Strange days. After our very successful October meeting, we had 24 members and one guest who brought in 17 models, the Tristate area was devastated by Hurricane Sandy then Winter Storm Athena. With massive destruction, flooding, and fuel shortages the only reasonable course of action we could take was to cancel the November meeting.

October Meeting

NOMINATIONS: The current regime has put in its two years up front. So this time around we nominated Ray Whitton for President and Gordon Cheung for Veep. They will ascend to their thrones up front starting in JANUARY.

MODEL PLEDGE: We had over a dozen model pledges shown, which isn’t too shabby considering that they filled the tables and made a good showing of it. Thank you to the members who participated, you’ll see FIVE extra November Super Raffle tickets for your efforts!

JANUARY SUPER RAFFLE: January won’t only bring the END OF THE WORLD THEME CONTEST, but we’re also going to have a “January Super Raffle!” Not to be confused with the Super raffle that we conduct every year in November, the January Super raffle will cost $5 / ticket. Each will be a shot at winning one of the following models:
  • Trumpeter 1/32 Mig-21 UM two seater with extra Verlinden detail set. Joe B
  • Trumpeter 1/350 JMDF DDG-173 Kongo Jeff E
  • Dragon 1/35 Jagdpanzer IV/70 (A) with added metal gun barrel and resin zimmert detail set Ray K
  • Polar Lights 1/350 NX-01 Enterprise Ray K.
Thanks for the donations: Joe Bergman, Ray Keegan, and Jeff Eng.
Coming January! Coming January! Coming January! Coming January!

On the agenda: DECEMBER

HOLIDAY LUNCHEON: Everything went well and that everyone had a good time at the Tasty Tavern. Good food and good friends! Hopefully this will give birth to a new BPMS tradition!

If you completed your pledge, you get an additional FIVE tickets! Your humble narrator will have the tickets at the meeting for you! DONATIONS FOR THIS SUPER RAFFLE ARE APPRECIATED AND ENCOURAGED!

CONTEST NIGHT 4Q12: This is the FINAL BPMS Quarterly Contest for 2012. This is your last chance to rake in some votes so make the best of it!

September was another fun meeting. We had 28 members and one guest who brought in 22 models.

September Meeting
D-LIGHTFUL THEME: Nearly half of the models on display fit into the THINGS WITH Ds theme. From a 1929 Duesenberg to Destroid Monster, we had quite an impressive showing. Thanks guys!

SWAP NIGHT: Members brought in a varied assortment of kits to trade and sell.

HVHMG: Tim Greeman of the HVHMG was a guest at the last meeting. Besides bringing some very nice armor models, he also reminded us that his club is having a show on October 20, the day after our meeting. We sponsored a trophy package, by the way. More details at: http://www.hvhmg.com/

DECEMBER SUPER RAFFLE: December won’t only bring the END OF THE WORLD THEME CONTEST, and desserts, but we’re also going to have a “December Super Raffle!” Not to be confused with the Super raffle that we conduct every year in November, the December Super raffle will cost $5 / ticket. Each will be a shot at winning one of the following models:
• Trumpeter 1/32 Mig-21 UM two seater with extra Verlinden detail set.
• Trumpeter 1/350 JMDF DDG-173 Kongo
• Dragon 1/35 Jagdpanzer IV/70 (A) with added metal gun barrel and resin zimmert detail set
• Polar Lights 1/350 NX-01 Enterprise
Thanks for the donations: Joe Bergman, Ray Keegan, and Jeff Eng.

On the agenda: October
HOLIDAY DINNER: Earlier this year we celebrated the club’s 40th anniversary. Some members wondered why we don’t have a dinner like that more often? Why wait for ten years to pass? Did you know that the tradition of the Holiday Dinner was originally started to celebrate another year of BPMS in the books? Verily, it’s true! So we pounded out some ideas and plans at the last meeting. However, we found that the usual Tuesday night dinner was creating some scheduling difficulties for many members. That's when an idea struck Frank T. Why not have the Holiday Dinner on a weekend afternoon, just like the 40th Anniversary? So we've made contact with The Tasty Tavern and booked December 1st at 12:30 in the afternoon. We have the area from 12:30 - 3:30. If you arrive early, there is a cash bar available. Food would be served starting at 1:00. We'll be making choices regarding food options at the next meeting. We can bring our own cake and they will supply coffee. Price should be in the $30 / person range.

NOMINATIONS: The current regime has put in its two years up front. Let’s see what pretty faces we can get up front this time around!

2012 MODEL PLEDGE: It seemed that we kept the concept entirely too loose for members tastes in the past so we tightened them up a little in 2011 and it was a success. You just had to bring in an unbuilt model between January and March 2012 to declare as your pledge model. Please have it finished for the OCTOBER MEETING, for a display. After October you may bring back your pledge for the November meeting for the last contest of the year. For your efforts you get an additional FIVE Super Raffle tickets for completing your pledge! Sweet! Easy enough!

Holiday Dinner Update

At last night's meeting we discussed about how members sggested after the anniversary luncheon earlier this year, that it would be something nice to do more often. Initially, the Holiday dinners were put together to celebrate another year of BPMS for the history books and they included family and loved ones. We've gone away from that in recent years, but this would be a good time to get back to that tradition.

We sent around a list for names of those who were interested, but were surprised by the low numbers. Since we usually have this on a Tuesday night, logistically, it made it immediately difficult for many members to be able to say whether or not they can come at all. That's when an idea struck Frank T. Why not have the Holiday Dinner on a weekend afternoon, just like the 40th Anniversary? So we've made contact with The Tasty Tavern and booked December 1st at 12:30 in teh afternoon. We have the area from 12:30 - 3:30. If you arrive early, there is a cash bar available. Food would be served starting at 1:00. We'll be making choices regarding options at the nxt meeting. We can bring our own cake and they will supply coffee.

August was another fun meeting. We had 22 members who brought in only 14 models, mostly for the quarter contest. The models were almost outnumbered by the pizzas!

August Meeting
PIZZA NIGHT: Another feeding frenzy meeting! We had in about a dozen various pies and killed them! Well done!

CONTEST – 3RD QTR 2012: Where has the year gone? We had our THIRD installment of the annual contest. The bulk of the models on the tables were for the contest so you know the quality was good!

On the agenda: September
Recently we’ve been having a Holiday Dinner for members, and a desserts meeting with all the awards and the theme contest that guests are welcome to come to. Honestly, watching the awards ceremony probably isn’t the most exciting show we can offer our guests. Would we prefer to have a more family oriented holiday dinner, we can bring our loved ones, and then have our usual business meeting on December 21? We’re thinking about maybe a fine dinner, possibly Asian Cuisine. Any ideas? Please have them ready for the meeting, we’ll need to discuss this and hammer it out as we’re already into September. We’ll only have another meeting to work out concepts.

D-LIGHTFUL THEME: THINGS WITH Ds. This will be a display of models that have the letter D in the name somewhere. It can be part of a designation, name, cup size, it’s up to you. Have fun with it!

SWAP NIGHT: Bring in kits to trade or to sell. You might want to bring some cash in case that grail kit shows up. There’s no tab at this bar!

July was another great meeting. We had 24 members and 1 guest who brought in 28 models, which everyone took a turn discussing with the group.
July Meeting
BBQ NIGHT PT2: We had some hot dogs left over from BBQ night in June, so we served them up for this meeting. Yum!
  •  1/32 Trumpeter Mig-21UM (w/ photoetch)
  •  1/350 Polar Lights Enterprise NX-01
  •  1/35 Dragon Jagdpanzer IV/70 (resin zimmerit, metal gun barrel)
  •  1/350 JMSDF
Thanks for the donations: Joe Bergman, Ray Keegan, and Jeff Eng.
THE QUEEN THEME: ’52 - ‘12: It was a theme night commemorating the Queen’s reign. Some members brought in models for the display.
MOON LANDING: Vinny brought in a display commemorating the 43rd anniversary of the first moon lading, July 20, 1969.

MOSQUITOCON & THE MISSING AWARD: Joe B. mentioned to the group that he STILL hasn't gotten his award from the NJ MosquitoCon in April. [Editor's note: I hope this matter gets taken care of sooner than later. It hasn't been handled very well so far. It's not good PR and can sour people from going to future shows. The man just wants to be made whole in this matter. ~Bob P.]

SWAP NIGHT: Kits were traded and sold. Aight?
On the agenda: AUGUST
PIZZA NIGHT: Another feeding frenzy meeting! It’s this simple, be up do date with your dues, don’t bring any guests, and you can eat to your heart’s content when the pizza is up for grabs. I’ll ask everyone to please wait for the officers to announce when to commence eating, otherwise the meeting can get out of control FAST! Thanks in advance for being patient. There will be plenty for everyone.
CONTEST – 3RD QTR 2012: Where has the year gone? This is the THIRD INSTALLMENT of the annual BPMS model contest. So that means you bring in something that hasn’t competed in one of the quarterly contests to place in one of our six categories. If you built something new for THAT 70S THEME CONTEST, feel free to bring it in for this contest.

PennCon 2012 - 15 September 2012

PennCon this year is on September 15, 2012.

This is the link to the PennCon contest web site:
http://www.cenpennipms.com/penncon/penncon.html

This year's show is at the Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, PA. This is the link to their web site:
http://www.armyheritage.org/component/content/article/34-banner-content/107-army-heritage-and-education-center.html

A correction to the travel estimate I provided at the July meeting - Google Maps indicates a driving time of 3 hours and 40 minutes from Bergen Beach. [I had added the time it takes me to drive from the meeting site to my house west of Philadelphia (about 3 hours) and from my house to Mechanicsburg, PA (the previous contest location) (about 2 hours). If you go directly on I-78, you save an hour and change.]

Central PA is beautiful in the fall and Gettysburg is less than an hour from Carlisle if a weekend road trip appeals to you.

The End Of The World Theme Contest

The-End Theme

The End Of The World

Theme Contest
December 21, 2012

Will 12/21/2012 bring the end of the world?

Not likely, but we just happen to have a club meeting on the date that many are saying will be the end of days. What better way to see the world go out with a theme contest marking THE END OF THE WORLD?!?!

AIM: Build something that can be tied into THE END OF THE WORLD in some way, shape, or form. It's that easy to build for!

Examples: Martian War Machine, Space Shuttle from Armageddon, A nuclear missile, a zombie figure, etc, etc. If you can rationally tie it in to the theme, you’re good to go!

We are planning on some special certificates for depicting the following catastrophic events:
• Land
• Air
• Sea

Contest Sponsors:
• Jeff E
• Russ H
• Bobby P

Easy enough! Come to us with any questions. Have fun!

Convention Update-57 Days to go

Hello Everyone,
Hard to believe that we are just under 57 days away from the 2012 IPMS/USA National Convention. I have some updates and reminders that everyone attending should be aware of.

Walt Disney Theme Park Tickets: As some of you may or may not know, Walt Disney has raised the prices of theme park tickets back on June 3, 2012. Walt Disney will honor the discount ticket pricing that we had been offered for the convention up to June 30, 2012. This actually gives you a better discount now!

Registration: Register for the Convention by June 30, 2012 and save money! On July 1st the Convnetion registration will go up in cost. http://ipms2012.org/Registration/registration.html

Tours: If you have not signed up and are interested in taking a tour, now is the time to do it. We are rapidly approaching our deadline of July 1st of when we will have to purchase the tickets and arrange the buses. You must be a registered Convention attendee to go on the tours. You can either register online or via mail when registering for the Convention. http://ipms2012.org/Tours/tours.html

Trophy Sponsorships: We still have plenty of Trophy packages available. You can mail in the form or even pay online. http://ipms2012.org/Contest/Trophies/trophies.html

Volunteers: We still can use volunteers. If you can help out by just giving a few hours of your time during the Convention, it would go along way in helping us make this show a success. We have a link that you can sign up ahead of time. You can email the volunteer coordinator or you can just show up and say that you are here to help. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0A4DABAB2BA31-ipms Volunteer Cordinator OzzieL@ipms2012.org

Free Transportation: If you are staying on Walt Disney property and flying into Orlando International Airport, please do not forget to register for free round trip transportation. This will save you some serious money on a rental car that would just be parked in the parking lot. If you want to rent a car while at Disney, there is a car rental facility right on site.

May was another great meeting. We had 25 members and 0 guests who brought in 21 models, of which 19 were for the contest. Despite Prez Don and your humble narrator both being out, and bad traffic, Veep Charlie Nelson did a splendid job of running things at nicely-attended meeting.

May Meeting

PARTS BOX: Guys brought in spare parts, too!

RAFFLE: We had a raffle. Thanks to Jeff for finding new items to mix things up and keep it fresh.

CONTEST NIGHT: The bulk of the models on the tables were for the annual contest. Nice showing! We also had the members tell the group about their entries.

NOREASTCON: We had a discussion regarding the BPMS presence at the Noreastcon out on Long Island. Joe Bergman gave his Lighting Models discussion there. I’m sure there were many happy modelers in attendance for that one! The BPMS sponsored a trophy package and the following members took home awards: Nestor, Tomasz, Charlie, Joe, Costa, Kamila and Katrina. Well done and congrats!

40TH ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON: We had a discussion about the luncheon. We should have something interesting at the next meeting regarding the anniversary. Stay tuned!

April was another great meeting. We had 29 members and 0 guests who brought in 31 models, of which 14 were WIPs, to share with the group.

April Meeting
LIGHTING UP MODELS CLINIC: Hosted by Joe Bergman and President Don Illjes, we were in for a treat! These two gents filled us in on the world of Light Emitting Diodes, and some very smart ways to make your models more fun to the beholder, but not breaking the bank in the process. Thanks guys!

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT: Members came in with some 14 WIPs. We got to see some nice work in various stages of completion. The members told us a few words about their work. If you listened, there were some pearls of wisdom shared!

TROPHY PACKAGES: We voted to sponsor trophy packages for this year’s Noreastcon and Nationals.

40TH ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON: Were you there? We had about 28 members and loved ones together at The 56th Fighter Group on Saturday, April 28. Fine food, good friends, and a perfect backdrop meant we had an amazing time. Thanks to all the members who helped out with the set-up, and arrangements. Thanks to those who were able to send us on short trips down memory lane. Of course, thanks to all the members and their better halves who came to share this special occasion. The next thought is, why do we wait ten years to have these?

Again, thank you to everyone involved in the big day!

THAT 70s THEME: It’ll be here sooner than you think! Are you ready for it? Find out all about this theme contest HERE.

On the agenda: APRIL
PARTS BOX: Do you have spare parts sitting around? No idea what to do with them? Bring them in! Let the members have at it. You never know, your junk might be another’s treasure!

CONTEST NIGHT: this will be the second installment of the BPMS annual contest. So just bring in your work that has NOT been to a quarterly contest, fill out the papers for it and compete. That simple! I will compile the votes from the four contests for the awards meeting in DECEMBER.

‘Support the Troops’campaign update!

Since the beginning of the year, our ‘Support the Troops’campaign has supported the IPMS Wounded Warriors chapter at the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Ft. Sam Houston, TX with seven shipments totaling 141 items, including 62 model kits, an airbrush, and hobby magazines. Past IPMS USA Vice-President Dick Montgomery is coordinating the effort to provide models, supplies and reference material to the Wounded Warriors chapter. This task includes rectifying missing parts or unusable decals in donated kits. Please consider donating decals that can be used to replace aged or missing decals in previously donated kits. Also, since we’re shipping domestically, paint donations do not have to be exclusively water-based.

Thanks again for your support.

BPMS Bulletin: March 2012

by Bobby Pokorny

February was another great meeting. We had 31 members and 1 guest who brought in 23 gorgeous models for a very INTERESTING cross section for our first contest of 2012!

February Meeting
CONTEST NIGHT 1Q’12: The bulk of the models on display at the meeting were for the first quarter of the BPMS Annual contest. A lot of great quality models with a good spread amongst the categories. This will be a year of fierce competition.

SHOW US YOUR TOOL: This is always a fun activity. Members brought in items they use to make the hobby easier. Did you learn something new? I did!

40TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER: Here are the arrangements so far. We have a room at The 56th Fighter Squadron for Saturday, April 28. The cost, tax and tip, is around $30 per person. A cash bar will be available for those who want to have a drink. We were none too soon in making the arrangement. The room we used last time was already booked; however, there is another very nice room on the first floor which we will be able to use from 1pm to 5pm. The food will be available, buffet style, at 1:30 pm.
• Salad - Tossed garden salad or tomato mozzarella salad
• Entrée - Chicken marsala, or penne a la vodka, or sliced steak with mushroom
• Dessert - Cheesecake or chocolate mousse
• Unlimited coffee, tea, and soft drinks.

On the agenda: MarchDECAL SWAP NIGHT: Bring in decals to sell or trade. You might want to bring some cash in case that sheet you’ve been looking for shows up!

FAVORITE MODEL: Bring in a model, built of unbuilt, and be prepared to tell the group a couple words about WHY this is your favorite model. Simple!

2012 MODEL PLEDGE: It seemed that we kept the concept entirely too loose for members tastes in the past so we tightened them up a little in 2011 and it was a success. Just bring in an unbuilt model between January and March 2012 to declare as your pledge model. Please have it finished for the OCTOBER MEETING, for a display. After October you may bring back your pledge for the November meeting for the last contest of the year. For your efforts you get an additional FIVE Super Raffle tickets for completing your pledge! Sweet! Easy enough!

A SIDE NOTE: Due to rising costs, soda will increase to $1 a can.

Our next meeting will be on
MARCH 16, 2012
EARLY THIS MONTH!
Same time,
Same place!

Donations for IPMS Wounded Warriors Chapter

The Wounded Warriors POC, Dick Montgomery, got our first box of donations.

Attached is his thank you note.

Subject: Re: Donations for IPMS Wounded Warriors Chapter

Hugh,

The box of donated items from IPMS Brooklyn arrived today and they are exactly what is needed for the Warriors! Please thank your chapter members for their generosity and for the effort it took to get the materials together and get them shipped. Thanks to you as well since it was you who organized everything!

Our next meeting with the Warriors is on the 24th and the donated items will be turned over to them at that time. I'll also file the paperwork showing IPMS Brooklyn as the donor. A certificate will be sent to you by Ft. Sam Houston in about 4 to 6 weeks.
I'll see if I can get some digital images of some of the Warriors digging through the stash!

Request from Hugh

From Hugh A:
I'm working on a display of photos and other material, such as old newsletters or award certificates, for the anniversary luncheon in April. Anyone who would like to provide material can scan and send it to me at shuvlboy[at]gmail.com or hand it to me at the meetings in February, March, and April. The item should be light enough to be able to be affixed to a tri-fold display board, as used in science fairs. Thanks.

FLOYD BENNETT FIELD: The BPMS will forever hold a dear spot in our heart for one of our former homes, Floyd Bennett Field. We were updated that the Ryan Center is nearing completion and that there will be a grand opening of sort and group held volunteers who would be willing to represent the BPMS in a display. I’ve gotten word that this may unfold in OCTOBER. Details to come!

THAT 70s THEME: The details for June’s theme contest were unveiled and discussed with the group. Find out all about it HERE.

On the agenda February

CONTEST NIGHT 1Q’12: Our first contest night is upon us! This is the first installment of the quarterly contest. It’s the usual six categories so bring in anything that hasn’t been in a quarterly contest, including entries in December’s theme contest. The numbers are crunched after the fourth contest in November, and announced in December.

SHOW US YOUR TOOL: Not nearly as vulgar as it sounds, this activity has been a long running BPMS tradition. Bring in something(s) that you put to use when building models that you think the group could benefit from learning about. It could be supplies, tools, or an adapted method. Feel free to bring in anything and be prepared to tell us a few words about what you have.

That 70s Theme Contest - June 2012

Photobucket
June 15, 2012
The year 2012 marks FORTY FABULOUS YEARS OF BPMS!!!
What better way to honor this momentous occasion than with a theme contest celebrating the early years of the club! During the 70s the BPMS was formed, became IPMS Chartered, hosted the Big Apple Con 10/11/1975, NoreastCon 6 05/1977, and was active in bringing the Intrepid to NYC starting in 1978 (even though she didn’t arrive until the early 80s).

AIM: Build something that members would’ve built during the 70s. That means anything that was kitted up through 1979 is eligible. Simple. I would prefer if members keep mods down to what was possible in those days. I don’t want anyone breaking the bank on aftermarket resin and / or photo-etched parts, but mods with sheet plastic, putty, etc. are all acceptable. Aftermarket decals are also fine.

I am planning on some special certificates to commemorate the following:
• Air – Bert Berg
• Armor – Art Gerber
• Figure – Leon Kestenbaum
• Sea – Cap’n Bart Holmes
• Sci-Fi – Dave Cockrum
• Misc – Joe Turner
Contest Sponsors:

• Hugh Alcock
• Joe Bergman
• Tom Knoll
• James Maroney
• Bobby Pokorny

Easy enough! Come to us with any questions. Have fun!
