Bulletin: July 2006

THE MINUTES

by Bobby P.

June turned out to be a nice meeting despite the evil traffic delays that day. There were 23 members in attendance plus two guests who brought a grand total of 27 models.

JUNE MEETING!!!

GRAY MODEL NIGHT: Since the “Green Model Night” did so well in February, we decided that a couple other simple theme nights might be fun. So June was “GRAY MODEL NIGHT!!!” It was a resounding success! We had a large display of gray models. Thanks guys for the participation.

PARTS BOX NIGHT: Parts were brought in by some, and taken home by others. Another triumph!

PIZZA & BBQ NIGHT: Okay, once again, JULY WILL BE PIZZA NIGHT for the WORN, WEATHERED, AND WORKING THEME, and AUGUST will be BBQ NIGHT for the third installment of the annual contest.

CONTEST NIGHT: There were entries in every category, but some categories were rather sparse. I know some people got to take advantage and rake in a bunch of votes.

On the agenda: July

IT’S FINALLY HERE!!!
Worn, Weathered, & Working Theme: Hugh, Frank C. and Frank T. offered to sponsor a theme contest that commemorates the works of the late Captain Bart Holmes, items that show the rigors and abuses of regular (and not so regular) service. This can easily be applied to all aspects of modeling.

PIZZA NIGHT: Members come out of the woodworks for this most important event on the BPMS Calendar. We had a little shuffle, but be assured there WILL BE PIZZA AT THIS MEETING! With that said, please be sure to check with the treasurer that your dues are paid up, as no one gets to chow down unless their account is current. And we ask, please no guests. That’s the customary statement. If people show up, they will need to chip in.

SUMMER KIT SALE: Bring in kits to sell or to trade. Be sure to bring cash, there’s no tab at this bar!

Region 1 Update 7-12-06

Hi everyone,

A few quick items on todays plate.

First, let's all welcome Glen Martin as the RC-2. Glen has been named to take the post vacated by Tim Hortman down in Region 2. He's from the Richmond VA area, and hopefully, we'll see him a a Region 1 event or two. Welcome Glen!!

I've checked all the e mail addresses listed on the IPMS web site to make sure all your contact information is correct, and lines up with the info I have on file. Let me know right away if any of your chapters contact information changes. I'll pass it along to Dick Montgomery to update your web info. This task was done as a prelude to the new rechartering format that will be introduced this year. All rechartering will be accomplished via e mail for the first time in IPMS history. So it'll be extremely important to ensure the information you send back is accurate. And as a reminder, the rechartering period will run from October to December 31.

I've also been asked to remind everyone about some of the benefits your chapter receives for it's rechartering fee. Listings on the web site and Journal for your event are important tools for spreading the word about your show, as is the insurance certificate you're issued for the facility. Another benefit you get, absolutly free, is acsess to the Frapper Map showing the location of your event. All chapters should be making use of this valuable resource, and did I metion it's free? Not only does it show the location of your event, but there's aloso space to add some contact info. The map can be accessed at: http://www.frappr.com/ipmscontests Check it out, and add your event to it now!!

The Nationals in Kansas City are rapidly approaching. It looks like it'll be another record breaking event, you won't want to miss. If you haven't made your reservations yet, I urge you not to waste any more time. Space is filling in quickly, and ytou won't want to shut out of this excellant event. Next year, the nationals will be held in Oragne County California, near the famed and fabled Disneyland complex. I know it'll be a very good event for families to attend. No word yet on the 08 version, slated to be back on the East Coast. I'll pass along the particulars when I get them. I've heard some rumors about that show, but will wait for the official word before saying more.

I know I promised a new approved event listing with this update, but am at work, and have that info on my home machine. I'll sent it out under seperate cover shortly.

Also, in the last update I mentioned that the ALMS race at Lime Rock was to be held on Monday. Thanks to all the guys that let me know it was actually on Saturday that weekend. I still couldn't make it, but appreciate the efforts to let me know anout the error. Thanks guys!!!!

As I said this will be short, I'll close this maddness. Please share this with the officers and members of your chapter.

RC-1 Update: 06/28/06

Greetings Boys and Girls,
Time for another update. A few things to pass along this time, so hold on, we'll be going from 0-60 in no time flat!!!

By now many of you should start receiving the latest issue of the Journal. I'll say up front, I'm really impressed by the changes the new team have made. The cover is very flashy, and really grabs your attention. There also have been many changes inside that will make for an easier publication to read. My hat's off to the new editorial team. Which makes it easier to ask for some new authors from Region 1. I know that an article showing off the beautiful Seagrave aerial truck from this years Noreastcon will be appearing in an issue in the not to distant future. My thanks to Charley Rowley for sharing his work with all the members of the Society.

It's time to vote once again. This time, it's for a number of Constitutional Amendments, which are important to determining the future of the Society. Voting can be accomplished right on the web site, or by traditional paper ballot that appears in the new Journal. Please, take a few moments and cast your ballot, it's really painless, and the future is in your hands. Vote early and often!!

Also on the horizon is Rechatering time. The rechartering window will open in October and run until the end of December. Please make sure all your necessary number of members (5)is up to date, and all officers are current members. These two items will greatly speed up the process, and eliminate anything getting bounced back for lack if info, incorrect info, and the other things that cause heartburn to our DLC, Dick Montgomery!! Dick tells me that he's cut back on his supply of antacids this year, so lets all get it right the first time, and in early to avoid that last minute rush. As always, please let me know if your chapter is encountering any problems getting it done. I'll offer any help I can to make this as smooth as a gravy sandwich!!

I'm very happy to report that my pleadings to free up the April event schedule has resulted in some changes for next year. Both Wings and Wheels and Long Island have moved to different dates to accommodate the scheduling bottleneck. My extreme thanks to both these chapters for stepping up, and working for the betterment of the Region!! I'm expecting one or two new approvals to come my way within the next few days, so my next update will contain the upcoming event dates. If your chapter hasn't gotten approval for either this years date, or next years, let me know what you plan to do so I can pencil you into the book. I'll hold off putting any entry in pen until you've confirmed the date, and approval has been granted.

Back to IPMS national news. The latest thing of note is the formation of the new Region 13. This group holds all the off shore, electronic and SIG chapters in a unique region. In our little world of Region 1, it means that Toronto is no longer an official member. I'm sorry to lose these guys, but know that the newly appointed RC-13, Glen Broman will do fine job for these chapters. These groups all have issues that are different than any home soil chapters, and I think it makes sense to have an RC that is dedicated to working with them, and helping them stay on track. Welcome Glen to the madness of the RC's!!!!!

On a similar note, our good friend Tim Hortman is standing down as RC-2. It seems real life is getting in the way of Tim continuing as an RC. He isn't leaving the hobby, and I know we'll still see him at Region 1 events as we have in the past. Personally, I'll miss Tim as an RC. He and I have been friends for longer than either of us have been an RC. Tim has graciously offered to stay on until his replacement can be named. No word yet on who that may be, but whoever it is has some large shoes to fill. Good luck in the future Tim, but maybe now you can spend more time at the bench!!!!!

I went to Montreal last weekend with IPMS President Jack Kennedy to see the Formula 1 race. What an awesome event!! I'd never been to an F-1 race before, and now I know what all the fuss is about. These guys put on a fantastic race. Montreal is a very cool city and the drive wasn't all that bad. It rained all the way home, sometimes to biblical proportion, but it was a very uneventful drive. I'd love to get to another one of these races sometime in the future. Also while we're talking about racing, the American Le Mans Series will be invading Lime Rock over the July 4th weekend. Not sure if I can make it yet, as our City fireworks are scheduled for that Monday. How does that effect any racing plans you may ask? Well, I work for the City of Stamford, and make mad OT during events like fireworks. Given a choice, I think I'll make the cash!! Sorry race fans, real life gets in the way again!!!

That brings us to the checkered flag. I'll take a cool down lap now, and close this by saying please, share this with the officers and members of your chapter. Until next time.........

2006 IPMS Region 2 Convention

Fellow Modelers,

IPMS Tidewater is excited to host this year’s Region 2 convention on October 20th and 21st, which is just 4 months away. TidewaterCON 2006 will be a memorable modeling event in the same location of the 1996 and 2002 IPMS Nationals. The venue this time will be the newly built, spacious Virginia Beach Convention Center which replaced the Virginia Beach Pavilion is gone; the new facility is far nicer and a great venue for a convention. The theme is “A History of Innovation” as we commemorate the pioneering events that occurred in this region – The Monitor vs Virginia, the Great White Fleet, The Wright Brothers, James Ely’s first naval flight and of course the engineers of NACA/NASA.

TidewaterCON 2006 will be more than a local show. Starting at 3:00pm on Friday, there will be two days of activities to keep you busy. The focus of the convention naturally is the model competition and the vendors, but we are planning seminars, display tables, static displays and family activities to make it even more enjoyable. We have a cash bar social hour planned for Saturday just before the awards ceremony. We have over 90 tables set aside for vendors and already have commitments from nine vendors. If you have a favorite vendor, please encourage them to sign up soon, before the best tables are gone and to take advantage of our discount price until July 15th. As for convention registration, it is never too early to sign up. As an extra incentive to attend we are offering an IPMS discount on the registration good up to an including the days of the event and an early bird discount before September 15th.

We have reserved rooms in the nearby Double Tree hotel and very attractive rates so that you can make it a relaxing fun filled weekend; rooms are only $75 a night for either a king or two full beds. Please checkout our website http://www.ipmstidewater.org/2con_home.htm , which is linked to the IPMS-USA website, for the latest and complete information. The hotel is only a mile from the oceanfront and the amenities of the resort area; so plan on making the convention a relaxing get away weekend. Plus there are a lot of activities nearby including the USS Wisconsin, the new USS Monitor exhibit, Fort Monroe, the Army Transportation museum, Langley AFB and NAS Oceana.

For this event we have developed a very attractive trophy for the contest patterned after the challenge coins used by the armed services. These medallions are beautifully enameled with gold, silver, bronze or pewter (for out-of-the-box) borders and come in an attractive rosewood display and can be seen on our website. This basic awards package is only $35 making it affordable for both smaller clubs and even individuals. This same medallion is used in the “best of” trophies and special awards. While the costs of these packages are higher, they are still reasonable. Please consider sponsoring one or more categories – we look forward to your support.

As more events/activities/information firms up we will be posting it on our website – so please check back often. The Region 2 convention has always drawn modelers from around the East Coast and points west and is one reason that it has always been so much fun. This convention will be a great opportunity to catch up with old friends/acquaintances, share the hobby, and share our history. We hope to see your club there in force.

Best regards,

Charles Landrum

Chairman, Region 2 Convention

President, IPMS Tidewater

A note from Hugh

Bobby,

Here's Major Samouce's lastest update.

I sent a small package of mostly supplies and some small models since the last meeting. I have a big box almost ready to go which I will top off with 1/72 WWII a/c (see the Major's request in his update). Note the change in emphasis from car models. I won't be at the JUNE meeting, but Frank C. will have the donations box. I'll update the totals after this next big box ships.

I'm going to include in the next box to Speicher a selection of photos of models taken at our March and May meetings.

Hugh

PS: My mistake. The small box mentioned below went out just before the last meeting rather than after. Also, the Major mentioned that acrylic paint is in short supply.

Hello all,

I hope this finds you well. Here is the June update to the Speicher Model Group. First and foremost, thanks for the continued support of the group. We have moved to another area in the MWR building and had KBR build some shelf to hold the kits.

We have also had a lot more soldiers taking part in the Group. Everyone is just amazed at the selection and supplies that you guys have provided. I do have a request to pass on from some of the soldiers. They would like more 1/72 scale WWII era aircraft kits. They have proved very popular and we only have a few remaining. We are also running low on acrylic paint.

On Memorial Day, we had a model display show in the MWR Library. I set the display up at 0700 in the morning and at 1800 when I arrived to remove all of the kits, there was quite a crowd still looking at them. I of course brought the soldiers back to the Group area and showed then the kits they could build.

Here some other models that have been completed –

I had one soldier who’s husband is located at another smaller FOB send him several kits with construction supplies. So it looks like we are doing “care” packages too.

I would like to thank the following organizations and individuals who have donated to the group.

Groups – Micro MARK Co, Fine Scale Modeler Magazine, The Polish Coastwatchers.

Individuals – Shawn Doughtie, Richard Redmond, R. Ekstrom, H. Lapa, Andy Kwong
So it June now, August will be here before I know it and we will all be returning to our families. The days drag buy but the months seem to move fast.

Thanks again and you all take care,

MAJ Duke Samouce

Noreastcon Review: 5/24/2006

Greetings and Salutations,

For those that didn't make it to Marlboro this past weekend, y'all missed a great Noreastcon. Our hosts, IPMS Bay Colony, Granite State, Patriot, and Wings and Wheels chapters did an awesome job putting together a fine event. Thank You!!

These folks went outside the box in providing entertainment for us, even before we arrived at the site. A methane tanker tipped over, and closed the Mass. Pike in both directions for over ten hours!! The traffic was horrendous in both directions, and nearly everyone I spoke to arrived tired, thirsty, hungry, thirsty, cranky, and did I mention thirsty? Actually, it was way out of their control, and while most everyone arrived later than originally planned there was a great event waiting when we finally got there.

A few of the numbers read as follows: over 500 models on the tables, and about 112 registered competitors, 9 of which were juniors. The quality of the models was very high, which meant the judges had very hard decisions to make. Best in Show went to a beautiful 1937 Seagrave Aerial Ladder Fire Truck that was scratch built by Charley Rowley. This had to been seen to be believed, it was absolutely outstanding!! Charley wrote a nice article detailing how he built the model, and it will submitted to the Journal for future publication.

There were about 60 vendor tables filled with all sorts of goodies, and I found some cool stuff to add to my pile. The facility was a little small, at least that's what a few guys have said, but I'd prefer the term cozy. The model room held all the models quite nicely, and the vendors managed to get all their wares in, so it worked!!!

On to the business. The Region 1 Business Meeting was well attended, and I'd like to thank those who gave their time to attend and give their thoughts on what we discussed. I mentioned that on the IPMS front the new Journal Editorial team is seeking authors for future articles. If any one is interested is doing some writing, please don't hesitate to put pen to paper, as it were. It would be great to see some Region 1 folks write for our publication.

Also, I stressed the importance of getting RC approval for your event, and the need to get the form on the IPMS web site filled out and sent in. Dick Montgomery, our DLC is working on a streamlined system that will be unveiled in the near future that will greatly improve the way event notification is handled. I'll let everyone know when it's on line. In the mean time, keep doing what you've been doing. On a similar subject, if your event needs a Certificate of Insurance for the facility, please request one well in advance of he event. Don't wait until two days before to request it. It won't happen.

A month or so before Noreastcon I was notified about the passing of Ron Lowery, Scratchbuilder par excellance. Ron was a member of IPMS Toronto, and had attended Noreastcon for quite a few years, practically owning the scratchbuilt aircraft category. It was proposed to come up with a suitable memorial for Ron by perhaps naming the scratchbuilt aircraft category in his memory. During the discussion that followed, it was brought up that a number of our friends, comrades and fellow modelers had passed away during the last year, and while Ron was an honored member of our region, it wouldn't be right to honor him alone while doing nothing in regard to our other friends. Also, if the trend continues to memorialize every friend that passed away, we'd soon run out of categories to honor them with. The assembled body discussed this at length, and it was decided that beginning with this Noreastcon, and at all future events, a roll of departed members would be read at the banquet honoring those that have gone before us. Before the meeting was adjourned I was given a list of six names of our missing friends. During my remarks at the banquet I explained what we discussed, and read the six names. When I was done, I looked up from my notes, and the entire room was standing. I believe this new tradition is one that is a suitable memorial for those we've lost in the year past, and will have more suitable words prepared for next year. The members honored are:

IPMS Toronto- Ron Lowery,
IPMS Southern Maine- Cliff Hanes,
IPMS Niagara Frontier- John Bishop,
Lee Repolas,
Bob Railhel,
IPMS Stratford- Jim Hyslop

We also talked a little about freeing up some of the April events. As I've spoken to in the past, we have far too many events in the month of April. I'd like to see one or two move from that month to give our region a better balance in our schedule. Location and timing being what they are I think it's important to every chapter to have an event that isn't in conflict with an event in close proximity to another. When that happens, every chapter is hurt in attendance by both attendees, and vendors. Well I'm quite happy to announce here that our friends over at IPMS Long Island are moving their show, RepLIcon to 31 March 2007. (More info on this event will be posted later)

Region 1 Chapter of the Year for 2005 was awarded to IPMS Wings and Wheels, a very deserving chapter. And 2005 Region 1 Person of the Year award went to a very surprised Ron Garland of IPMS Southern Maine. Congratulations Wings and Wheels and Ronny G!! I'll say here the Mainiacs really did an excellent job of keeping Ron in the dark regarding the award. My thanks to Gordon Smith for nominating one of the good guys here in Region 1.
The 2007 edition of Noreastcon will be held in Fishkill NY, (Where's Fishkill?) and our hosts will be IPMS Mid Hudson, and IPMS Stratford. Again, more information regarding next years event will be forthcoming.

Also presented at the banquet was the ever popular Noreastcon Cup. This is awarded to the chapter who's members win the most awards in competition at Noreastcon. However I've been informed there was a miscalculation in the results this year, and IPMS Bay Colony was awarded the cup erroneously. I've been told that the correct winner this year is actually IPMS Patriot. Negotiations are under way to ensure the cup is presented to the rightful winners. I've been told it will be cleaned before the hand over!!! Congratulations IPMS Patriot!! I guess the Bay Colony folks will be gunning for a win next year to make up for having to give the cup up. This should be interesting!!!

I was very honored to receive a copy of the History of IPMS Bay Colony. It a very good read, and is quite interesting. I'll also urge all chapters to write down your histories for future posterity. Thank you John Gisetto, and your lovely wife Bette for writing a fine document!! It will occupy an honored place in my library.

I guess everyone is getting eye strain from all this reading, so I'll end the review by thanking Chairman John Nickerson, and his entire team that put together a great event for us this year. I'll also single out John Gisetto, Ray Rosario, Al LeFleche, Devon Terpenning, and Pip Moss for their hard work at the show and during preparation. Without their efforts this years Noreastcon would have just been another show. Well done Gentlemen!!!

Until next time, that is, if there is a next time......

Please share this with the officers and members of your chapter.

NOTE: A Change in Schedule

REMINDER!!!

JUNE MEETING WILL BE:

*GRAY MODEL NIGHT &

*PARTS BOX NIGHT

JULY MEETING WILL BE:

*Worn, Weathered, & Working Theme

& PIZZA NIGHT

Thursday, May 18, 2006

Bulletin: May 2006

The Minutes!!!

April was another fine meeting for 2006. 28 members brought in 12 models and 16 works in progress to a very busy meeting.

APRIL MEETING!!!

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT: Members brought in various works from their workbenches to share with the group. In this hobby, if you don’t have several things in various stages, then you’re not doing it right! So we were pleased to see so many models on the tables and the discussions about them.

PIZZA OR BBQ NIGHT? Well, we settled it. June shall remain Pizza Night, and we’ll be finding out for the May meeting whether or now burgers and hot dogs are possible for the August meeting. We’ll see how it goes.

MOSQUITOCON: We had a lively discussion about the show in NJ. I know I don’t usually mention the shows here, but there were some interesting details. A large number of members went and got together for lunch out there. Kinda sounded like the old days. And we even had some WINNERS at the show. I know Hugh won a couple (of course my notes are at home while I’m writing this in the office!) and Don wan too. Congrats guys!

MOVING ON UP! We noted how former BPMS member JACK KENNEDY is now the President of IPMS. It’s always great to hear about old members doing well. Congrats Jack!

On the agenda: MAY

CONTEST NIGHT This will be the second installment of the BPMS annual contest. This is the regular quarterly contest with the standard six categories that members vote on. Bring in your best work and be sure to have the proper paperwork filled out, otherwise it can’t get votes!

PAINT STRIPPING CLINIC: We’re back to our basic skills clinics, as we haven’t had one of these in a while. We have discussed how to build and all those stages, but what do you do when things go wrong? Kits are too expensive to smash these days. You will need to strip off your paint and Gordon, Russ, and I will have some pearls of wisdom to share with you on the matter.

REMINDER: Coming in June!!!

Worn, Weathered, & Working Theme: Hugh, Frank C. and Frank T. offered to sponsor a theme contest that commemorates the works of the late Captain Bart, items that show the rigors and abuses of regular (and not so regular) service. This can easily be applied to all aspects of modeling.

Totals for Support of FOB Speicher Model Group

1. I’d like to make up a “thank you” for our members to sign in recognition of Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day and send it to the model group at Speicher. Do either of you have a softcopy file of the BPMS logo/patch?

2. Regarding the totals below:

(a) I have more kits that the members have donated, but I like to check the parts against the instructions when there are loose parts and that takes time.

(b) Also, I can’t locate the customs form from the first shipment I sent and I know Frank sent a package on his own, so these are “at least” totals for the club. Pretty nice showing for two months.

3. This data is from an Excel spreadsheet, but the pie graph I generated from it probably wouldn’t reproduce well for the bulletin. I’ll provide a report at the meeting on Friday night. I have framed the certificate of appreciation from Speicher that Frank received and I will put that out on the table on Friday. I have collected all the e-mail correspondence and web news articles and will put that out on the table in a notebook, as well.

4. Items Provided to Model Group Speicher by the Brooklyn Plastic Modelers Society as of 16 May 2006.

Item & Total To Date
  • Model Kits: 33
  • Brushes: 10
  • Decal Sheets: 8
  • Glue (Containers): 22
  • Knives: 3
  • Magazines: 11
  • Paint (Bottles): 23
  • Putty: 1
  • Sandpaper/Sticks: 6
  • Tweezers: 13
Total Items: 130

Kits
  • Aircraft/Helos: 18
  • Armor: 3
  • Cars/Motorcyles: 7
  • Figures: 3
  • Ships: 2
  • Miscellaneous: 0

5. My daughter Sarah said that folks see her name tag and ask if her Dad’s a member of the BPMS that’s sending kits to the model group. When she answers in the affirmative, they tell her which of the kits we’ve sent that they’re building. Good to know our efforts are appreciated.

See you Friday,

Hugh

Final Noreastcon Update: 05/13/2006

From RC1:
Well boys and girls, in less than one week we'll all begin gathering for our premier Region 1 event, Noreastcon. I'm really looking forward to this years event, as I know our hosts have been working their collective butts into the dirt to make this one of the best ever.

This is the last time I'll mention sponsoring for the show, as this is the final update you'll see before the show. I hope every region 1 chapter saw fit to sponsor a category. As most of us run our own shows, and we know how critical it is to have help. It's not too late to sponsor something, and I'm sure someone can be found to take your money at the show.

Attached is a list I received from John Gisetto containing the items to be auctioned off. There are some very nice offerings to be had, and all proceeds will go to the Hobby's for Heroes program. For those that don't know, Hobby's for Heroes is the program set up to send models, supplies, and support to our troops in Iran and Afghanistan. Lets see the bidding get hot and heavy to support these folks.

The show begins this Friday, and will feature some very cool programs that evening. Saturday will see a continuation of the festivities, along with the Region 1 Business Meeting. Please make sure your chapter has someone as a representative present. I have a small but important agenda planned and will open the floor for comments, questions and what have you.

The Judges Meeting will also afford everyone an opportunity to get on the Region 1 Judges list. I admit I have to start from scratch as I lost all the data when my old computer decided to have kittens.

Until then, I hope everyone has a safe trip to Noreastcon, and see y'all next weekend for some fun!!

News from the top

Hi everyone,
Attached is a message from our President, Jack Kennedy. It contains all the latest news from the home office.
Please share it with the officers and members of your chapter.
Doug Hamilton
Region 1 Coordinator
IPMS/USA

In keeping with a policy set by Dave Morrissette, the previous President of IPMS/USA, I am issuing a status report on happenings from the e-board.

President:

I have been in contact with Tony Ivone about how to present the Adult Plastic Model Building Course to the chapters. Tony was the originator of this project and I believe it has merit to the membership.

I am also proposing appointing Dick Montgomery to be our Membership Secretary to tie in to the job that he has been doing as DLC. Both Dick and Bob Hester are working out a new membership and Chapter database and I feel that the logical solution would be to combine the two positions.

I have been in contact with our legal counsel and he came up with a disclaimer that will free IPMS/USA of liability in the event of lost, stolen or damaged models at any IPMS event.

1st VP:

John has made arrangements to have IPMS/USA co-host the social that has been previously hosted by Two Bobs at the National Convention.

2nd VP:

IPMS/USA has received in excess of $8,700. as our share of the profits from the Atlanta Nationals held last summer. Ron also reports that all of the awards have been sent out in addition to the judges pins.

Our legal counsel is looking into re-wording the parameters for hosting a National Convention to make it easier to understand and make them more complete.

As far as the National Convention in Kansas City, 106 folks have pre-registered and 1802 room nights have been sold and KC is looking into overflow hotels. 255 Vendors have booked (Sold out) with 55 on the waiting list. The new registration system looks good as does the awards ceremony.

Lastly from the 2nd VP is that two chapters have shown interest in hosting the 2008 Nationals and hopefully they will bid in KC.

Director of Local Chapters:

Dick has been working closely with Bob Hester in formulating a database management system for the DLC database regarding chapters and membership. This is now 80% in place. More on this as it happens but it sounds terrific.

Dick has also proposed with the blessing of the regional coordinators putting the chapters outside the continental US into a satellite region to be administered by our Foreign Liaison officer. This sounds logical to me.

From Glen Broman, our Foreign Liaison Officer is news of our newest SIG: The Scale Firehouse-an international group that focuses on the building of emergency vehicles models and sharing techniques for the scratch building involved. Please contact Chris Mobley, 200 Fleet drive, Dahlongega, GA 30533. Phone (706)867-8176. http://scalefirehouse.com/. For more information on SIGs, check our listing in the Journal or on the IPMSUSA web page at www.ipomsusa.org.

Publications Director and Historian:

Jim Woody has informed me that the new Journal is almost finished and that it looks terrific. The editors will be inserting the amendments into the new Journal to be voted upon. I would like to remind the membership to vote and return the voting cars as we need 15% in order for any amendment to pass or fail. Without the 15% the amendment dies on the vine.

That is about all that I have for now. More will follow as I get news.

The E-board is having a meeting on Sunday May 14th and additional news should follow shortly after it.

Yours in modeling,

Jack Kennedy

Noreastcon Update

Hi everyone,

This just in from John Nickerson regarding this years event.

By the time we all show up, the hotels name will have been changed to the The Hotel - Marlborough. The same staff and amenities, just a new name. Also regarding the hotel, the hotel discount rate for rooms ends on April 28. There are plenty of rooms still available. Call the Radisson, Marlborough, MA directly at 508-480-0015 ext. 178 or 136. Ask for the Noreastcon discount

John also tells me that there are a number of trophy sponsorships left open. I guess y'all like to hear me beg and plead!! Please consider sponsoring at the premier event in our region. These folks are working hard to make a great event for us. Lets help them by sponsoring. The cost is very reasonable at $35.00 I can't stress enough how important it is to help.

One final thing John passed along relates to the banquet. Tickets for the meal have to be purchased in advance and no tickets will be available at the show prior to the meal. The menu features an "Italian Buffet" and promises to be very good. If anyone is planning to attend, and doesn't have their tickets yet, don't delay in getting them.

I'd also like to mention that each chapter should plan to have a representative at the Region 1 Business Meeting to be held Saturday morning. Check the time at the event for location. We'll be discussing a number of things that every chapter will want information on, and input into any decisions that are made. This is your chance to speak up and be heard. Plus, it's a chance to break my stones in person, who wouldn't want a crack at that!!!! I break stones back, so be forewarned!!! :-))

Not much on the National scene to report at this time. The next issue of the Journal will be hitting mailbox's soon. I hear our collective sox will be knocked off by the changes we'll be seeing, so keep your eyes peeled!!
With that, I'll close by asking to share this with the officers and members of your chapter. Until the next begging and pleading session, that is all!!

IPMS FYI Re: WWI Aircraft Colors

Forwarded by Frank:
Dear Frank
I am writing your club because I believe I have news/information which would at least be of some interest if not very helpful for your members who build WWI Aircraft subjects.
Here in the United States we have never had available a Line of Hobby Paints specifically matched to WWI Aircraft Colors. Modelers here have always had to compromise and guess at matches with whatever colors have been available at the Local Hobby Store from Hobby Paints made in Japan and England by Major Manufacturers.
One of the revolutionary aspects of our hobby which have led in part to it's current renaissance has been the flourishing of After Market Part makers which have complimented the products produced by bigger companies.
As an avid Modeller myself I have discovered an Italian After Market Company by the Name of MisterKit which since 1987 has had an exclusive line of Acrylic Hobby Paint Colors specifically matched to WWI airplanes. There are 66 colors in total of which there are up to eight various shades of Clear Doped Linen alone, according to Country of the combatant and in some cases even branch of service, i.e., Navy. All the colors were exhaustively researched and wherever possible actual surviving fabric samples were examined throughout Europe.
The Paints have enjoyed some popularity overseas and much respect. They have never been retailed nor advertised here in the US in large part because the very high cost of importing such a specialized product from a small foreign company has been cost prohibitive for retail operations.
I believe we shouldn't be limited to the quality of products available to us due to market pressures alone and have taken it upon myself to buy and import these colors myself for direct mail order distribution. I am basically a private Modeller without the resources to afford major market advertising hence these colors remain a well kept secret among experienced WWI Aircraft Modelers.
I write you in the hopes that you will disseminate to your members the information that there is now the existence of a US Distributor for these colors and they are readily available for their WWI Modeling needs.
Sincerely Yours,
Michael Taylor

Theme Reminder: WORN, WEATHERED, & WORKING

Worn, Weathered, & Working Theme

Hugh, Frank C. and Frank T. offered to sponsor a theme contest that commemorates the works of the late Captain Bart Holmes: items that show the rigors and abuses of regular (and not so regular) service. This can easily be applied to all aspects of modeling. Any questions can be directed to the sponsors during the meetings.

Bulletin: April 2006

THE MINUTES
by Bobby the Blue

March was another fine meeting for 2006. We had a full house. 31 members and one guest brought in 23 models to a meeting that was a celebration of our diverse society and sorrow for losing a founding member…

MARCH MEETING!!!

BPMS FOUNDER BERT BERG PASSES AWAY On the same day as the March meeting, the 17th, we were informed of Bert Berg’s passing. The viewing was on Sunday the 19th.

I don’t think I’d be understating matters if I said that without Bert Berg there might not have been a Brooklyn Plastic Modelers Society. The club originally met in his home back in 1971, then his shop when it picked up. By the time I started coming to meetings, the BPMS was meeting at Al Marciano’s Photo Studio. At that point Bert was still very much active in club matters. But times change. People move, and the club moved a couple times. The last time many of us saw Bert was at the 30th Anniversary Dinner. And he was filled with wondrous memories of members and events in the history of the BPMS. He recalled the early days; our involvement in IPMS affairs; our involvement in bringing the Intrepid to New York City, effectively saving it from being recycled into “razor blades” as he put it that day.

Bert may be gone, but can never be forgotten. He was instrumental in creating a club with a bond that holds together even 35 years later. The BPMS has seen clubs come and go. We remain. And we owe Bert a debt of gratitude for his labors in the early tears. Thank you, sir!

DECAL AND MODEL SWAP NIGHTS: People brought in goodies to sell and barter.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY: GREEN MODEL NIGHT!
For a LAST MINUTE activity I asked everyone to bring in their favorite FINISHED GREEN MODEL(S) to the meeting and they did! We had quite a lovely display of it at that! In fact, it turned out so well, that Frank C. suggested to me that we should keep the concept of meetings with a theme, but not for prizes, open for the future.

PIZZA OR BBQ NIGHT? Every year we’ve had the discussion about changing over from the traditional annual Pizza Night over to a Bar-Be-Que night. The BBSC has the facilities to make it so. Will we break the pizza tradition? Well, some years back we DID break tradition and moved Pizza Night from the August meeting to June, so firing up a grille is certainly not out of the question.

On the agenda: APRIL

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT: Bring those models that you’ve been laboring on. It doesn’t matter at what stage it’s at, just bring it in to show what you’re up to and be prepared to tell us a couple words about how you’re doing it!

From the club email box today

Hello,

I found your email address on your IPMS chapter website.

I am a member of IPMS Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. I keep a retail hobby website for Plusmodel® (brand) and GSModels® (brand) model kits, conversion kits, dioramas and accessories.

Plusmodel® products has been around since 1990. The kits are sold worldwide and have earned an excellent reputation for crisp detail and the professional kit quality we Americans expect. GSModels® is brand new on the market this month and I am currently the only retailer of GSModels® worldwide. These models are truly different.

To get the word out about my webstore and to promote membership in the IPMS I am making an introductory offer...

All of your club members will get 20% off on their first order. To get the discount they should send a Photostat of their IPMS membership card or Photostat of your club's current IPMS chapter charter with the order.

Would you please inform your IPMS chapter membership that I am giving your chapter members a 20% discount on everything shown on my www.hobbymodel.us
website? To keep the shipping cost as cheap as possible I suggest that your members send in a group order. Of course, if the guys in your chapter are like mine, getting them to do anything at once or on time is a stretch :-)

Here is a message from Jim W.
please let everyone know that the new Journal staff is looking for 'experts' in the different fields of modeling. If they know someone that is the go to guy or gal on a certain subject, then please have that person contact Chris Bucholtz at editor@ipmsusa.org so that he can add that persons information to our panel of 'experts'. These people will be used during the year to give our society a view of their area of expertise. We are also looking for modelers that would like to join the staff to help with articles, etc. The Journal staff will work with you to produce a better result for the Journal, so don't be shy step right up...

Region 1 Update: Fri, 14 Apr 2006

Hi everyone,

I have news to pass along about the Journal and some of the new things we can look for in upcoming issues. I received an e mail today from Chris Bucholtz, my counterpart in Region 9, and a member of the new editorial team. From what he's telling me, we're going to see some fantastic articles, and the May/June issue should be in our hands shortly. The second issue from the new team also seems to be on track to astound and amaze. The popular "Chapter Happenings" section is slated to return in some form. The editorial team is scouting for writers to contribute articles on a variety of subjects. If you have an area you'd like to write about, consider submitting something for publication. You won't get paid for it, but we'll get to see your name in print!!

Also, I'd like to remind all our chapters that each of you are entitled to a quarter page ad for your event in the Journal. Noreastcon also is covered. The ad must be camera ready, not just a copy of your flier. Also be advised to submit this well in advance of your event. It takes a while to get any magazine ready for publication, so keep this in mind when preparing your artwork. Journal deadlines are in each issue, so please plan accordingly.

Noreastcon is rapidly approaching, so it would be advisable to make you reservations soon, if you haven't done it yet. John and his gang are hard at work getting everything set, and we'll see another memorable event this year. And seeing how I didn't mention trophy sponsorships yet, I'll do so now and ask all to consider sponsorship. I'll be announcing where Noreastcon will take us next year, and the winners of the Region 1 Chapter of the Year, and Person of the Year at the banquet.

I'll end this by wishing everyone out there a Happy Easter, this week or next, and a Happy Passover.

Region 1 Update: 03/26/06

Hi everyone,

I'm now back from a 16 day jaunt out west. The wife and I had a great time, but will tell you the weather wasn't what I was expecting out there. It was cold, cool, rainy, snowy, cool, and generally crappy. It finally warmed up the last three days of the trip. That's about right!!!

We went to the Vegas Cup race two weeks ago, and let me tell you, it was the coldest I've ever been at the race track. Cold winds blowing at about 30 knots, cloudy, and so cold you couldn't sit there and watch the racing. The best part was on Friday. The Thunderbirds, who are based across the street at Nellis AFB were practicing their show for the better part of the day. It was spectacular to see them do their thing wile watching the cars on the track. As cold as it was, it was worth freezing to see it all. They did the fly-over on Sunday, and made five passes in various formations before the race started. Very cool (Pun, what pun?) indeed!!!

When we got home, I had a HUGE bag of mail waiting for my attention. One of the more interesting items I received was the Noreastcon event information. As I've said before, John and the whole Noreastcon team is putting together a fine event for us this year. Get your registration back to Event Registrar Bob Magina soon, and avoid the rush!! And of course, they're still looking for sponsorships!! Please consider sponsoring a category at our Regions premier event.

The latest issue of the IPMS Journal has been mailed, so everyone should be receiving theirs shortly. I haven't gotten mine yet, but from what I've been hearing, outgoing Editor David Von Almen has used it as a platform to trash everyone he associates with his ouster. It's too bad he decided to take the low road out of town. He's done a fine job over the years in keeping our publication on track and on time, and taking such a low tack in his final edition will not enhance his legacy. I know there have been quite a few complaints on the quality of his editorship over the years, but to use the official publication of the Society as a personal bitch stump on the way out the door just isn't right. I have to reserve judgement until I actually see it, but if what I'm hearing is true, it will certainly lower my opinion of the man.

Also, after a long wait, the Judges Pins from Atlanta have been mailed. Hurrah!!! I receive mine while I was away. If you judged in 'Lanta, and signed the book, you should have gotten yours by now as well. If you don't get yours within a week or so, contact the Atlanta crew. They're very nice, and look similar to the event pins.

There isn't much else to report at this time. I'm back, and ready to get back into the saddle after a fine vacation. The time shift will be something to deal with, but after a few days, I should be alright. I'll have more to pass along as I get back up to speed. Please share this with the officer and members of your chapter.
