mk IX, Hurricane Mk XII, P-51D, P-40E, Stearman, Tigermoth, AD-4 Skyraider, PO-2, I-15 Bis and I-153. There is more info at his website: http://www.fighterfactory.net/ . There is currently no limit on this tour, but if you want to attend please email me by October 13th.
- Speakers - will run from 6:00pm - 9:00pm on Friday and 9:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday. Here are the highlights:
Friday: 6-7pm - National gold winner Joe Koenig on Armor Detailing or Professional modeler Richard Morgan on Modeling from Plan to Plastic
7-8pm - Author Lynn Ritger on the BF-109 (what else!) or Sci-Fi/Fantasy modeler Wes hawkins on Figure Painting
8-9pm - Entrepeneur Dave Klaus "How Meteor does historical Research" or locals Dave Thomas and John Gunther "your field/battle box"

2-3pm - Andrew Rogers Preparing CAD Files for CNC/Stereolithography Work or David Jacobs Armor Weathering
The schedule may change so check the Region 2 website http://www.ipmstidewater.org/2con_home.htm for updates.
Vendors - Meteor (2 tables of their latest releases), Pace hobbies, Black Box, Cobra Co., Chesapeake Model Design, Nostalgic Plastic, Rare Plane detective, Iron Ship Wright.
Displays - The Elite Fleet RC ships, RC tank batleground, RC Big rigs, and a Monster stretched pickup.
There will be a Raffle both Friday and Saturday with some very nice prizes
Last but not least a contest that promises to bring out some really fine workmanship.
If you plan on attending - please send in your registration to save time and hassle at the door. If you need a hotel the great rate at the Double Tree is good through 20 September, don't wait to get a room.
Trophy Packages - We have too many packages left for sponsorship, almost all at the basic rate of $35 for category 1st, 2nd, 3rd and OOB. We have a few "best of" awards left - Diorama and Space Sci-fi. We would appreciate the assistance of clubs and individuals in trophy sponsorship. At no additional charge to you, we are adding an engraved plate with sponsorship information to each award. But there is a lead time for the engraving so please act now if you want to sponsor an award. Our websites lists the categories still available.
A lot of dedicated people in IPMS Tidewater with help from Hampton Road Scale Modelers and Northern Virginia have put in a lot of time to bring Region 2 and our friends in the surrounding regions an exciting show. This is an event that you do not want to miss! See you in Virginia Beach!
Best regards,

Star Wars / Star Trek Theme Contest Reminder: December Meeting

December: Star Wars / Star Trek Anniversaries Theme

“Most Bad-Assed Starship,”
“Best Cross-Over / What If,”
“Unusual Paint Job,”
“Best Hot Rod,”
“Best Legs,”
“Best Figure,”
“You came in that???”
“Best Weathered,”
“Coolest Hero,”
“Toughest Adversary,”
“Best Use of Lego.”

Who can honestly say they don’t have a single Star Trek or Star Wars model in their stacks? So we hope to see a lot of people try something different and build for this. If you should have any questions, feel free to speak with the sponsors directly.

Bulletin: September 2006

T H E M I N U T E S

by Bobby the Blue

August had a great turn out. It appears that bbq has even more people coming out of the woodwork! There were 32 members and 3 guests in attendance who brought a grand total of 25 models.

AUGUST MEETING!!!
NEW MEMBERS: It was the third meeting for Anthony and Matt L., so we just HAD to vote in this enthusiastic father / son team. Welcome to the fold, guys!

CONTEST NIGHT: We had our third installment of the annual contest. There were many spectacular models on the tables. The competition is fierce this year!

BBQ NIGHT: This was a brand new activity added to the roster this year. Vinny brought this to fruition; it was his idea, he made it happen, and he even did a lot of the cooking. $3 bought each person a one-way ticket to tasty grub (and gluttony!). Thanks to all the guys who pitched in and assisted.

LOSS OF A MEMBER: After the last meeting the officers were contacted by Mitchell Muntner. His brother, Larry had passed away from a heart attack. He was 59 and is survived by his twin brother, Mitchell, and bride of four months, Alicia Harris.

Larry was a life long Brooklynite. His High School years were spent at Erasmus Hall and he studied accounting at Kingsborough Community College. Earlier, he was a payroll clerk and for the last 20 years he worked as a mail clerk for the Department of Labor.

Since he’s been a member of the BPMS for many years (the Brothers joined back during our Floyd Bennett Field days), I think we will remember Larry best for his enthusiasm for so many aspects of the modeling hobby. He was part of a modeling team with his twin brother Mitchell and for 25 years they enjoyed building plastic as well as radio controlled models. More recently they discovered the joy of building wooden ships.

In his brother’s memory, Mitchell plans to keep the hobby in his heart and his life.

On the agenda: September

BLUE MODEL NIGHT: We’ve already had “Green” and “Gray” themed nights this year. We’d be very pleased if the membership would bring out some BLUE models for the September meeting. Any shape or form, as long as we see some blue on it! We’ll probably ask each person to tell us a little about his/her blue model.

SWAP NIGHT: Summer’s nearly over. You might want to make some space, so here’s a chance to bring in stuff you’d like to sell or trade. Don’t forget to bring money, too, cash is king and there’s no tab at this bar!

More updates on Gordon's BPMS Galleries

Gordon has been hard at work on his BPMS Galleries and asked me to remind you all to check in frequently for updates:

Region 1 Approved Events

Hi everyone,

Attached, at long last is the update Region 1 Events calendar. I know I've been promising it for a few updates, but life has a way of getting in the way.

You'll notice a few changes in the Spring 07 section from years past. Both the Wings and Wheels event, and RepLIcon have moved a few weeks into March. My thanks to both groups for helping free up some weekends in April. I think the new look to the schedule is fantastic, and should really help all the spring events get more fannies in the seats!! I see a nice balance and with only one day with two events, 15 march. I think we'll have the best opportunity to make all the shows. The only day that has two events is 15 March. MASSCAR and Buffcon certainly don't offer any conflict due to the fact they're on different ends of the region.

We're still a number of votes short in making the Amendment vote valid. Please continue to urge your members to cast their ballot. If it were made any easier, someone from IPMS would go to your home and move your hand to make your vote. But that's something you'll have to do yourselves!!! Take a few minutes and be part of it!!

Now that the summer is drawing to a close, I suppose many will be returning to the workbench. With the great events we have on tap for the fall and spring, there will be plenty of opportunities to bring our work out and show it off. Lets look forward to a fun and enjoyable fall season. Until next time...............

RC2-IPMS

Modelers,

We are just 60 days away from the IPMS Region 2 Convention at the new Virginia Beach Convention Center . As you undoubtedly have heard, this will be the site of the 2008 IPMS Nationals. We have an busy two days planned and look forward to seeing all of your clubs out there. So here is what is in store.

Vendors - we have sold 50 of 89 tables and have commitments from: Pace Hobbies, PJ's Hobbies, Martineer Press, Rare Plane Detective, Collectibles in Action, Byrd Aviation Books, Commanders Series Models - Iron Shipwright., 4+ Publications North America, Cobra Co. and Black Box. If your favorite vendor is not on the list please give him/her a nudge - I would love to see armor and automobile vendors.

Speakers - We have two days of speakers lined up including; Dana Bell, Dana Potts (former CAG speaking on the F-14), Floyd Werner, Dave Klaus, Lynn Ritger, illustrator A.D.Baker III with a balance of research, historical and how to topics.

The raffle will run both days. We are looking for donations

We have displays in the lobby area including the War Memorial Museum, a monster truck, an RC tank battle ground, and local clubs. For the families, if they are not at the beach, Make and Take, Merle Norman, and the Virginia Zoo.

And last but not least we have a contest. Region 2 is blessed with some great modelers, so there will be no doubt some eye-popping models on display.

The hotel rates are reasonable in October and the Double Tree has nicely refurbished rooms with wireless internet for only $75. Plan to spend a night or two.

So please get the word out. We have plenty of tables left for vendors, plenty of Trophy packs starting at only $35, and discounts available for early registration and IPMS membership . This is a chance to catch up with acquaintances.

All of this information and much more can be found at www.ipmstidewater.org/2con_home.htm

Questions - please contact me or the staff direct.

Many thanks,

Charles Landrum

Some sad news

I've just been notified by Frank T. of the passing of Larry Muntner. We don't know much more than Larry passed away about a couple weeks ago from a heart attack. I'm sure I can speak for the club when I say that the members of the BPMS offer the deepest sympathies to Mitchell and their entire family in this time of sorrow. Larry was a good guy who kept good cheer with him in great abundance. We will miss him, and carry his memory in our hearts.

Update: I just spoke to Mitchell. Larry was buried Sunday, August 20th. Mitchell will be sitting shivah until this weekend.
