Bulletin: November 2007

THE MINUTES
by Bobby the Blue
October was a good meeting, despite the road flooding. Regardless, we had 23 members and one guest bringing in 16 models and 15 works in progress.
OCTOBER MEETING!!!
NOMINATIONS FOR OFFICERS: See what happens when the Prez and the Veep are both unable to make the October meeting? They got re-elected to their posts! Ha! Take that!

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT: We had a good cluster of models in various stages of construction and some useful words of wisdom. WIP night is always very educational!

SWAP NIGHT: It went much better this time around. More people brought stuff to sell, and other people brought home a bunch of it.
You can see pics from each meeting on Gordon’s blog:
http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/
On the agenda: November
CONTEST NIGHT, 4TH QUARTER 2007: This is the final installment of the annual contest, so it’s your last chance to rake in some last minute votes before the final numbers for the year are crunched. Remember, this is the REGULAR contest. You know, the quarterly contest with six categories. Yeah, that one! Anything that hasn’t been in a regular quarterly contest will qualify.

SUPER RAFFLE: This is everyone’s favorite activity of the year. You got one super raffle ticket for each new model you brought in over the last year. We usually have over one hundred items in the super raffle so chances of winning are pretty good. If you have anything you’d like to donate for the super raffle, this is the meeting to do so! By the way, be sure your dues are paid up, or else you don’t get your raffle tickets.

November Meeting: Friday, 11/16/2007 at the Bergen Beach Sports Complex!

Theme contest alert!!!
It’s NOVEMBER!!!!
Before you know it December will be knocking on the door and the theme contest will be upon us! Remember, the December meeting is usually on the second Friday, which will be the 14th. Will you be ready? Now is a great time to get started for…
WE MEAN BUSINESS!!!
“WE MEAN BUSINESS” will be a theme contest honoring the memory of founding member Bert Berg. He’s remembered fondly as being a businessman, first and foremost. With that in mind, the sponsors (Frank C, Russ H, Jimmy M, Frank T, and your humble narrator) are bringing a theme contest all about PRODUCT PLACEMENT to the BPMS in December. Does anything else scream out capitalism more than the Christmas Season? With that, we’re asking the members to build something showing product placement. It can be real, eg: a jumbo jet with some markings from some airline, a race-car with sponsor labels, or you can invent something. We encourage the use of imagination! Since we are in the beginning stages, we may yet come up with some special awards, let’s say, for ingenuity. If you have any questions, feel free to contact any of the sponsors, we’ll be happy to assist!

We are also thinking of some special awards that may include the following: Funny Business, Monkey Business, Out of Business, Big Business, Small Business, Mom & Pop Business; Risky Business. Have fun with it!

Speicher Report

OK - I finished all the photo shop work this afternoon and with the names you sent back, I should have our Christmas card to Speicher finished tonight. I’ll send it to you and Frank C for proofreading, if you don’t mind. I’ll just send you a compressed jpeg file. The original PowerPoint is approaching 16 MB. (Which is funny, ‘cause I deal in TB most of my professional life, but email being what it is, 16MB seems large.)

Region 1 Update 11-1-07

Hi gang,

Just a few quickies his time.

Art Loder reports the Noreastcon web site is up and going. All the info regarding the show will be posted here. Hotel, directions, categories, and of course all the latest info can be had at http://www.aloder.freeyellow.com/

The second Region 1 Mini-meeting will happen this weekend at Baycon. This one is for the Easterner's of the region. We had a great turnout at the Mid Hudson event, and reports from both will be distributed after Baycon. Of course everyone is invited to attend, and encouraged to bring a topic for discussion. Or just stop in and say Howdy!! It'll be very informal, no tux's please, and maybe even interesting. Hope to see you there.

One last thing, I received the attached document from Dick Montgomery. It isn't "official IPMS Business" or anything, but felt it noteworthy enough to pass along.

I told you this would be quick!! And as always, please share this information with the officers and members of your chapter.

September 21, Meeting

Quick links to 9/21/2007 Member's Works by member's name and model.

Heads up for November Meeting!

Hi All!

The November meeting is always a huge meeting. So you can start getting ready for for the meeting, here's what we have on the agenda...

Super Raffle: (Members only) For each new model you brought in during the year, you will be getting one raffle ticket. Tickets will be distributed by the officers at the beginning of the meeting.

Christmas Dinner Discussion: This is separate from the Holiday meeting and the desserts. Last year a group of members got together for a dinner at the Outback Steakhouse in Bay Terrace, Queens. We're asking people to do some research and be prepared to bring in your ideas regarding where we can eat this time around and when would be a good time.

Final Push for the WE MEAN BUSINESS theme: If you've looked at the calender lately, it's nearly November! Time to build for the theme contest is running short. No better time to get things done than right now!

by Bobby the Blue
September was a good meeting, or so I hear. My sources relayed the information of the meeting to me. We had 22 members and one guest bringing in 21 models.

SEPTEMBER MEETING!!!

Surprise BBQ: There were some left over vittles from the August meeting, so we quietly put them aside for a low key BBQ II in September. There were limited quantities, but with limited numbers at the meeting, it went well. Thanks to the team who get it all done.

Camo Theme Night: These theme nights are always fun to see how members interpret the concept. This time we got to see all sorts of goodies dressed in their finest camo patterns: ranging from armor to air to sci-fi we had quite a good showing. Thanks for participating!

Swap Night: Other than Lou from Ace Hobbies, who had a nice assortment of the latest and greatest kits, there wasn’t much. How about a Swap Night Part 2 for October?

You can see pics from each meeting on Gordon’s blog:

http://gmobile17.blogspot.com/

On the agenda: October

Nominations For Officers: What?!? These guys are only in their first year! Fuhgettabouttit!

Work In Progress Night: Do you have something(s) that you’re working on? Well, toss some works in progress into a box and bring it to the meeting to show the group what you’re up to. We’ll be telling a couple words about our work, so be prepared!

Swap Night: Okay, here’s another chance at selling stuff off. Please, feel free to bring in stuff to sell or trade. Don’t forget to bring cash to buy goodies with, there’s no tab at this bar!

A Thank You Note from Iraq

I got the following thank you from a soldier using the model club facilities at FOB Speicher. Thought you’d like to post it and/or use it in the newsletter.

Hugh

Dear Sir,

On behalf of deployed modelers in Iraq, thank you and the Brooklyn Plastic Modeler's Society for your generosity and thoughtfulness.

I was recently at FOB Speicher and heard about the Model Club. Once I found it, I was simply amazed at how well stocked the club was with kits and supplies. You and your fellow modelers have really made a huge positive impact in our deployment. With the chaos, long hours, and austere working conditions, any escape is welcome - especially settling in with a model.

The Brooklyn Plastic Modeler's Society and other like-minded clubs, businesses and
modelers have provided a critical link for deployed modelers and introduced other people into our great hobby.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Andrew Taylor

Loss of a member: Art Gerber

On Sept. 12, 2007 Art Gerber, a former president of BPMS, passed away unexpectedly. Art discovered BPMS when he attended Big Apple Con, a convention we held in the mid-seventies. Art joined BPMS and began to make the trip from his home state of New Jersey to attend our meetings in Brooklyn. Art soon became a valued member of the club and served a term as President in 1980. Some years later, Art joined fellow modelers in his home state, but maintained his connections to BPMS.

Over the years Art's modeling skills constantly grew until he became one of the premier armor and vehicle builders in the hobby. He was especially known for his small scale scratch built models with realistic weathering. Those of us who attended IPMS conventions were always pleased to meet and greet Art and his wife Carolyn at Region I, Region II, and National conventions. At the awards ceremonies of those conventions Art's name was always prominent among the winners. BPMS extends its condolences to Carolyn Gerber.

Region 1 Update 09-19-07

Greetings Region 1-ites!!

This update is being written from my new home office, formally my son’s room. It’s very cool to have a dedicated office, the kids have moved out, and the dog died. Life is good!! And now, on to the news.

First, I must take a moment to pass along that IPMS Head Armor Judge, Art Gerber has passed away. Many of you may know Art from his numerous trips attending Noreastcon, attending the IPMS national convention, or from an AMPS event. Art was a really nice guy who was always fun to talk to. I’ll miss seeing him at various IPMS events, as I know most of you will also. Art had a profound effect on the way IPMS judging in the armor areas is conducted, and to honor that impact, I’ve been told the Best Armor Award at the IPMS nationals will be renamed in his honor. I feel this is a most fitting way to honor this gentleman, and superb modeler. Our condolences go out to his family.

On a happier note, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the newest chapter to IPMS and Region 1. IPMS Penobscot Valley Modelers is our new addition to the IPMS family. They’re a brand new group that is hoping for good things to come from affiliating with IPMS. Led by President Keith Heald, they meet at Joe’s Hobbies each Thursday evening in Howland Maine. Russell Keith is the chapter contact, and his info is below. Please add Russ to your address books and mailing lists. I’m sure they’d like to hear from everyone, as well as sharing what they’re doing with us. They’re the first new chapter in region1 in quite a while, and I’m happy to welcome them to Region 1.

The rechartering period is coming up fast, so now is the time for all chapters to dust off your fact sheets, and make sure they’re up to date. If you can’t find it, let me know and I’ll shoot another copy off to you. Just e mail an updated copy of the fact sheet to Dick Montgomery and me, then snail mail a check to Dick, and it’s done. The important thing are that the officer corps and the five required members are all current IPMS members, who’s expiration dates are AFTER 1 January 2008. The officers do count towards the five!! And don’t forget the rechartering fee has been increased to $20.00, and the deadline is still 31 December 2007. I’ll remind everyone again after 1 October that it’s rechartering time!!

The current election of national officers is nearly complete. I hope everyone has voted, because your chance is rapidly diminishing!! One problem with the elections has been the low turnout, which brings the agony of hoping for enough votes to make a valid ballot. Please take the time to vote, even if you don’t like any of the candidates, as there’s a box on the ballot for an abstention, which still counts toward a valid election. There are some fine people running for office, and some real choices. Please make one!!!

The web site for the 2008 National Convention is now active, and can be found at: http://www.ipmsusa2008.org All the latest greatest info will appear for what is looking like another great event. I would expect a good number of Region1 folk to attend being it’s fairly close.

The two mini-meetings are still scheduled for the Mid Hudson event on 20 October for the western end of the region, and Baycon on 4 November for the eastern end. I would hope each chapter is able to end a rep to one, or both. We’ll save a seat for you!!

The fall contest schedule will be starting very soon, I’ll send out a new schedule, including what I have for 08 shortly. But I have to say please support your brother chapters’ events with sponsorships, attendance, and helping judge when you get there. We all know a helping hand is most welcome, especially when it’s your show!!

With all that behind us, it’s time to close this blabbering. Until next time anyway!! Be safe, and as always, share this with the officers and members of your chapter!!

THE MINUTES

by Bobby the Blue

August was looking like it might’ve been a washout with a rain storm hitting during the rush hour, but it seems the BBQ had people showing up anyway! We had 28 members and one guest bringing in 42 models.

AUGUST MEETING!!!

CONTEST NIGHT – 3RD QTR 2007: We had the third installment of the annual contest. The votes are in. Your last chance to rack up some extra votes will be in November, the fourth quarter contest.

SUMMER BBQ: Since the turn out for the meeting was slightly off, it was pretty easy to maintain order over the food. A heavy team of dedicated gents worked together to make this a wonderful event. First and foremost we have to thanks Vinny, without his efforts we wouldn’t be able to even have such an occasion. He got us the place. He secured the grills, and picked up the lion share of the grub. You’re too awesome dude! We also need to thank Don Illjes and Mike Crescenzo for assisting with the cooking duties. Other guys to thank for contributing food would be Don for the spring rolls, Gordon for the sausages, and Guy for the cookies. Thanks to the extra hands who helped things move smoothly go to Jimmy, Jeff, and Ray. And to anyone who helped make our second annual another success, THANKS! We’re looking forward to next year!

On the agenda: September

CAMOUFLAGED MODEL NIGHT: This is another one of our theme nights. All you have to do is bring something in that’s in a camo paint scheme. Simple as that. Be prepared to maybe tell the group a couple words on your work.

SWAP NIGHT: Need some space? Have stuff you would like to part with? Bring in goodies to trade or sell to the September meeting. It’s also a good idea to bring some cash. You never know when someone might bring in that grail kit you’ve been looking for and there’s no tab at this bar!

THEME FOR DECEMBER 2007

The next theme contest “WE MEAN BUSINESS,” will be honoring the memory of founding member Bert Berg. He’s remembered fondly as being a business man, first and foremost. With that in mind, the sponsors (Frank C, Russ H, Jimmy M, Frank T, and your humble narrator) are bringing a theme contest all about PRODUCT PLACEMENT to the BPMS in December. Since we are in the beginning stages, we may yet come up with some special awards, let’s say, for ingenuity. Speicher Update - September 2007

The contributions for July and August kept up the momentum established in May and June! Thanks to everyone for continuing to keep the troops in mind when looking at your personal “warehouse in the basement” and on trips to the hobby shop, the dollar store, and home improvement stores.

Cape Cod Model Show Cancelled!!!

It is with much regret I have to announce that the Cape Cod Scale Modelers Association has cancelled our 16th Annual Model Show, slated to be held on September 23rd, 2007.

Many factors have led to this difficult decision, from a lack of vendors and sponsors for the show, to the diminished support of individuals and the state of the hobby in general.

We will take this time off to regroup and reexamine the state of the hobby, fine-tune our organization where required and hopefully come back with an annual event that we all can enjoy again.

Thank you, Jeffrey S. Harper

Region 1 News Flash 08-17-07

This just in from the home office. Sounds interesting and fun!! I know a few Region 1 folks that could do quite well in submitting something!!

Please share this with the members of your chapter.

I don't know how many of you subscribe to C&D but they run an annual "Readers' 10 Best" issue where they give out prizes for reader submissions. These change every year, but this year they are looking for photos of the best Model Car Collection. You can win a prize and get your 15 minutes of fame. Surely within IPMS there are a couple of members with, shall we say, oversized model car collections (and Mark Gustavson's museum should win outright).

Talk this up amongst your fellow members and at chapters if possible - could be some great publicity for us.

Here's the link to the contest and how to submit:
