Welcome to MARCH! To finish up the first quarter on BPMS activities we have:

Decal Swap Night: Bring decals you no longer need to swap or sell with other members. You might find that markings that have been looking for!

Green Model Night: The big holiday for March is St Patrick ’s Day and what better way to observe it than with GREEN MODELS. It’s not a contest simply a theme for models to bring. You are welcome to bring back something old to show the group, or if it ties into the theme in some way, it would be great. Be prepared to tell the group a few words on your models.

Of course, everyone is welcome to bring any other new work that has been completed.

You also still have time to declare your model pledge. Speak with me about it. April is the cut off for declarations and the October is the due date for finished models.

Contest Night: The first installment of the BPMS Annual Contest. This is your first opportunity to gather votes across our various categories. If you brought something to the December theme contest that you would like to bring back, that would be fine, although I am not sure if your Build Like An Eleven Year-Old entry will fare well in this contest...

 

Show Us You Tool! One of our more vulgar sounding yet hugely fun activities. We invite everyone to bring in some tool, product, or process to let the group know about as it might help others.

 Minutes from the September Meeting
Attendance: Members – 20, Guests – 2, Models – 23
Meeting was gaveled to order at 8:00PM.

• Discussion of the upcoming contests, including Penn Con which was occurring the following day.
• Other shows included Armor Con and the HVHMG show. Look for the flyer and categories elsewhere in this issue.
• IPMS Region 1 held a Zoom meeting to discuss current events. Topics including welcoming “new” models – i.e., Gundams etc. And the GSB vs. 123 judging styles.
• The monthly raffle was held with 10 winners!
• October is the time to show your Pledge models, Nominations will also be held, and the theme for the Oct. meeting will be Spooky.
• Discussion also included the Christmas Dinner to be held in early Dec.
• Kevin K gave a short talk on painting 1/35 scale figures for your dioramas. .
• Meeting was adjourned at 9:35PM

 

October Activities!

MODEL PLEDGES: Earlier in the year you should've "pledged" a model to build by the October meeting. Building this model pledge entitles you to a BONUS FIVE SUPER RAFFLE TICKETS! If you finished your pledge earlier in the year and already brought it in, we invite you to bring it back for this meeting. Be sure to mark on your kit slip that this is your Pledge so Bob knows. Thanks!
NOMINATIONS: Usually a regime gets to sit up front for two years, but with COVID we relied on these guys to maintain stability for an extended period of time. Who will be ascending to the desk up front?
SPOOKY MODELS: October is officially the spookiest month, so why not display a spooky model. Will it be a figure of Michael Myers or a Banshee jet, that's up to you to figure out a way to interpret this theme night! ~Bob

03/18/2021 BPMS Zoom mini meeting report

Sixteen people attended the meeting. Two of them were brothers. If you didn't attend, you'll have to guess who they are. One new release was reported, (Ryefield's) Initial Production Tiger 1, with interior. Too many Tigers? Nah, there's always room for more. In progress and completed work included: WW1 cavalrymen, MiG 21 bis, Challenger 2 with enhanced armor and plow, three submarines (Type VII C, Type XXI and Gato Class), Fokker DR-1, Hawker Hurricane, multiple Pz Kw IVs and T 34s (this will be one heck of a wargame table), (Metal Earth) Caboose, Mad Max Interceptor, Ho 229 and two Me 262 variants. Acquisitions include : (Meng) Super Hornet, (Pj Production) pilots with jhmc helmets, (Master Box) zombie hunter and (Academy) PBY 5A. We heard how tail-heavy solid body aircraft can be balanced by drilling out the body and filling the cavities with Liquid Gravity. We saw the new Revell acrylic paint. Actually, we saw the 18 ml container which looks like a tinlet in a box. Expect a review of the paint in a few weeks. However, we did get a detailed review of PanPastel, soft pastels that can be applied like paint or even in place of paint, Gil's Mad Max Interceptor being a case in point. More durable (and more expensive) than chalk pastels, they work well on flat and gloss finishes and come in a number of colors, including metallics. Thanks, Gil. Our next meeting of is 3/25/21 and it marks ONE YEAR of weekly virtual meetings. The first one was 4/2/20. We'll celebrate the anniversary with "Name That Sprue," a memory contest for modelers. 05/20/2020 Mini - Meeting Report

Eighteen people joined last night's meeting. There was talk about the difficulty of getting Zvezda kits, Model Masters paint availability and the status of Wingnut Wings. We continue to work on mastering the shared screen. Some are more successful than others (that's me). Works in progress included aircraft, a cruiser, a sub, and a car. Completed aircraft and sci fi pieces were shown and discussed. We also saw the head of a 7 foot tall Godzilla that was under repair. We're all anxious to see the completed job. The virtual raffle got even more sophisticated, with the random number generator picking both the prize and the prize winner. Thanks again to the members who donated items to the raffle. If you have something to donate, send a photo of the item to Bobby and Jeff. Our next meeting is Thursday, May 28 at 8 pm. Invites to follow. Stay safe.

The January meeting was an impressive way to kick off a new decade with the BPMS. The weather was reasonable for January, so we had 26 members and 3 guests who brought in 20 models for display, and loads up for sale.

January Meeting

NEW MEMBERS: Chuck Contrino and Steven McCole have each attended to three meetings and showed us completed models. We started the New Year off by voting them both in for membership. Welcome to the fold!

2020 Model Pledge: Looks like we got this working nicely now! Bring in an unbuilt model between January and APRIL 2020 to declare as your pledge model. Please have it finished for OCTOBER 2020, for a display. After October you may bring back your pledge for the November meeting for the last contest of the year. For your efforts you get an additional FIVE Super Raffle tickets for completing your pledge! Sweet! Easy enough! We already have about one third of the active members signed up. Won’t you join the fun?

KIT SALE: I think we might’ve had one of the biggest kits sales in a long time. There were tons of kits finding new homes during the meeting. Well done!

raffle: We had another raffle with an impressive assortment of prizes. The club is always looking for donations for these activities.

Contest NIGHT: This is the first quarter of the BPMS Annual contest. Feel free to bring in any model that hasn’t already been in a quarterly contest, and you are encouraged to bring in your entries from the last theme contest!

SHOW US YOUR TOOL: This vulgar sounding activity is more of a simple BPMS tradition. Once a year we ask members to come to the meeting prepared with a tool or method they like to use to make their model building life easier. It could be a new product, something you made yourself, or a different way of tackling a problem. It’s up to you. Please be prepared to tell the group a couple words about what you have. 

raffle: We had a raffle during the meeting. It’ll probably go the same way for the foreseeable future.

EDITORIAL:

THIRTY-ONE YEARS IN THE BPMS

I meant to write this on my thirtieth anniversary, but was overwhelmed. No matter. During the February 1989 Meeting of the BPMS voted in a new member. Introduced to the BPMS by my friend (and next door neighbor) Jeff Eng, it was 17 year old me. A couple years later I was appointed to the job of Treasurer as I was an accounting student at the time. Years later I served four years as club president. After that stint I consolidated the roles of secretary, activities director, and editor of the Bulletin just to make everything easier for timing and sorting out. Been doing that plus some internet presence and social media ever since.

In the thirty-one of my BPMS membership, I have seen the club go through many events. Multiple location moves. Members coming and going. Friends made. Friends lost. 

In 2022, the BPMS will mark 50 years of serving the community. I suspect a celebration will be in order for that one. That aside, in my time I have seen many great things going on at our meetings and  have no doubt that we can expect another 50 years ahead of us. The BPMS has always had the greatest asset of all time, AMAZING MEMBERS. We get together, we get along, and we enjoy our time in the hobby. That’s the secret of our longevity. By my reckoning there will always be a BPMS long after we are all gone to carry on the tradition of friendly inclusiveness and never forgetting to enjoy our hobby. Cheers to the future of the BPMS!

The End of Modeling Videos on You Tube? by Kevin K

The back story all started when the FTC informed You Tube (YT)(Google) that they were in violation of COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) by collecting data from kids (13 and under) and the algorithm directing ads at them.   You Tube remedy was to not allow kids under 13 from having a YT account. So what happened? They lied on the form and said they were over 13 and/or asked their parents can they watch videos through their accounts.

Children's advocacy groups felt the rules didn't go far enough and the FTC sued YT for $175 million!With that they created another rule putting all the liability on the video creators saying they need to mark their videos that are directed at children as such. when the creators do this they lose out on a percentage of the ad revenue, as well as other perks to grow the channel.

YT went through all the videos on the platform and marked the ones that were child directed or child attractive. But were very vague on what it all meant. When asked, YT told the creators to consult an attorney. But that's not the end, starting Jan. 2020, the FTC will go thru the videos. Some bureaucrat in DC will look for videos that have been mis-marked and can fine the creator up to $42,000 per video! 

The creator who's video I watched - Andy's Hobby HQ - says that the age analytics of his videos falls between the high teens and 65 years old... No kids.  It isn't the 60s were models were an interest of kids. But some pencil pusher in DC can look at one of his videos and think "Oh scale models... they're toys... toys for kids."  And hand down a the fine.  Andy says he has a few hundred model videos. That's a lot of $$. 

Even tho not all video creators are in the US, they must abide by these rules, and those that say no will simply get their channels turned off.  Many of the creators these days use making videos as their livelihood. Many creators are simply afraid and sadly willing to walk away from their channel  leaving us with any of the content we like to watch - model building and painting.

Now the FTC says it's will listen to the public, so we need people to sign the petition and write or email the FTC politely. There is a link below of talking points to be mentioned.

October meeting was another busy meeting. We had 26 members and 2 guests who brought in 13 models, most of which were pledges. 

October Meeting 

NOMINATIONS: President Tom Knoll and Vice-Prez Tom Govia are only one year into their terms. They aren’t getting away that easily! They won an unopposed election for a second year up front. Congrats guys! 

MODEL PLEDGES: Thirteen members had their pledges ready for display and discussion at the meeting. Everyone who came in with a completed pledge will have an additional FIVE tickets for the November Super Raffle!

Super Raffle: This is the reason why you must fill out your paperwork at each meeting. For every new model you brought in over the course of the year you get ONE SUPER RAFFLE TICKET. If you completed your pledge model you get an additional FIVE super raffle tickets. You cannot buy tickets for this raffle. You must earn them! The more you built the more tixx you get. We’ve been buying items for the Super Raffle all year, but if you would like to donate anything, feel free to do so! [Thanks in advance!] Who built the most in 2019? I’ll announce the name at the meeting.
