NYC FLEET WEEK UPDATE!!!

From Michael "Mido"

Thought I would share that Fleet Week NYC is a little bit different this year. Info is not the most clear, but here is what I have found:

1) They are moving the date from the traditional Memorial Day weekend slot to coincide with July 4th. So: July 3rd - 8th

2) It will coincide with Sail4th 250. That means we will have ~30 tall ships from around the world visiting NYC Harbor. Maybe the largest gathering ever!

3) I’ve read somewhere, but hard to verify, that a number of foreign navies will send active ships. Maybe 40!

4) Blue Angels and an airshow(?) will be in the harbor.

Hope more info becomes available soon!

Tour on Saturday, October 25th, at Brooklyn's historic Floyd Bennett Field.

Message from Frank Desisto:

Greetings IPMS Brooklyn!

Some of you guys know me; some do not.
Regardless, yours truly is hosting tour on Saturday, October 25th, at Brooklyn's historic Floyd Bennett Field.
As a National Park Service Volunteer in my 15th year, I sometimes go to the field for various reasons. What may be of interest to modelers is Hanger "B", which houses the HARP (Historic Aircraft Restoration Project) collection. With a few exceptions, most are "warbirds", some of which were previously displayed at the USS Intrepid Museum.
The tour will begin at approximately 0930 (AM to us regular folks) and last for about two hours. This will be followed by a drive-through tour of the field and a possible visit to the Ryan Visitor's Center, housed in the recently restored terminal/control tower.
There are no vendors so if attending, please bring food and beverages. We will chow-down at an outdoor pavilion at the field's nature center.
It is possible that we may also be able to witness flight operations of the NYPD Aviation Unit, which is stationed nearby on the old Coast Guard Air Station, but that is not certain.
Please PM me on my Facebook page if interested, for more details. I do not wish to clog this group with any back-and-forth conversations. As taxpayers it is OUR National Recreation Area, so family and friends are welcome, but no pets. Oh, and BTW, access is free.

Since 1972

In 1972 a group of guys from a local hobby shop decided to start meeting together for their shared interest in models. By May 1973 they were more formally known as THE BROOKLYN PLASTIC MODELERS SOCIETY.

The Brooklyn Plastic Modeler Society is one of the oldest local chapters of the International Plastic Modelers Society and resides in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York. Since our inception we've been bringing a diverse group of modelers with varied tastes together for monthly gathering to discuss the hobby and display our latest works.

Some notable moments in BPMS history include our involvement in bringing the Aircraft Carrier INTREPID to NYC as well as many displays on-board over the years; in October of 1975 we hosted the Big Apple Con and Noreastcon 6 in May, 1977; as well as displays for many events and make-and-takes over the years.

We've also been supporters of Speicher Model Group overseas as well as Wounded Warriors closer to home.

We were named IPMS/USA Region 1’s Club of the Year for two years running – 2023 and 2024.

We currently reside in the Bergen Beach Sports Complex and meet on the third Friday of each month.

BPMS & Fantasy Modeling Magazine

VINTAGE FANTASY MODELING MAGAZINE #4 jy

A blast from the past. This shows you how long age the BPMS was involved in Sci-Fi and Anime models. The magazine was put out by Starlog magazine during the mid 1980's. BPMS member Andy Yahacus was the editor of the magazine. Plus BPMS member Murray Richter built the Bandai 1/60 Zaku II on the cover of issue number one. Magazine only ran 6 issues. (From Jeff E)

Great work! Now the slates are clean and time to start a new year!

HOLIDAY DESSERTS: Thanks to everyone who brought in some goodies, and there was plenty!

HOLIDAY DINNER: The weather was nice and we had an amazing time!

raffle: We had a raffle during the meeting. It’ll probably go the same way for the foreseeable future.

END OF AN ERA: With the close of 2018, so was the completion of the term BPMS President Joe Bergman.  As a president who led from the front, he challenged the group to build more and we surpassed the 300 models barrier in 2018! We thanked Joe for his efforts and presented him with a plaque for his service to the club.

On the agenda: JANUARY

NEW REGIME: We have two new faces in the front of the room this month. Our new President will be Tom Knoll and the Vice President will be Tom Govia! Let’s welcome them to the job with another banner year!

2019 Model Pledge: Looks like we got this working nicely now! Bring in an unbuilt model between January and APRIL 2017 to declare as your pledge model. Please have it finished for OCTOBER 2018, for a display. After October you may bring back your pledge for the November meeting for the last contest of the year. For your efforts you get an additional FIVE Super Raffle tickets for completing your pledge! Sweet! Easy enough!

KIT SALE: Bring kits to sell and cash to buy with. There’s no tab at this bar!
