Reminder BPMS 9/22/26 Zoom Mini-meeting featured topic - the dark side

Last time, it was the joy of building models. This time, it's what gets you frustrated. For instance, have you ever built a model so bad that it wound up in the trash?

Goodbye and Hello - a New Model Co.


Dragon Models is gone! Believe is or not... the long time staple in our hobby is no more! Dragon has sold all of their tooling and molds to Zimi Model, who is in the process of rebranding everything to DRAMi Model...

DRAMi Models is the brand owned by Zimi Model who now owns all of the Dragon Models. With the Dragon brand now officially discontinued, DRAMi has wasted no time in getting kits ready to re-release under the new brand.
Look for kits starting to appear in the 4th Quarter.

BPMS Zoom Mini Meeting: September 8, 2026

An amazing picture to you and me, but just another day at the office for Vaughn. More on that later. 

Fifteen people attended. No Tuesday Zoom meeting next week, the in-person meeting is Friday, 9/18/26, at the Community Center in Brooklyn. Doors open around 5pm and the meeting starts around 7:30. It's kit swap/buy night and the long-awaited large model display. Completed builds or works in progress, it doesn't matter, as long as it's large. 

Lou reports Hobby Boss's 1/48 Argentine A-4 P is available. This led to a discussion on books about the Falklands/Malvinas war and the equipment used in the fighting. 

Bobby shared photos of last Saturday's group build at Pier 57. Several club members were among the thirty or so people at the event. A visitor stopped by and donated four kits. Who says New Yorkers aren't friendly? 

Now, back to the Skycrane photo. It came from the internet, but Vaughn shared one of his own, along with a story of being on the Skycrane as flew to see if premanufactured structures could be safely delivered by air. 

We saw Keith's 3D printed Big Dog Chopper, John's Panzer 1B, Erasmo's A-7, Kevin's Flash Gordon figure and Inga (from Young Frankenstein), Vaughn's scratch-built A5 Vigilante weapons bay and exhaust, Gordon's RGC 80 GM Cannon, Frank's C-5 and Russ' Starship Enterprise and Jagdpanther. Acquisitions included: 1/16 T-34, Sea Vixen FAW2 Strike Fighter, Super Etendard, Me-262 A-a1 and NATO Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle. 

This week's tool was a magnetic hook. Gil likes them for keeping his go-to tools handy and visible, rather than buried in a drawer somewhere. 

The topic was enjoyment so here, in no particular order, are aspects of the hobby that we enjoy most. The freedom to build whatever type of model you want. The camaraderie and friendships among people with shared interests. Assembly, especially when it comes out the way you intended. An opportunity to de-stress. A chance to go back to your youth when you build a kit you had as a kid. Being able to put something down for a while and pick up where you left off. A chance to experiment with different materials and techniques. Tinkering. Painting. The challenge of making a kit unique, better. Creating a museum of obscure aircraft. Collecting kits, reference material, and aftermarket items. Finding out why the prototypes were designed the way they were. The quest for a special kit, decal, or reference. That's some of what we enjoy, in two weeks we talk about what we don't. 

The next meeting is Friday, 9/18/26 at the Community Center. No invite needed. Hope to see you there. Hope to see that 1/16 T-34, too!

BPMS Inhouse Meeting: September 18, 2026

Swap Night – Bring in models to swap or sell. You might want to bring some cash in case someone brings in that kit you’ve been looking for!

Large Model Theme Night - Jimmy made the suggestion, so we are bringing in LARGE MODELS to display. Even if it’s a WIP, we’d be happy to see it for the display.

BPMS Poker Chips – President Kevin got us a supply of BPMS Poker chips to give out at shows. If you are planning on going to a show, please see the officers so we can give you some chips to place with exceptional work.

BPMS Stickers – We made up some really nice looking club logo stickers and they will be up for sale starting this month.

BPMS ZOOM Mini Meeting: September 1, 2026

Twelve people attended. Among them was John V, a modeler I met at the IPMS Nationals. Talk about your small world; Lou and Simon remembered John from the time he lived in New York, back in the late 80's, buying stuff from Ace Hobbies and going to IPMS meetings in New Jersey. Welcome back, John, even if it's only virtual.

Jimmy was glad to see that Takom is coming out with the new 1/35 M-113 and M-577 A1 kits.

There's a group build this Saturday, 9/5/26, at Pier 57 in the Seahorse classroom from 1 - 6pm. Pier 57 is In Manhattan on 11th Ave near W15 St. See the BPMS Facebook page for details.

The meeting started with a spontaneous discussion on the pros and cons of using the CVM-22B Osprey for carrier onboard delivery. A little later, we learned about heavy lift helicopter development with a focus on the Skycrane. Could it be we haven't gotten over the June Theme contest yet?

We saw Vaughan's reworked Monogram Vigilante (with scratch-built bomb bay, and 3D printed replacement engine nozzles) and recently completed Skycrane (a fun build provided you pay close attention to the instructions), Lee's 3D printed Alan Shepard figure (w/ Lunar golf equipment), Kevin's Inga (from Young Frankenstein), Simon's CR-42 and Saab J-21, Gil's 3 D printed Woman with cigarette, Frank C's English Electric Lightning and C-5, and Michael C's 3 D printed 1/44 (not 1/144) ATAT. Michael used Artist's Loft modeling paste, a water-based product he calls "very forgiving" to cover the prominent grow lines rather than sand them down. Bobby thinks Hobbico Hobbylite Filler would also work. Gil likes Duplicolor Sandable Primer for covering grow lines, and Kevin uses UV curing resin.

Gil's tool of the week was a food tray. He likes them for preventing runaway parts, organizing tools, paint container, etc. and keeping things tidy. You may remember that Bobby once told us how Joe Turner would glue wet and dry sandpaper to a food tray and fill it with water so he could sand large items without making a mess.

The topic was symmetry. When Vaughn can't trust his eyes during assembly, he builds a cardboard jig. Jimmy found an aftermarket jig for lining up F-18 tail fins. Michel finds a bow compass is good for replicating precise measurements. Simon pointed out that decals can be stressful so, when there are no surface features to use as references, wrap a strip of tape around the fuselage, or turret or whatever and use that. Kevin keeps a mirror handy to check his work for symmetry. Kevin also had this advice for painting eyes. If you're right-handed, paint the left eye first. And it's easier when the eyes look to the side rather than straight ahead.

IPMS/ USA Forums Closing Down

The IPMS/USA Executive Board has decided to close the Forums during the July 20th, 2026 EBoard meeting.  The Forums will be disabled on September 14, 2026, please wrap up any personal messages or discussions before that date.
