Discussion Topic: Scribing, and dealing with mistakes

 

The sixteen people in attendance heard Mark confirm that BPMS was the IPMS Region 1 Chapter of the Year for the third year in a row, something no other chapter has done, to the best of his knowledge. More good news, our own Julio L was named Region 1 Member of the Year. Congratulations all around.

Several BPMS members were among the 60 or so modelers at last Saturday's Japan Village group build. Photos are on the BPMS Facebook page. 

Replicon is Saturday, March 28 at the Freeport Recreation Center in Long Island and ValleyCon is Sunday, March 29 in Chicopee, MA. Whichever one you attend, take photos for the people stuck at home. 

Lou reports Border Models' 1/35 He-111 and Dragon's 1/48 Bf-109 E4 are available. Not surprisingly, Jimmy has already acquired the 109 and he gave us an impromptu in box review - 3D printed engine (with piping and wiring), single piece rear fuselage, different colored sprue. It comes in a plastic box with a cardboard sleeve, in case you're interested. 

We saw Vaughn's F-105, Kevin's Gamora and Medusa busts (Medusa is mounted on a wedding cake pillar), Mark's Goliath (he tried AK quick gen paint for the figures) and Porsche 935 (he stripped the wrinkled paint from the body by soaking it in isopropyl alcohol), Angelo's World War Toons Panther and Egg Plane Osprey, Russ' Huey Cobra and Vigilante and Gil's 3D printed RDA Helicopter (from Avatar). An Ornithopter (from Dune) and VMFA 232 decals were also acquired. 

This week's tool was from Amazon, not the Dollar Store. It's a set of flexible metal scribing templates from Hasegawa. Very useful for scribing geometric shapes.

We use various tools for scribing: the back of a hobby blade (#11or #12 or #22), a model company's scriber (like Tamiya's), a model tool company's scriber (too many to name), an awl, a wood chisel (for larger scale models), carbide scriber, old dental tools, and micro saws.  "Official" scribing guide tape is available but label maker tape, flexible rulers, and masking tape work too. Kevin has used a coat of UV curing resin to fix scribing mistakes, and Michael C used a thin layer of Nara air hardening clay (available at Hobby Lobby), to fix mistakes. Just remember to sand it before painting. Simon has used Mr. Surfacer 1000 and Tamiya's Surface Primer. Even though we use different tools and different techniques everyone agrees the key to successful scribing is to work slowly and carefully.

 Remembering Don: Longtime member Don Illjes passed away in July. We would like to mark the occasion to ask for members to bring things to tell the group about that relate to memories of Don.  

 Holiday Dinner: Since the last meeting members have been contacting various venues regarding party menus. We MUST nail down a decision at this meeting so we can make arrangements. 

I am sure we will also discuss the latest IPMS News as I will be participating in the Region One Zoom the night before the meeting.

Tuesday, May 3, 2022 BPMS Zoom Mini Meeting Report

Fourteen people attended the meeting. The next in person meeting will be Friday May 20, 2022 at the John Malone Community Center, 2303 Bergen Ave, Brooklyn where we'll have our first Quarterly Contest. In case you forgot, the categories are: aircraft, armor, ships, figures, sci-fi and miscellaneous. In case you forgot how to vote, Bobby will explain how to mark your ballot, a longstanding BPMS tradition. Mark shared photos of Noreast Con. There were over 500 entries. In industry news, Lou reports Tamiya's 1/35 KV 2 is available and Kevin told us Micro Mir's 1/35 CSS David is also available. The price of Testors paint will go up by 46% on May 15. You may want to stock up now. In-progress and completed work included: Panzer 4 G, RAH 66 Comanche, Spitfire (with Micro Krystal Klear camera window), Corsair, Bristol 175, Chevy Nova (with nail polish paint job), A-10, Fw-500, Roman Warship and F-84G (more on that later). Acquisitions included: NIAI-1 Fanera 2 (Mr. K is not a fan of this kit) and Speedpaint set from The Army Painter (Kevin's detailed write up will appear in the next Bulletin - watch your mailbox). Instead of introducing us to a new tool, Gil told us about Stynylrez, a water based acrylic polyurethane paint. The paint is temperature sensitive. Don't schedule a delivery if it's winter anywhere along the supply chain (ask Kevin). No featured topic to discuss this week and we still didn't have enough time for Frank to explain why his F-84 G had US, not Taiwanese, markings. He'll have another chance at our next meeting on 5/10/22 at 7:30 pm. Invites to follow. Hope to see you there.

IPMS Region 1 Update

Good evening chapter contacts,

First let me place my IPMS RC hat on, hope all of you are still safe and healthy and building some models. Not much to report except that the national convention is still on as I send out this email I just check their website. I know that they have not received a a lot of sponsors so please consider sponsoring a category.

Now changing hats and putting on my Noreastcon Chairmen hat. As I write this the show is still on the committee is planning on getting together early in July and see were we go. I'm asking that all of you check with your chapters and see if there is still an interest in coming to the event. I have a couple of concerns one being if we require masks and social distancing when we judge the contest how is that going to work. So please discuss with your clubs and get back to me maybe with a head count so I can let our committee know.

The January meeting was an impressive way to kick off a new year with the BPMS. The weather was warm for January, so we had 25 members and two guests who brought in 30 models for display, and plenty up for sale. 

January Meeting 

NEW REGIME: Our new Prez Joe Bergman and Veep Bob Epley presided over a very organized meeting for their first time up at bat. Well done, gents! 

2017 Model Pledge: Looks like we got this working nicely now! Bring in an unbuilt model between January and APRIL 2017 to declare as your pledge model. Please have it finished for OCTOBER 2017, for a display. After October you may bring back your pledge for the November meeting for the last contest of the year. For your efforts you get an additional FIVE Super Raffle tickets for completing your pledge! Sweet! Easy enough! We already have about one third of the active members signed up. Won’t you join the fun? 

KIT SALE: I think we might’ve had one of the biggest kits sales in a long time. There were tons of kits finding new homes during the meeting. Well done! 

MAY MEETING CONFLICT: There will be an issue with our meeting place in May. We can have the BBSC any night EXCEPT our usual night. Please have a look at your schedule so we can choose a different night for that month. 

JUNE THEME: While the group was mulling over ideas for the June Theme contest, Vinny Rosati and your humble narrator swooped in to sponsor STAR WARS theme contest. We have had theme science fiction theme contests in the past, but never one this specific. More details HERE. 

TROPHY PACKAGE: The group voted to sponsor a trophy package for the LISMS show REPLICON 28, Saturday, March 25, 2017. More details HERE.

RAFFLE: We had another raffle with an impressive assortment of prizes. The club is always looking for donations for these activities. 

On the agenda: FEBRUARY 

CONTEST NIGHT: This is the first quarter of the BPMS Annual contest. Feel free to bring in any model that hasn’t already been in a quarterly contest, and you are encouraged to bring in your entries from the last theme contest! 

SHOW US YOUR TOOL: This vulgar sounding activity is more of a simple BPMS tradition. Once a year we ask members to come to the meeting prepared with a tool or method they like to use to make their model building life easier. It could be a new product, something you made yourself, or a different way of tackling a problem. It’s up to you. Please be prepared to tell the group a couple words about what you have.

APRIL was another light month, or so I’m told. We had 19 members and no guests who brought in 11 models plus five more works in progress.

Noreastcon: The IPMS regional show was a topic of discussion.

Lights, Camera, Action Part II: Jeff continued testing and found a good combination to throw some light on the situation. Tom also suggested some PVC leg extensions for the tables to improve viewing pleasure. Thank you for your efforts, gentlemen!

Raffle: We had a raffle with a fine assortment of kits. We’ll likely be having monthly raffles for the foreseeable future.

CONTEST NIGHT-2Q15: Where has the time gone? We’re already up to our second quarterly installment of the annual contest. Bring in your good work to rack up some votes!

A correction to the travel estimate I provided at the July meeting - Google Maps indicates a driving time of 3 hours and 40 minutes from Bergen Beach. [I had added the time it takes me to drive from the meeting site to my house west of Philadelphia (about 3 hours) and from my house to Mechanicsburg, PA (the previous contest location) (about 2 hours). If you go directly on I-78, you save an hour and change.]

Central PA is beautiful in the fall and Gettysburg is less than an hour from Carlisle if a weekend road trip appeals to you.

April was another great meeting. We had 29 members and 0 guests who brought in 31 models, of which 14 were WIPs, to share with the group.

April Meeting

LIGHTING UP MODELS CLINIC: Hosted by Joe Bergman and President Don Illjes, we were in for a treat! These two gents filled us in on the world of Light Emitting Diodes, and some very smart ways to make your models more fun to the beholder, but not breaking the bank in the process. Thanks guys!

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT: Members came in with some 14 WIPs. We got to see some nice work in various stages of completion. The members told us a few words about their work. If you listened, there were some pearls of wisdom shared!

TROPHY PACKAGES: We voted to sponsor trophy packages for this year’s Noreastcon and Nationals.

40TH ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON: Were you there? We had about 28 members and loved ones together at The 56th Fighter Group on Saturday, April 28. Fine food, good friends, and a perfect backdrop meant we had an amazing time. Thanks to all the members who helped out with the set-up, and arrangements. Thanks to those who were able to send us on short trips down memory lane. Of course, thanks to all the members and their better halves who came to share this special occasion. The next thought is, why do we wait ten years to have these?

Again, thank you to everyone involved in the big day!

T H E  M I N U T E S

April kept the ball rolling for 2010. We had 27 members who brought in 18 models of which 14 were WIPs. More on that below.

April Meeting

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT: Several members brought in what they were working on. We had 14 works in progress and of those 5 were part of our model pledge program. The members each took a couple minutes to discuss what they were working on and their methods.

BASIC SKILLS CLINIC: Charlie Nelson, Frank Colucci and your humble narrator each took turns discussing how we get started on a model project. The areas covered were basic tools, supplies, and methods. Even the veterans of the hobby could’ve learned a couple tips and tricks since everyone has a different way of handling things.

A NEWS BRIEF: The Aberdeen Proving Grounds will be closing down in 2012 and will be moved to Ft. Lee.

40 YEARS OF THE BPMS: I brought up at the meeting that 2010 will mark the 40th Anniversary of the BPMS. We started an exchange on how we should observe this milestone. A dinner is certainly in order. Maybe we should figure out a way to tie in a theme contest. Ideas? Let the officers know!

CONTEST NIGHT 2ND QTR 2010: This is the second installment of the Quarterly BPMS Annual Contest. That means that any model that you haven’t brought in for a BPMS Quarterly contest is able to compete. Don’t forget to place a contest entry form for each model, and don’t forget to vote!

PARTS BOX NIGHT: Technically, every meeting since Gordon started bringing in the parts bin has been a Parts Box Night, but this month we’re making it more formal. Bring in extra parts you have laying around, or models you’ve scrapped and lay them out for other members to have a grab at. And keep your eyes peeled, that missing part you’ve been looking for might be out there. If you don’t feel like dragging your spare parts back home, feel free to leave them in the parts bin.

T-SHIRTS: The first wave of shirts arrived last month. The BPMS blue and white never looked better! Our t-shirt artist came up with another concept that we’re taking orders for now too. Ask about it at the meeting. Approx. $11 a pop.

TAKE A PART / LEAVE A PART: Gordon will bring in a big basin monthly for “Take a Part / Leave a Part.” Please feel free to toss your spares into the big bin too! Gordon will bring the club parts box back for each meeting for members to add or take away from. This is something we can all benefit from!

GENERATING MONEY: The club will continue to sell magnets and patches and run raffles and to generate some extra money. The reserves for raffles are hitting rock bottom, any donations of recent models would be greatly appreciated! Can we count on you to help fund various activities and sponsorships?

Don't forget, the NAVAL AVIATION TTHEME CONTEST will be in JUNE!!!!

 Our next meeting will be on May 21, 2010.

Region 1 Update 4-10-09

Hi gang,

Happy Easter and Good Friday, and happy Passover!! I hope you enjoy your secular holiday of choice!! Spring is definitely in the air, and the spring contest season is well underway. I managed to get to RepLIcon and Mosquitocon in the past few weeks, and it was great to get out and see everyone at those events. Both shows were excellent and I had a good time at each. There were some unbelievably great models on the tables which I know we'll see more of them at some of the next shows coming up.

Noreastcon is in a few weeks, and the Buffcon boys are putting the finishing touches on what will be another grand event. Bob and the guys are asking everyone attending the banquet this year to wear a gaudy Hawaiian shirt in memory of Mike Miodonski. Bob also tells me there are a few sponsorships left, so you folks that haven't done so may still do the right thing. There will be no business meeting this year, as I won't be there, but Doc Wiseman has agreed to back me up at the banquet.

I'll be out of town between 16 and 26 April. My checking e mail while away is in severe doubt, so if you send me anything, there's a good chance I may not see it until I return. Rest assured, I'll look at everything when I get back, and will follow up with you then.

This year sees another IPMS election cycle. There will be an election of e board officers, and for amendments to the C&BL's. There are multiple candidates running for some offices, as well as an important amendment regarding foreign nationals and their standing in IPMS/USA. I won't use these Updates to campaign for any particular candidate, or take a position on the amendments, but will ask ALL IPMS members in Region 1 to vote. That is very important to our Society that every member take a few minutes and vote. Vote early and often!!

The word on the streets is that I'm the only candidate for the office of DLC, so my resignation as RC is moving to the front burner. As I don't officially take the DLC seat until after the first of the new year, that gives everyone a chance to take part in the search for my replacement. Attached is a time line drawn up by Dick Montgomery for anyone who would consider taking over this job. It gives everyone ample time to react and is a transparent process designed to give anyone wishing to be RC a standardized procedure to be considered for it. Please look it over carefully, and share it with the officers and members of your chapter. If anyone has any questions, please contact either Dick or myself. Anyone interested is urged to contact Dick at DLC@ipmsusa.org and let their intentions be known. Dick will be handling the search as the current DLC, but I will have some input during the process because I'll be working with them.

Speaking of Dick, here are a few things he's asked me to pass along.

There are now two maps that everyone may find helpful and interesting. Both are based in Goggle Earth, with one showing the position of every chapter in IPMS in every part of the country. It's really helpful if your traveling and want to see of there's a chapter or contest near where you'll be. The maps are found at:
