February brought us our first quarterly contest of 2015! We had 25 members and zero guests who brought in 25 models, 21 of which were contest entries.

February Meeting

Contest NIGHT: We had our first installment of the BPMS Quarterly Contest. We had a nice showing of models on the tables. 

Model Ship: Charlie Nelson told us about the 1/700 Graf Spee he built, complete with rigging, rails and wooden deck.  

SHOW US YOUR TOOL: Some members brought in some tools to tell the group about. Each year we see some new ideas.  

2015 Model Pledge: We already had a bunch of models pledged. You have until April to make your declaration.

Future Themes: We chose a theme for June, MODELING WITH THE STARS, details on the final page of the Bulletin. We were trying to iron out the December theme as well. One idea we had from Joe and Russ was called BPMS Roulette. Each member who wants to participate would be required to bring in a model to throw in. You will get some other model. It will automatically become your 2015 Model Pledge, and you only have to get it most of the way along by October to get the pledge bonus of FIVE super raffle tickets. Then finish it off by December for the contest. The other idea was from Jeff and Jimmy, European Tour Eastern Front, starting from the Battle of Stalingrad until the end of the war. Basically the other side of the war that we just had a theme for, but very timely, as 2015 marks 70 years since the end.  We’ll discuss this more at the next meeting. Another concept that was brought up was New Kid On the Block. Everyone has been getting kits from the new manufacturers, but is anyone building them? This theme is all about building a model from a young company.  I also heard from Hugh who is interested in sponsoring a theme in absentia called Things That Aren't There, eg: A plane lost in the Bermuda triangle, the headless horseman, the House of Representatives on a Friday… 

raffle: We had a raffle with eight items. If we have time, we should have another one in March.

DECAL SWAP NIGHT: Bring in decals to swap or sell. You might want to bring some cash. You never know when that sheet you were looking for might show up.

Oldest model: Every one of us has some golden oldies in the stacks of models. Please select an old kit to show the group, built or unbuilt to tell the group a couple words about.   

2015 Model Pledge: A new year means new pledges. Bring in an unbuilt model between January and APRIL 2015 to declare as your pledge model. Please have it finished for OCTOBER 2015, for a display. After October you may bring back your pledge for the November meeting for the last contest of the year. For your efforts you get an additional FIVE Super Raffle tickets for completing your pledge! Sweet! Easy enough!

May was another light meeting. Due to harsh weather predictions, we had merely 21 members and no guests who brought in 15 models.

May Meeting

SECOND QUARTER CONTEST: Time flies! We had an assortment of entries on the tables across the various categories. Each entrant told us a few words about their entries. With the light numbers it was an ideal time to rack up some votes! Who will be the first winner of the FRANK TRIPOLI AWARD? We’ll find out in December.

Parts Box: Spare parts were shared with the group. Your scrap might be gold to someone else!

NOREASTCON: The group discussed the show.

RAFFLE: We had a monthly raffle with an assortment of items. We’ll probably have one in JUNE depending on time.

TROOP SUPPORT: With Hugh in retirement Jimmy volunteered to take over the role as Wounded Warrior Project liaison. He’s gotten reports regarding what models and supplies would be most useful. He was recently advised of a hub to ship to closer to home, so that’s good. As always, donations of any models and supplies are welcome.

ASIAN INVASION THEME CONTEST: IT’S FINALLY HERE! I hope you have all been building for this contest because the sponsors have some gorgeous awards ready for this one. Contest details HERE.

BAR-BE-QUE NIGHT: It’s suppertime! What says summer more than a b-b-q? The BPMS will be holding it’s annual BBQ during the June Meeting. The cost will be $8-10 per person. If you want to donate and food, trimmings, sides, desserts, etc, please feel free to do so but we only ask that you bring enough for everyone.

March was a busy meeting. We had 25 members and no guests who brought in only 13 models. Come on! Let’s build! Let's get those numbers UP!

March Meeting

WOUNDED WARRIORS: Jimmy provided us with an update on the new location we’ve been shipping to and what they are looking for. They have supplies but NON-military subjects would be greatly appreciated.

FAV MODEL: We all have a favorite model. The group brought in their favorite models, or at least their favorite at that point in time, and told us a little bit about them.

DECAL SWAP NIGHT: I think guys brought in decals to swap and sell. I didn’t make note of it. Oops.

TROPHIES: We voted to sponsor a trophy package for the NOREASTCON as we will have a group heading out to Long Island for the show.  We selected categories that Frank Tripoli would’ve built for.

February felt like a strangely light meeting, yet we had better numbers than January. We had 23 members and no guests who brought in 26 models for the first contest of 2014.

February Meeting

WOUNDED WARRIORS: We already got a confirmation for the donation that the club made in the name of Frank Tripoli.

Contest NIGHT: This was the first quarter of the BPMS Annual contest. We had an impressive display of talent on the tables. We’d love to see more for the second quarter.

SHOW US YOUR TOOL: This vulgar sounding activity is more of a simple BPMS tradition. Once a year we ask members to come to the meeting prepared with a tool or method they like to use to make their model building life easier. We only had a hand full of members who remembered to bring in items, but it was useful nonetheless. 

Model Talk: Each member told us a couple words about the models that were brought in.

January was an emotional meeting. We had 22 members and no guests who brought in 12 models for the first meeting of 2014.

January Meeting

FRANK TRIPOLI: Frank passed away on New Year’s Eve. He was an all around great guy. He was a wise and patient voice that helped guide the BPMS over many years. So how could we ever possibly repay all his kindness?

To start, we raised $250 for the Wounded Warriors Project in the memory of Frank Tripoli. That’s a really nice acknowledgement of what he meant to us. Thanks!

We voted to rename the annual award for receiving the most votes in the annual contest from Top Gun, to The Frank Tripoli Award.

At the end of the meeting Russ Holcomb volunteered to assume Frank’s old post of Membership Director.

I don’t think we can ever get back to business as usual without Frank’s kind words, but it’s reassuring that we moved quickly to make sure that the club properly remembered one the greatest members we had ever known.

Other Member news: Long time member Phil Benson announced that he’s moving to New Jersey.  James Maroney recently moved to Suffolk County. Bob Alforse (spelling?) passed away in May, 2013.

Model Talk: Each member told us a couple words about the model that were brought in.

November was a jam-packed meeting full of stuff to do. We had 23 members and 1 guest who brought in a dozen models most of which were contest entries.

November Meeting

COntest night – 4^th qtr 2013: This was the final installment of the quarterly BPMS Annual Contest. Another year in the books.   

super raffle: This is the reason why you must fill out your paperwork at each meeting. For every new model you brought in over the course of the year you get ONE SUPER RAFFLE TICKET. We had 246 raffle tickets out there that night. Phil Benson was top guy with 23 for the year, followed closely by Joe Bergman. We had nearly 100 raffle items so the chance of winning something was pretty high.  

Holiday Dinner: At the time that this is being written, the dinner had not yet occurred, but if history is any indicator, it was probably a good time! This year we met at NORA’S PARK BENCH CAFÉ in Brooklyn on December 14^th -- TOMORROW!

BPMS Bulletin: November 2013

THE  MINUTES

October was a meeting under a hunter’s moon. We had 27 members and 1 guest who brought in 10 models most of which were pledges.

October Meeting

2013 Model Pledge: Not a bad showing. About a half dozen members brought in their completed model pledges and told us about the builds. I think some of the more notable works were Charlie’s paper model ship, HMS Badsworth, Phil’s ’34 Duezie, Russ’ use of magnets with his Cutlass and Kamila’s Statue of Liberty that lit up!

NOMINATIONS: Ray and Gordon have only had their posts for a year. They were elected to another year, per BPMS tradition.  

HOLIDAY DINNER: After the way I dropped the ball in September several members stepped up with various options where we could go. Thanks to you all for your effort. We had to quickly boil it down to two choices and went with:

Trophy package: We sponsored a trophy package for the HVHMG 2013 Show, The Cold War, which was on October 19.

If you completed your pledge model you get an additional FIVE super raffle tickets. You cannot buy tickets for this raffle. You must earn them! The more you built, the more tixx you get. We’ve been buying items for the Super Raffle all year, but if you would like to donate anything, feel free to do so! Who built the most in 2013? I’ll announce the name at the meeting.
