THE MINUTES
by Bobby P.
April was another great meeting with a turnout of 23 members, 2 guests bringing in 14+ models and WIPs for display.

APRIL MEETING!!!

SWAP MEET: Stuff was bought and sold, as it should be at a swap meet. Many members participated.

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT / FAVORITE MODEL: We had an entire table dedicated for this activity. My notes said that there were 7 WIPs on the table, but there had to be more than that. Each person spoke a few words about his WIP or his fav model. A lot of fun.

You can see pics from each meeting on Gordon’s blog:
http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/

On the agenda: May
PARTS BOX NIGHT:
Just how it sounds, Parts Box, bring in those spare parts that you don’t think you’ll need to share with the guys at the club. Guys part with some interesting pieces during this activity.

PHIFTY YEARS OF PHABULOUS PHANTOMS: We’re observing the fiftieth birthday of one of the most versatile and formidable jets ever built: The F-4 Phantom. Chances are you have a Phantom somewhere in your collection. Please dig out your Phantoms to bring in for this theme night!

CONTEST NIGHT 2Q08: This will be the second installment of the BPMS Annual contest. You know, the quarterly one that you put your work on the table and the members place their votes for their favorites. Those ballots will be combined with the votes of the other quarterly contests for the end of the year.

REGARDING PHOTO ROSTER STATUS: Hugh sent me a series of emails with the finished product. Let’s see if I can get it into the upcoming bulletins. Since it’s over six pages, I will, likely, be including one page per month, so you will have to save at least one page from the bulletin each month if you want to have the complete roster.
Our next meeting will be on May 16, 2008.

Pics from the April Meeting

Hi everyone! My apologies for this month's photos. If you have not realized it yet, the photos are not up to my standards and somewhat horrible due to the fact that I was using a new camera. I believe I finally work out all the kinks and next meetings photos should be back to a higher quality.

March was another great meeting with a turnout of 29 members, 2 guests bringing in 20 models for display and the contest

MARCH MEETING!!!

DECAL SWAP NIGHT: It was more like a general swap night with all the goodies up for sale on the tables. Some guys unloaded some stuff, and others were happy to buy it. A happy compromise!

A NIGHT OF PANEL LINES: The first “panel discussion” of the year turned out awesome. Charlie and Hugh did an amazing job of describing their methods for doing panel lines on aircraft. It was a very educational clinic. Gordon has some pics and Hugh’s PowerPoint Presentation in his blog.

You can see pics from each meeting on Gordon’s blog:
http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/

On the agenda: April
SWAP MEET: Just how it sounds, Swap Meet, bring in goodies to trade or sell. Bring some money, you never know when someone will be dumping that kit you’ve been looking for!

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT / FAVORITE MODEL: What are you working on? What’s on the workbench? What model do you really love? Built or Unbuilt? Grab something and bring it in and be prepared to tell the group a couple words about it. Both of these activities are fun on their own, but combined we should have a great time!

February was another great meeting with a turnout of 26 members, one guest bringing in 23 models for display and the contest

FEBRUARY MEETING!!!

SHOW US YOUR TOOL: For the first time ever this activity was a bust. I guess we didn’t publicize it enough. Perhaps we’ll schedule another one for later in the year.

CONTEST NIGHT 1Q08: We had the first installment of the annual contest. There were some great entries on the tables. The race is on!

You can see pics from each meeting on Gordon’s blog:
http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/
On the agenda: March
DECAL SWAP NIGHT: Just how it sounds, Decal Swap Night, bring in decals to trade or sell. Bring some money, you never know when someone will be dumping those markings you’ve been looking for!

A NIGHT OF PANEL LINES: This will be the first “panel discussion” of the year. Our subject will be Panel Lines. Hosted by Hugh, Charlie, Jimmy and your humble narrator, we hope to present the group with some information that they might not have known previously, or maybe a useful perspective. We are also asking every member to bring in finished models from their collection that show examples of panel lines so we can make this an overall theme for the night. If anyone would like to kick in a couple words, feel free to do so!

The march meeting will be held on

January set the pace for another year as the current regime started their second year in service. The first meeting of 2008 had a great turnout of 28 members, one guest and 27 models on the tables. We had a lukewarm showing for the Model of the Year Contest.

JANUARY MEETING!!!
MODEL OF THE YEAR: It was the final throw-down for category supremacy in 2007. The turnout for the contest was light again this year. The awards will be presented during the February meeting.

ACTIVITIES: President Jimmy decided it was time for some discussions groups, as we kept it light last year. So here’s what we have coming up: March: Panel Lines hosted by Hugh, Charlie, Jimmy and your humble narrator. April: Metal Finishes, panel to be determined. August: Resin Casting hosted by Matt. If you would like to organize a panel, join one, or have in idea for any activity, feel free to contact any of the officers.

You can see pics from each meeting on Gordon’s blog:

On the agenda: February
SHOW US YOUR TOOL: I know it sounds terrible, but it really isn’t. Bring in some tools or other goodies that you use when building a model. It can be only sort of odd or end, eg: a cement, a process you use, or some method, and be prepared to tell us a couple words about it.

CONTEST NIGHT 1Q08: This will be the first installment of the annual contest. You are permitted to bring models from the “We Mean Business” Theme contest provided they haven’t been in a previous annual contest. Don’t forget to put your models in the right sections and have all your paperwork filled out. Without a contest form you won’t get any votes, period!

Theme Alert: WARSAW PACT
Heads up! The next theme contest will be THE WARSAW PACT!!! Get your Soviet kits out of the closet and build them. The sponsors will have some strict guidelines for this theme contest. This will be for the June meeting. And now a word from our sponsors:

WARSAW PACT THEME CONTEST
DATE: JUNE 20, 2008

The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance of socialist states in Central and East Europe. The Warsaw Pact served to counter the potential threat from the NATO alliance. The Alliance began on May 14, 1955 and ended July 1, 1991. The members of the alliance were Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and the Soviet Union.

The Theme Contest is the Warsaw Pact 1955 to 1991. You can build kits from any of the Warsaw Pact members, used in that time period. You can build armor, vehicles, ships, figures, aircraft, helicopters, or anything you can come up with. All we ask is that all entries should be new built kits. Any old off the shelf models should be display only.

Bf 109 Q&A / Aeroplane Books

From the email box:

Hi,

My name is Carol Fisher. I am the owner of AeroplaneBooks.com. We supply thousands of modelers across the world with reference material for the models they build, so I thought this might be of some interest to the people in your club. If you agree, please pass it along.

We are trying something new at AeroplaneBooks.com, something we hope will become a regular feature. It's called "Ask the Aviation Author." Lynn Ritger, who has written two books, Modeler's Datafile #9 and #10, The Messerschmitt Bf 109: A Comprehensive Guide for the Modeler, Parts 1 & 2, has kindly agreed to be our first author.

The Bf 109 is one of the biggest selling topics at Aeroplane Books, so we thought this would be a great way to start off our "Ask the Author" series. Here's how it will work: You can submit any questions you might have about the Bf 109 through our website. We will choose a number of questions to give to Lynn, who will answer them to the best of his knowledge. Then they will be put into question and answer form and posted on the website. People who submit a question will also automatically have the final Q&A e-mailed directly to them.

You can start asking right away by clicking on the link below:

Region 1 Update 01-14-08

Greetings,
Here we are, the first Update for 2008, and a few things to mention. First off I hope everyone had great holidays, and Santa, Santo, Santu, or the mythological figure of your choice brought cool stuff to y'all!! I'll be going out of town for ten days starting 17 Jan, returning 26 Jan, and will only have limited e mail contact during this time. Please forgive any delays in getting back to anyone.

Rechartering is complete, and all 26 Region 1 chapters are good for another year. It seemed everyone had no problems getting the necessary items attended to, and all in good time. I appreciate the efforts everyone put into the process this year, and offer my thanks. I'll remind everyone to keep updating their fact sheets throughout the year, and sending me a copy of each edit. I forward those edits to Dick, who in turn updates your chapters information when received. It keeps your chapter's info current in the IPMS data base, and by being current allows you to only need to send off the payment next year, making rechartering a snap.

Attached you'll find the latest, greatest listing of all Approved 2008 events. If your chapter's event isn't listed it hasn't been approved yet. Or if I just flat out missed it, let me know!! I expect the fall scheduled events to be added shortly, with another updated list going out late spring.

While we're thinking about shows, I've been asked to reiterate the event approval process. So to refresh everyone's memory:
  1. Set a tentative event date with the facility. Have them write it in with pencil at this point.
  2. Contact the RC, (ME!!) to request the tentative date. IF requested date is open, or poses no conflicts with other events I approve it immediately.
  3. If further discussion is needed before approval, I'll get right back to you with any questions. I'll proceed as quickly as possible to work with you in order to get your date approved.
  4. Only when your event is RC Approved, go to IPMS Web site, under Member Services, pull up Event Registration Form. Fill out the form completely, checking off "RC Approved" box, and submit.
  5. Do not submit an event registration form without requesting approval first. Dick will only kick it back that will slow the process down considerably.
  6. Contact faculty and have them schedule in pen, the date is firm.
If there are any questions, please ask. I want everything to be smooth like a gravy sandwich, so if in doubt, ask!!

Everyone will bee seeing Noreastcon info being sent out by our hosts. I'll start the annual pleas by asking every Region 1 chapter to consider sponsoring a category at Noreastcon this year. If your chapter doesn't consider sponsorships, please consider Noreastcon. It's our regional, and our hosts work their butts off putting together an event. Please help them by sponsoring. And with mention of Noreastcon I'll also mention it's time to start putting you Region 1 Chapter of the Year, and Person of the Year nominations together, and send them my way. The cut off date for both nominations is March 15 this year. We all know people that should be nominated. Act now to make it a reality!!

With that being put out there, I'll end this. As always, please share this with the officers and members of your chapters!!

Noreastcon 2008 Hotel information

This just in from Art Loder. As we know the hotel is a little on the small side, it may be wise to make your reservations early.
Semper Fi
Doug

Dear Friends, I had a note from one of the Gang in Niagara Frontier that the Noreastcon 2008 Hotel had been sold out. Since the Hotel did the same thingto us last time, I asked Nick to check it out. It is not true that the Hotel is sold out as of this moment:

The Hotel has reserved all it's rooms for NOREASTCON 2008 until 30 days before the event. PRIOR TO 30 DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT, ONLY THOSE FOLKS MENTIONING THE "SCALE MODEL CONVENTION" OR THE "MODEL AIRPLANE CONVENTION " WILL BE SOLD ROOMS FOR THE CONVENTION NIGHTS [SORRY ARMOR GUYS, BUT JUST CONVEYING THE BASICS OF OUR HOBBY IS THE BEST WE CAN DO WITH CIVILIANS!].

AT 30 DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT, THEY OPEN RESERVATIONS SO THAT ANYONE CAN RESERVE. SO IF YOU GOT TURNED DOWN, PLEASE CALL BACK AND SAY THE MAGIC WORDS! PLEASE PASS THIS INFO ON TO YOUR CONTACTS! WE SOLD OUT THE HOTEL ONE OF THE NIGHTS LAST TIME, SO PLEASE DON'T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE...

Below is a mailing I sent to a list based on Noreastcon 2004 Registration Form e-mail addresses. I got a lot of returns, but some did get through [although I dont know which ones!] If you would Cut and Paste it and e-mail it on to your contacts, it would be deeply appreciated!

Dear Friends,
Although we are still in our "Hunkered down for the Winter" mode and hopefully busy on our workbenches, it's time to begin to think about the 2008 Spring and Summer IPMS Events.

This Year the National will be in Virginia Beach in early August, so we should expect a great turnout from Region One. The Website for the IPMS Nationals in 2008 is:

But before we all go to the Beach, there is a Regional Convention to which we can take entries for a trial run. It's the 38th Annual IPMS Region One Convention: NOREASTCON 2008, to be held on the weekend of April 25-26 at the Holiday Inn Express in Schoharie, New York.

Please check out our Website at:
http://www.aloder.freeyellow.com/
We have the entire Hotel reserved until 30 days before the event, but please reserve rooms early. Please also mention the Scale Modelers' Convention when reserving!
We hope to see you in April!

Subject: Noreastcon 2008 Announcement

Dear Chapter Contact,
The winter is beginning to wind down and our thoughts here in the Albany area are on the upcoming 38th Region One Convention, NOREASTCON 2008.

With postal expenses making individual member mailing prohibitively expensive, this year we are counting more than ever before on the network of IPMS Chapter Contacts and their Chapters.

IPMS NENY is asking if you would consider doing two things:

First, please pass on our publicity e-mails to your members. They will be brief messages with the URL of the IPMS NENY Website [http://www.aloder.freeyellow.com/ ] included. All Registration forms and Contest Rules and paperwork are available there, as well as hotel information.

Second, we intend to make one postal mailing about the end of January to each Chapter in Region One and the nearer Chapters in Region Two. This will include printed versions of the material on the Website for those without Internet connection. I've asked Doug Hamilton and Glen Martin for your mailing addresses, but it will help get the ball rolling if you could reply directly to me with them.

Please help us make this event a success by passing these items on to your members.

We have the entire Schoharie Holiday Inn Express held for us until 30 days before the event.
Please mention the Scale Modeler's Convention when reserving your rooms.

Thank you for helping to make this a memorable and successful event!
